Experimentation
I removed the text and added in a focal point in this experiment. I like the idea of having colour in the image but I think this is too stripped back and almost looks bare? It could work but definitely needs more work, I don’t think it grabs the eye as much as it should. You aren’t intrigued to continue looking at this image, you get everything you want from it in a few seconds.
Experimentation: My group has decided to make a number of word entries and then visualise them through digital manipulation of images and text. Taking an excerpt from my written piece I cropped a sentence “fluro really is a sin” and multiplied it. I then wrote the simple text and bolded certain sections. I took a screenshot of it so I could keep the red line indicating a misspelt word.
I like the chaos this image presents. I think it needs a visual element or a point of interest. I’m not entirely sure how I could incorporate this without crowding the image?
Experimentation
Using the inspiration from the ransom note aesthetic I downloaded a few online fonts. I mixed them together to emulate the style and create a heading for our publication. I like the way it looks but I feel like its too clean, if we’re going to go down this road it can’t be a half way job - the entire publication needs to be really grungey.
Visual representation from the nowness writings.
With our own writings, we each edited what we wrote in a representation of what we were feeling at that moment in relation to the text. I used photoshop as a form of editing, to create the text into something very confusing and repetitive.
These are some of the original nowness writings we collected and scanned, written by our group (Eve, Susannah, Sam and Ella) as well as an anonymous writer. Unfortunately for this zine publication, we could only choose 5 of the writings.
Artist Inspiration: April Greiman
April Greiman has been a pioneer in the use of digital graphic media. She works with a multitude of mediums and produces a wide range of works. Her works incorporate Swiss design training and west coast postmodernist style.
“Greiman has been instrumental in the acceptance and use of advanced technology in the arts and the design process since the early 1980s”.
Aesthetically I find the way Greiman sets out her images really interesting. Like Weingart she uses a flow throughout her image to direct the eyes across the page. This is dissimilar to other artists who often have a focal in their image. It would be interesting to have works in our publication that both emulated and juxtaposed this idea.
Artist Inspiration: Wolfgang Weingart Prominent German artist and typographer. Weingart was a very influential typographer, whose works are more commonly recognised for their deconstructed graphics. Weingart taught and influenced the movement of ‘new wave’ deconstructivism’ in graphic art.
I particularly like this graphic style, the chaos is somewhat calm. The eye is drawn to certain parts of the image - yet has the freedom to move around the piece without being overpowered by certain sections.
Artist Inspiration: Aaron Koblin - The Sheep Market
Take a moment to zoom in on this image and look closely. This is Aaron Koblin’s 10,000 sheep created by Amazon mechanical turks for his work The Sheep Market.
Our group found this extremely inspiring as he takes works that are not necessarily considered art and transforms them into a sought after work. We wanted to incorporate this idea into our publication as we feel this makes art more accessible to both the audience and the maker. We want to use this idea as the basis as our work - creating art for everyone. Someone that everyone can understand and essentially everyone can produce. We find the greatness in this work in the scale and format.
Originally our project was heading down a path similar to the sheep market project by Aaron Koblin. We asked people to draw their favourite spread as a part of our - art for everyone - idea. Although this fell through and the zine took a different direction.
