Final work - MALE FEMALE WORM
For this project I wanted to further explore the gender binary and how it has affected me and in the shaping of my identity. I first started researching game shows because I find their hyper-happy persona that the host and participants have really interesting because of its uncanny nature. I thought about doing a game show/spelling bee video where participants had to try and use gender neutral pronouns but would have a kind of breakdown because they couldn't comprehend the fact that some people don't fit in the gender binary- I didn't end up using this idea mostly because I don’t have the editing skills to make it the way I have envisioned.
 Although my poster from my last assessment was quite vague and ephemeral the video I have created is more direct in that in conveys specific memories. The idea stemmed from when I explained to my parents that I was non-binary and my mothers' first response was "What like a worm? They're sexless", I decided to play with the odd notion that me or my gender is 'like a worm' somewhat taking on the persona of a worm, I then recalled other things people have said to me regarding my gender identity often out of ignorance.
In impersonating the people whose comments, I was using I used face paint to get into character, I choose to layer the paint for each new character symbolising a build-up of the confusing and often painful comments themselves as well as myself building a layer of resistance emotionally in order to deal with the things people are no doubt going to say to me. In retrospect the face paint resembles camouflage; gender non-conforming identities are often ignored, pushed away or dismissed so the camouflage shows that who I am is not seen or accepted.Â
