Final Work Statement
The intentional action of glitch. A glitch can be created through an intentional action that then omits differently with an unpredictable irregularity from the original. Ā This artwork is constructed with various materials that intertwine with the actions required to illustrate the aesthetics of glitch. Ā Using embroidery thread, unstretched canvas, a rock and a microchip, this series looks upon the different aspects of decisions making that goes through the process of performing an irregularity in a particular system whether digital or analogue. This particular āprocessā was further researched by looking closely at the social environments of the internet, in particular hackers and the practice of hacking, along with the interruptions of lost internet connections that are created purposely through poor internet transmission. Through many experiments of different materials and going back to digital techniques of glitch such as ādata bendingā, I decided to go further with embroidery and the materials that work with it. Further experiments were produced around embroidery which led myself to find that both digital data bending and sewing are quite similar in regards to these materials being temporary and easily manipulated to create a distorted image. Ā I found when I was sewing, the back of it was more 'distortedā then the front. I contemplated for a while whether to put this in my final work, but finally decided to leave the front of what I had embroidered as it is.
The image on the left are red, green and blue embroidery threads that are used to purposely create an aesthetic Ā glitch, portraying the image of distortion through the sewn zig-zaged lines. These particular colours are responsible for sensing, representation and display of images in electronic devices. I played with the aesthetic shape of a 'glitchā as Ā a rigid shape and how it can be interpretative in a digital image.
The image in the middle uses Ā found, leftover embroidery threads that have been ironed onto the unstretched canvas. The pile of unused embroidery threads reminded me of the colours depicted in computer cables and wires, and the physical glitch that is created over time through movement and low maintenance of these materials. By placing the threads on the unstretched canvas, it created a distorted image that is tangled, uneven, colour disorientated and vague.
The image on the right, I used the chrome page āUnable to connect to the internetā with the image of the dinosaur by appropriating techniques of drawing and sewing with black embroidery thread. The dinosaur image on the chrome page can be seen as āif you do not have internet, you are living in the stone age.ā Playing around with text by replacing the word 'connectā with 'needlework,ā I created the typography 'Unable to needlework to the Internet.ā Ā Drawing the font of the chrome page and the image of the dinosaur, I then embroidered it all. I was inspired to play with words using embroidery by artist Melissa Barron and her works with weaving and manipulated texts.
The small sculptural piece displayed underneath the embroidered works is of a microchip placed on a found, pale pink rock. I was originally trying to develop some sort of 'new technological glitchā with the microchip, experiment way to make the small device work. With experiments with materials around me, I stumbled upon rocks that Iāve collected over some time and found that objectively, both the microchip and the rock displayed interesting qualities when they are placed together. The rock subjectively displays older qualities of past histories, human alike, whilst the microchip presents new technological advancements in human histories. Thinking of ways to place the sculptural piece as part of the series, I found an extension chord and placed it up against the wall to create a stance. I put the extension chord as the stance to create a deeper context of what materials are placed in this series. The extension chord gives an impact of the relationship displayed in the sculpture, almost portraying an artefact that is found by the yellowish, brown colour of the chord.
Throughout this series I explored materials that are non digital and somewhat temporary, as seen through the embroidery and also the microchip, whilst researching ways that these particular materials can create a glitch aesthetically through actions and motions made by the human hand. There are natural glitches that occur around our environment, but digital glitches would not be as it is presented today without interrupted data and algorithms that play a part in technological devices. There is a common quote that states ācomputers do not make mistake, humans doā, which creates an interesting factor to who we are as human beings scientifically.Through the use of found objects, colours, shapes and texts presented in my artwork, it portrays the initial, deliberate action required to create a glitched image, or any particular object or device to stop performing its initial programmed requirements.

