Ring in the New You
3 years ago, I decided that I didn't want to be confused about what to eat anymore.
So I attended nutrition school at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, and it completely opened up a new world for me. Some changes over the past 3 years: - Quit my soul-sucking corporate job that I hated, and started my own health coaching practice - Have a new community of friends who are passionate about health, living well, the environment, etc., including yogis, massage therapists, chefs, doctors, and just regular awesome people working in offices like I was - I cleared up health problems like anxiety, sugar addiction, coffee addiction, my skin cleared up (finally) and I lost some extra weight - I stopped wearing myself out by partying too much and 1.5 years ago I stopped drinking altogether - That freed up a lot of time and energy, and I ran 3 marathons since I went to nutrition school. Might run another this spring! - I got a puppy - I started practicing yoga and love it - I'm never confused about what to eat! Totally calm and confident when I'm at the supermarket, in a restaurant or at home. Feel the best I've ever felt. Turning 30 this year and not freaking out one tiny bit about it :) I mention all of this because my school is letting me offer two $500 tuition scholarships to friends and family who enroll by December 31. If you have questions, you can reach out to me, I'm happy to talk to you, or you can call the school at (877) 730-5444.
Pear Crumble
I got a recipe for Pear Crumble from health coach Andrea Beaman yesterday and thought - I have 2 pears getting overripe on the counter, I like crumble, let's do it. I didn't have half the ingredients though, so I freestyled it. Here's what I did: - preheat oven to 375 - diced 2 pears, put in casserole dish - combined coconut oil (instead of butter), flour, oats, raw honey, dash of allspice, dash of salt to make my crumbs. I just eyeballed the amounts to get the right consistency. - topped the pears with my crumbs. - baked for about 35-40 minutes. Delicious!
Meet Carrot's shy little sister, Parsnip
After 29 years of hardly eating a parsnip, I went crazy and bought a whole bag of them this week. Parsnip, you've been too modest and humble! Overshadowed by her outgoing sister, the brightly-colored carrot, you'd never know how much potassium and fiber she delivers with a subtle sweet flavor. Earlier this week I roasted them with squash, onion, tofu, salt, pepper and coconut oil. And today I sauteed some with soy sauce and ate with brown rice:
Wash parsnips and slice into ½-inch rounds.
Heat oil in a sauté pan and add parsnips.
Sauté for 5 minutes, stirring frequently.
Add a little water, cover and steam for 5 minutes.
Add soy sauce and sesame seeds, cook for a few more minutes until the parsnips are tender.
Enjoy!
coffee is the worst
I have a love/ hate thing going on with coffee. I love to drink it in the morning, and hate how it makes me jittery, anxious, is acid-forming, addictive and messes with my adrenals. Hmmpf. But after Thanksgiving weekend, I'm ready for some gentle detoxing, so here's what I'm having today: Just a few loose green tea leaves with TONS of hot water. The tea is pretty weak but has a nice flavor and all this hot water is amazing for flushing out my system. Truly feels much better than coffee. After I'll use the loose tea leaves, mixed with a little honey, as a mask on my skin.
happy thanksgiving!
I'm so grateful this year.. for family, a new niece and nephew, a wonderful new relationship, my puppy, friends, travel adventures, being able to do work I love that makes a difference, my health, and on and on.
I'm bringing Spinach-Cranberry-Walnut salad to Thanksgiving dinner. Remember that in every situation, you can choose foods that nourish you. You can be the one setting an example of healthy eating. And focus on gratitude, connection and conversation, rather than the food .. and of course save room for pumpkin pie!
break a sweat every day
I learned that tip from Lance Armstrong. Going to the gym for a quick run!
this is dragonfruit and rambutan from thailand. i ate TONS of dragonfruit, every day.. it's so pretty and we can't get it at home.
Papaya for clear skin! A few years ago, my acupuncturist taught me that papaya has enzymes that are great for your skin. It's not my favorite fruit in the world, but I eat it now and then to give my skin a boost. You can also cut up some papaya and rub it on your face as a mask. Just wait a few minutes for it to dry and then rinse it off. Easy shmeezy. Learn more skincare tips on the Get Glowing: 7 Days to Clear Skin program, starting Nov 30! http://brooklynraw.com/detox
Get Glowing: 7 Days to Clear Skin
I’m excited to announce the GET GLOWING: 7 DAYS TO CLEAR SKIN jumpstart program. A big thing that many of my health coaching clients struggle with (and I’ve struggled with as well) is problem skin — seeing some new surprise every time you look in the mirror. And it’s so discouraging when you hit CVS for face washes, cleansers, lotions, or even going for the more expensive stuff (like that $90 Chanel night cream), and nothing works to clear it up. For many women, this is a problem that lingers through the 20s, and it has a huge impact on confidence when you hang out with friends, meet new people or go on dates, and eats up a ton of time visiting dermatologists, getting facials and putting on concealer before you can leave the house. You might instinctively know that when you eat junk, your skin is not happy, but don’t know what you should eat instead or how to stick with a plan. Guess what — all of that confusion can end now.
Are you ready for clear skin? Let’s GET GLOWING from Tuesday, November 30 to Tuesday, December 7. Here’s how it works: 1. We’ll have a kick-off call on Tuesday, November 30. You’ll get a simple eating plan based on whole foods to clear up your skin from the inside out, along with a shopping list and easy, delicious recipes. 2. You’ll receive an email each night with one new practice to implement the next day. Together, we will work through the 7 secrets to clear skin, which include: - Why Bother? Set Your Intention - Wash Away the Toxins - Subtract (the top trigger foods) and Add (the good stuff) - Superglow with Superfoods - Leaving the House: Clear Skin Habits for your Social Life - Lotions and Potions: Gentle, Holistic Skin Care - Nourish and Flourish: Sensational Self-Care 3. You’ll receive email support from a certified health coach throughout the week. 4. You’ll have a private 15-minute coaching call with me near the end of the week. READY? The cost for the program is $97, and you can sign up using Paypal here. If you want to love what you see when you look in the mirror — join us!

I'm back from my trip on Trans-siberian Railroad across Russia, to Gobi Desert in Mongolia, all across China, on a slow boat along the Mekong River through Laos and down to Bangkok!

9 miles on the treadmill in 73 min 58 seconds!
what a great month. i ran on the treadmill, on the beach, on the streets and in central park.
i missed about 5 days, but always made up the miles the next day. i even got on the treadmill the week i had agonizing dental work done and walked/jogged with incline.
i had to buy more running shorts and do laundry more often.
i ran at least 7mph on the treadmill, always with a bit of incline.
i ran in the morning twice, but mostly prefer afternoon or evening.
i lost a few pounds.
friends noticed that i get a little grumpy if i don't run :)
running
ran around the park tonight. magnificent! nice to run outside now that the heat has broken.

Join us for a 3-Day Raw Food Detox, from Friday, August 13 to Sunday, August 15. Your investment is $30 and you can sign up using Paypal HERE. Email me at [email protected] with questions. Happy summer! Kerry “The most eye opening part of this detox for me is my lack of water intake! I realize that I don’t drink enough water. I am also in love with green smoothies! I will definitely be adding green smoothies to my diet. Also, I got a compliment, from a random person, in the store on my skin! I have never, in my 28 years had someone compliment my skin! That made my day!” -Carmela, Queens, NY
