Learning and surprising

From the past and present day, people can infer child trafficking will always be apart of our society. The need for stronger rules, regulations, and governments will affect the outcome of child trafficking. For some people, breaking the rules is second nature but, stronger governments will lessen the number of children involved with trafficking. Along with governments, the internet and technology allow for the increased levels of children being exploited. I was surprised to learn traffickers are using the internet to generate customers. If people can better handle what is posted to the internet, the more we can help trafficked victims.

I selected this content because of the title, “No Future.” I feel if we do not help these children, they have no future.

The Future

Currently we learned about the history of child trafficking and present day trafficking but, what does the future look like?

In September of 2017, a report done by the International Labor Organization and Walk Free Foundation found, “71% of trafficked victims around the world are women and girls and 29% are men and boys.” In the 2017 State Department Trafficking in Persons (TIP) reported in 2016 there were 14,894 prosecutions and 9,071 convictions for trafficking globally. From this report the most identified victims (18,296) were in Africa, the most prosecutions (6,297) were in South and Central Asia, and the most convictions (2,193) were in South and Central Asia. The future of child trafficking will depend on the structure and strength of the countries government. Africa’s government has less control over the citizens and fewer rules. Since the government is weak, traffickers can move more freely than a country with stronger regulations, like the United States. This is why Africa had the highest cases of child trafficking in 2016. If supporters want to end child trafficking, third world nations need to create stricter laws and regulations.

With the use of a computer and a webcam, child exploitation can be taken to the internet. A article was posted about the pedophiles in the United Kingdom who live-stream child pornography. This new form of trafficking is called, “cybersex trafficking.” I feel the internet allows traffickers to make a better profit along with keeping them safe from the police. The trafficker could easily move after the live-stream airs. Thus, making it harder for the police to locate the criminal and find the victims. From this, I can infer child trafficking cases will increase because  traffickers can hide behind their computer screen. The internet causes difficulties when the police are trying to identify the trafficker. The webcam only captures an imagine of a person or object in the view finder. During the live-stream a trafficker does not have to reveal his or her self. This can make it difficult when trying to identify a trafficker. With current technology, child trafficking cases will increase because the internet allows traffickers to work from the safety of their own home. 

Child trafficking cases will increase due to weak governments and advanced technology.

What surprised you?

Trying to find information and stories about present day child trafficking was difficult and surprising to me. Difficult because of the cases dealing with child trafficking and to see the statistics. To me, this topic is something I feel should not even exist but it does. At the beginning of my present day report, I opened with a case dealing with child trafficking. As I heard Eva’s story, I was surprised to find out after she escaped her trafficker, she could not escape the sexual work she was forced into. It never occurred to me these victims sometimes returned to sexually exposing themselves just to eat one night. Personally, I thought once they escaped their pimp or trafficker they could work and find a better job. For example, maybe as a fast food employee or gas station worker. Something better than being used for sexual purposes. The realization of how this is not the case for some people surprised me. Along with Eva’s story, it was surprising to me about how the United States is the second largest destination for human trafficking. I understand human trafficking is in the U.S but, I did not think it would be as large or as present in our society. I would have thought India, China, or more densely populated countries would have a higher rate of human trafficking. I assumed with the passing of the Emancipation Proclamation, it would have proven to all Americans how we are against any type of slavery. Thus, causing me to feel surprised about the level of modern slavery in our country because millions of people fought in the Civil War and in Congress to end slavery. Eva’s case and the level of human trafficking in the United States surprised me.

Present

July 28, 2018 a article was posted, titled, “Human Trafficking: 150 child slave victims identified.” This article told the story of a teenager named Eva, who was brought to Wales to work as a “nanny.” Eva was forced into prostitution and worked 24 hours a day for seven days a week. Once Eva fled from her suppressors, she found she could not escape the trade she was forced into. She had no claim to benefits and no place to go. 

Child trafficking is not a thing of the past. It is in our 21st century and we can stand against this green eyed beast. 

Sex trafficking is one type of trafficking, the other would be labor trafficking. The United States government states any minor, under 18, is involved in sex trafficking whether or not if force, fraud, or coercion was used by the trafficker. A website known as the PolarisProject states the statistics for human trafficking. Since 2007, there has been 34,700 cases of sex trafficking in the United States. Recently in 2017, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children say 1 in 7 runaways are reported of being used in sex trafficking. 

Any type of person can be involved with labor trafficking. This where the trafficker uses false promises and types of coercion to lead people into industries to work against their will. Since 2007, there has been 7,800 labor cases in the United States which have been reported to the National Human Trafficking Hotline. World wide, there have been an estimate of 20.1 million people involved with forced labor.

A organization called, “Not For Sale”, deals with people who have been involved in forced labor. In 2016, Not For Sale helped 1,997 families and community members who have been exposed to forced labor. These 1,997 families who were indirectly helped include children, mothers, and fathers who all benefited from this organizations kindness. Not For Sale also offers direct services to these individuals. This includes long-term housing, education, legal services, and other options to introduce these people back into a forced labor free life. 

“United Against Human Trafficking” is a organization who battles sexual and forces trafficking. This organization deals with young children, teenagers, women, and men who were used against their will. This organization helps these victims while also arming citizens with knowledge. On their website, they offer a free E-learning course. The course teaches people how to realize signs of trafficking and teaches people to report these signs. The UAHT provides victims with qualities to survive and offers information to helpful people. 

