I Think I Found a Superstar
So, for the past two years I have gone from one startup to another. Easily, I have spent and wasted close to $20k on developers who couldn't quite cut it. My first
startup involved me with little knowledge of IT or how a startup should run. I brought on people who I thought were knowledgeable and they ended shafting me in the end.
Fast forward to my current startup and I found a very capable young man in India who has helped streamline my vision and who is very affordable. He is not much of a designer but he can code his off. The problem is, he's in India and I am here in Charlotte. This is sufficient for a small minimum viable product, but to get something scalable to market, I need a developer here! The problem, I don't have an extra $120k stacks lying around to bring a developer on for a year to help me build. So, having prayed and forgotten about it, up pops a fuckin coding ROCKSTAR who emailed me!!!!
This is how it went down. I originally contacted the Chair of the Comp/Sci department who put me in contact with the gentleman who handles interns. After speaking for a while, he was intrigued by my startup and thought I should post my internship ASAP. So, he said, "Shaun, send me over your job description and I'll help you edit it to attract the right candidate." So, I did and boy, did he rip me a new one. Basically, he said he didn't know I was only offering equity, not cash, and I wouldn't likely get anyone to apply because, "You know they have a little thing called rent and food to contend with." So, I was bummed as hell. I decided not to post it and felt a little embarrassed that I thought my idea was worthy enough to attract a qualified coder. So, I had already submitted all of my paper work and uploaded the description but thought if I didn't take any more action, they would delete my stupid little profile about a startup looking for a coding genius.
Fast forward three weeks and I get a random email from UNCC's career department from a young man in the Comp/Sci department. He wants to apply to my startup! I tell you, I felt like a million bucks. So, this happened last week and I emailed to set up a phone meeting this week but I have yet to call him because I frankly don't have the time. I thought to myself that God has truly blessed me. Well, he must not be through with me yet because I got an email today from a candidate who is literally a rockstar!!!!!!!!!! She is currently a grad student in the Comp/Sci Department with a 3.86 gpa and graduated in the top 1% of her class in India! Besides that, she has a specialization in building apps as well...and she has worked with non-profits...and she is proficient in an assortment of coding languages! It's like she was tailor made for my company. I immediately emailed her back and I'm awaiting her response. I don't want to sound like a kid in a candy store, but, damn do I want her to join us.
This is another example of how God shows up when you let him have things in your life to make better. I was feeling in the dumps last week but I can tell you that I held on and now God is giving me a hand up. I am so humbled by his grace for me that I don't know what to do. I don't deserve it and I don't know why he has selected me to do the things that I've done and continue to do. I'm just so grateful.
My company has been accepted into a business accelerator for high growth companies. Stay tuned!
Nujabes
Nujabes = Peace
Last year, I happened upon an amazing discovery. Something so wonderful that I literally stopped what I was doing when I heard it. It was the music of Nujabes. Now, I must admit I am not a big fan of instrumentals. I love the human voice. I love a good voice, simple melodies, and heartfelt lyrics. All this changed when I listened to Nujabes.Â
His music is a cross between hip hop, classical, soul, and pure awesomeness. His album A Spiritual State currently is on heavy rotation in my player. The title track takes a delicate instrumental and adds pure wind harmonies that transports any listener to a place of peace. An almost mystical quality lends itself to this track. I challenge anyone who is angry or sad to listen to this with an open mind. If your mood is not lifted, you are either deaf or an idiot.Â
His other music also has this quality. He reminds me so much of J. Dilla in how he is able to transcend a beat. Ironically, both men past away in their prime.Â
So, if you are looking for great music to fill your quiet late nights...check out Nujabes.
Happy listening!
Mexico
In a few more weeks I will be visiting my frequented destination in Mexico. I will stay at my usual place, The Royal, in Playa Del Carmen and will likely see my trusted hotel captain, Hector. We will talk about our families, he's married since the last time we spoke, and he will fix my favorite tropical drink, a caprina with fresh passion fruit. Although much of this is the same one big difference will occur. We will be joined by our good friends Jeremiah and Erin. This may seem insignificant but trust me, it is a big deal.Â
Since graduate school and my first corporate job my then girlfriend and now wife Kia decided to break out our passports and traverse the world. Our rules were simple; everywhere we stay must be on the top 20 list of hotels in the world and we were not allowed to visit any place where more than 5 of our friends have visited. We wanted our global journey to be exclusive to a degree and our adventures untainted by past anectdotes.
What we quickly realized after skipping across the mediterranean, partying in Mexico, and enjoying Safari in Africa...we were the only ones on the trips our age. The realization came hard in Kiawah Island as we were looked at like novelty items in the hotel restaurant. Even the bartender and waiters seemed to smile and greet us as if they saw their long lost cousins who came home from up north driving the big Cadillac. Why was this, we thought. Our friend circle reads like a who's who of friends. In our immediate circle we have attorneys, investment bankers, writers, successful entreprenuers, CEO's...the list goes on. But with all of these friends we were always hard pressed to find people who were willing to throw caution to the wind, spin the globe, and start creating adventure.