Experiment: Purposely creating a glitch aesthetic using embroidery. The first picture is the front and the second picture is of the back. I feel like more could be added but I don't know what yet. This could possibly be part of a series with the microchip and rock that I created earlier?
Experiment:
I felt like drawing something because I havenāt drawn in awhile in ADAD. I was looking at different hackers, particularly āAnonymousā, and how they purposely create glitches through hacking modes. Iāve illustrated that using graphite and black felt tip pen through the glitch lines of the Anonymous face by purposely creating these motions of a glitch. I feel like this is a bit uninteresting and doesnāt 'pop out of the paper.ā Maybe more tone is needed in the image?
Experiment: Continuing on with the microchip, I was looking at materials I had around my house, and I I had a lot of rocks and shells that I've collected over some time. I was mix and matching the shells and the rock that go well with the microchip. In the end I created this. I really like how it turned out but I definitely need to think about the context of the little object, where can it be placed? On what? I feel like this little sculpture could be part of a series somehow.
I was thinking of conspiracy theories, which led me to think of conspiracy theories around Ā ā9/11.ā² I feel conspiracy theories is kind of a social glitch which an individual breaks from the norm of something that was once trusted.Ā
I used data bending to glitch an image of the world trade centre using the wordpad. I took some text out out and replaced it with āBUSH DID 9/11ā².Ā
Sort of a cliche I know, but the image turned out pretty well with the text I put in. Ā Ā
Continuing on from my last experiment, I tried to work out more of the circuit I created by changing things around and researching more into microchips and circuits. In the end I was getting nowhere because I didnāt really know what I was doing. So I decided to go into a different direction in using the microchip. I guess this experiment is a glitch in itself.
Inspired by my research of the microscopic photos of microchips I decided to photograph and edit the two images above. I used a DSLR to photograph the microchip, and edited the images by making the saturation higher. I like how these turned out and I could maybe further this by photographing more old microchips?
When editing these images I noticed that the microchip is a bit damaged as seen in the second image.I also noticed that the wordsĀ āETā on the second photo, it Ā looks like the logo forĀ āEntertainment Tonight.ā

Here we wrapped a tree in alfoil during the fire drill to try andĀ āsaveā the tree. Little did we know, was that once the alfoil was removed the water that had covered the tree was still there. It was as if the alfoil preserved the water, again saving the tree.Ā

Practice led research Assessment 2
I started off assessment 2 by getting straight into experimenting with the āmicrochipā I had in my poster from assessment 1. I was playing around with ways to bring this microchip āaliveā somehow, and after realising that I had no idea what I was doing, I went to the good old google and search how microchips worked and how to make a circuit out of them. I didn't get much from my research but as I was researching I remembered I had some other electronic equipment (such as an LED light from when I was in high school).
I put a circuit together (to create light in the LED) along with the microchip but it came to a fail when the light didnāt come up and an awful aroma started to smoke out of it. That was a sign to stop it there.
I know this experiment doesnāt necessarily illustrate glitch aesthetically, but I thought that using the microchip from my last assessment and having the ability to make it work technically somehow wouldāve started something really interesting with the idea of transmission and disruption. I do love the aesthetic look of the microchip so I will definitely keep playing with that. Ā

We created aĀ āJenga Buildingā and changed the context by itās location. The Jenga blocks with items missing has itās own effect yet putting with the building in the background creates a whole new effect by almost making the toy look like the solid buildings.Ā This artwork was a reaction to Nam Jine Paikās artworkĀ āTV fishā, 2004
Contexts and Time:
This is a Jenga building we took apart and placed in a location to change the context. In this, the Jenga tower became almost disguised by the cityscape behind it, however, it could only be temporary depending on natural elements.Ā

Final work statement: My first initial response to this question was that I should not create the typical āglitchā aesthetic. But after researching how a glitch within a database actually works, it changed my mindset of the creative possibilities of glitch. By using approachās of third party āglitch appsā and data bending on āwordpadā, I created images and text that was completely distorted to semi distorted that still illustrated part of the initial image. Throughout my practice led research and final poster I wanted to illustrate the concept of human mistakes upon machines, disrupting the manufactured data of what machines are instructed to do. Glitches are created by the actions of humans disrupting machine algorithms and can be created on purpose by data bending and other irregularities that are physically hacked to create unpredictable irregularitys in a system. Using both digital and analogue glitch techniques as part of my practice, I created some digital glitches of images and texts first and decided how I could create these glitches in an analogue format. Drawing on black cardboard using soft pastels, acrylic paint and silver pen, I drew an image of an analogue, surreal glitch of an alien inside a girls head and distorted the image to create an even further glitch. The text that I glitched wrote āThis isnāt real.ā I then translated it to morse code as both the disruption of binary and morse code is part of the glitch process. I chose the text āThis isnāt realā as it challenges the structures of what is considered normal, as a glitch provides the destruction of these structures in both digital and analogue worlds. Lastly I used a microchip to creatively show the bases of where glitches can be created digitally. The poster I created can be seen as a body of a glitch, what can be visual seen, what creates the glitch through human manipulation and the starting point, the bases.