With all these organizations helping trafficked victims, how does child trafficking affect the average persons life? According a article posted in 2010, the United States is the second highest place for child trafficking. A study performed by the University of Pennsylvania, there is nearly 300,000 youth at risk of child trafficking. The average person would most likely not be involved with child trafficking, yet, the possibility is still there. A population count was performed on February 2019 estimates the population to be 328,195,789 people and counting. The current population suggest the average person will not be exposed to or involved in child trafficking. Despite this, many people are being trafficked in today’s society. 

One case of child trafficking is one too many and people are working to eliminate any form of trafficking.

Surprising History

During my research on the history of child trafficking, I was surprised at what I learned. The groups of people involved and past case surprised me during my research.  

For starters, it was surprising to me how many groups deal with child trafficking. The Good Weave, Urban Light, and many other groups offer children support and help those who have been trafficked. I was pleasantly surprised to realize how invested and helpful people have been in ending child trafficking. To me, it was important to see how people are taking a stand against child trafficking and someday I could potentially make a change too. It seemed confusing and surprising to me as to why more people do not hear about these organizations. I feel with doing research on these groups, more people will learn about them. These helpful organizations and past cases were surprising to me.

To describe the history, I knew I had to address what children and young adults experienced in the past. When I learned about the case dealing with a trafficking ring in the United States during 1999, I was surprised. I did not occur to me how a problem as horrendous as child trafficking could have happened in the United States of America. I believed this problem was a third world problem and it could not occur here because we were more “civilized.” Despite my belief, I was wrong to assume child trafficking could not reach the United States.

These findings helped me better understand child trafficking and made me more informed about this problem.

The Back Story

In order to end child trafficking, we need to understand where it came from and what has been done to stop it. 

Slavery has been present in every human civilization. From Greece in the 7th century B.C. to the 1800′s in America, slaves have been used. Men, women, and children have been sold and bought for labor and other purposes. Slaves have been used as Gladiators in the Roman Empire and in southern states of America during the Civil War. With the passing of the 13th Amendment, it was believed slavery was solved but, it led to human trafficking. By understanding how child trafficking originated, people can better understand the history of child trafficking.

To help end using children against their will, the United States made changes to and created certain legislation. During the 1880′s into the 1900′s, the legal age of consent for minors was raised to sixteen years old. Following this, the Man Act of 1910 was passed to protect women from being transported from state to states without their consent. The problem with this act was it did not specifically protect minors but, this would later lead to more powerful legislation to protect children. The Man Act was amended in 1986 to protect children from any sexual activity which could lead to a criminal offense. The United States again tried to end child trafficking by passing the Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Act which protected children in foreign nations. This piece of legislation stated it was illegal to travel to another nation to have sexual intercourse with a minor. The United States has made efforts to limit the number of children exposed to this problem, like several other countries have too.

Afghanistan, India, and Nepal have taken a stand against child trafficking. Afghanistan has passed the Afghanistan’s Penal Codes of 1976,  Afghanistan’s Labor Codes of 1999, and other major pieces of legislature. During 1990, India passed the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection) Act. Nepal passed the Children’s Act in 1992 and The Human Trafficking Control Act in 2007 to increase the safety of their children. Observers can see how these laws have attempted to protected children from the threats of trafficking and the hope to end child trafficking has been a consistent feeling.

Despite the government’s best efforts to end child trafficking, the people decided to take control. During 1944, a group called, “Good Weave,” started to help children who were being used as labors. These children worked in the homemade rug industry for up to 18 hours a day in South Asia. Good Weave was able to bring the amount of child labors down 75% and insure all rugs made in the United States were free from child labor. Along with Good Weave, the Urban Light offers assistance to young men who have been dragged into the sex industry. The founder saw how young men who were being trafficked not receive the same amount of attention as young women so, Alezandra Russell decided to help. This organization located in Thailand, began in 2009 to offer young men who were being used for sexual purposes. Urban Light offers these boys information, food, support, and supplies in hopes of them rising above the sex and labor industry.

Many children who have been used for trafficking have gone unrecorded so, it is unclear of how many children have been involved. Despite this, police officers have been successful in closing cases dealing with child trafficking. During August of 1999, the Atlanta, Georgia police were able to break a trafficking ring who transported more than 1000 women. These women were being brought into the United States from several Asian countries with the purpose of working in brothels across the country. Along with this discovery, the police were able to capture a man who pleaded guilty to holding five women against their will. This discovery within a four month span during 1999 was located in Chicago. These discoveries helped protect innocent people being used against their will.

The history of child trafficking is a dark and scary one. From the millions of slaves used in ancient times to recent times, child trafficking is persistent. By understanding the past, we can better help the future.

Welcome to my Tumblr! My name is Brooke and I am from good ol’e Pennsylvania.

My reason for creating this account is to address the history, present day, and future of trafficking children. Yes, this is a harsh topic and yes, this is a school project. This topic is a very serious to other people and to me personally. I feel if more people are informed about the dangers and are exposed to the reality of trafficking children, we can end this disgrace to humanity.

One summer, I went to a local college for a rotary camp. During my time at the camp, we did a activity called, “The Red Sand Project.” Each camper got a bag of red sand and poured it out to show support to the victims of human trafficking. This experience drove me to become more invested and informed about the safety of children.

Along with this experience, during school we have had people who have be exposed to the effects of  human trafficking come and address this epidemic to us students. During their seminar, I learned how close child trafficking is to us and how unprotected we really are. This opened my eyes to the possibility of how any one of my schoolmates, siblings, close friends, and maybe myself could be exposed to trafficking. By realizing the reality of this, it encouraged me to become more informed about child trafficking so one day I could potentially help people who deal with this situation. Along with helping anyone who may be at risk of potentially being trafficked.