I really hope minorities begin to get a global mindset and start continent hopping.
Living
Tonight I have realized what beautiful struggle life presents to us. This thing...this horrible and wonderful mass of confusion and love will fill your mind and drain your heart. With all its drudgery it is still a good life. It is still a blessing to smile...a wonder to laugh...and a joy to love.Â
New York
Being from the rural south it used to seem daunting whenever I began to travel around the world. No matter where I visit, New York stays new, unique, and inspiring. I think the city keeps an electric pulse of creativity and struggle permeating through every borough and bodega. With its rich history of people coming to the city with nothing but dreams and passion, it continues to feed and fuel those same individuals who visit today. No other place in the world has such a rich and fresh history.Â
I'm looking forward to my long weekend visit in the coming weeks.Â
A Letter to my Brother Approaching His First Year in College
Little bro, How goes it in your brave new world of independence and free thought? You have delved into your beautiful, ugly, wealthy, poor, loving, and lonely chasm of life. Like many before you, there awaits an opportunity to realize who you truly are and what you have to offer to the world. My best piece of advice to you, DO NOT SQUANDER THIS TIME! I donât mean to preach to you or sound like the rest of âadultsâ that arbitrarily give you âadviceâ on living. I just want to impart shared knowledge that I was privy to while living these 28 glorious years of life.Â
I didn't get a chance to speak with you at the cookout; 1) because the environment didn't really allow for it and 2) I just didn't feel like it (sorry cuz). I noticed that you remind me of myself some, particularly whenever I graduated high school and college. I never really saw myself in our small town but always envisioned myself in some realm of higher learning being surrounded by free thinkers and eclectic people that make up the oddities of life. In high school, I was probably the only football player who would read books during weightlifting or peruse encyclopedias (the internet in your instance) in my free time. I have always loved to âknowâ and couldn't stand it when I didn't. The hunger for that knowledge made me see the world and people in a different and sometimes sarcastic and pessimistic light. Be mindful of these occurrences and approach people with an open mind. You never know what lies beneath their thoughts and character. Some of the most intellectual people can be the most ruthless and cold hearted and some of the simplest minded are able to make you feel so extremely loved that all pressures of the world seem to exacerbate. You will learn quickly that you are not as smart as you think you are and you are not as cool as you appear to be. Everyone knows this, they just front like they donât. Remember, âcoolâ is relative. You make your own cool in any situation youâre in. Nothing is ever so serious to cause you to worry or lose your cool. The cyclical nature of life will always allow for another chance at almost any situation you encounter. So, always remember to take life easy (do well in school though). Nothing is ever that serious.Â
1. Take no pleasure in the company of fools! In college, this is a staunch piece of advice. When the time comes, this thought will be with you and you will realize that their company will need to be left alone. To me, fools are people who see no consequence of action. Fools can be in the classroom, your boy living down the hall, or some chic you met at some party. Your boy may be a fool if he says, âKev, dude, lets run this train on this chic!â A light should immediately pop into your head. First, because the shit is nasty (though I almost did it a few times) and two because you donât need your name attached to actions like that. In college, you donât want to be âthat guyâ. For example, I have a boy who got drunk in law school and started grabbing random girlâs asses at a party and started sweating profusely which resulted in him wiping his face every three seconds with the bottom of his shirt. Consequently, he fell out in the party and was forever known as Fall Out Boy, my personal favorite and one that I coined, The Sweaty Wipe, and numerous others that were bad. So in summation, donât do shit like that. 2. In the matter of women and girls, try as often as you can to ONLY WIFE GIRLS WITH WHO HAVE RESPECT FOR THE NATURAL DYNAMIC OF THE ROLES OF MEN AND WOMEN IN RELATIONSHIPS! You will find in your life that there is a mixture of confusion and self doubt that you will have to contend with if you are in a relationship with a female who grew up without a strong connection to an older, loving male. All of my serious girlfriends had great relationships with their fathers and all of the numerous girls I just âdatedâ seemed to always be in search of something because of the lost love of a dad. You may have better luck and if you do, let me know how that works out. Also, only date women who have âsomething to loseâ. To date a woman, or even have a friend, with nothing to lose will mean sure pitfall for you. This is because they will not see the consequence of their actions because they simply donât care. This will lead to girls âshowing outâ on you, which translates into them acting a damn fool in public. Avoid these girls. If she is fine, a weekly pass may be given to enjoy her company (Man Law, 2007 Edition pg. 3, paragraph 4, line 6). Do know, she is still subject to act outside of her demeanor that she has portrayed to you. Also, always use protection and never trust yourself in the company of fine women and alcohol. These two mixtures are like gun powder and matches. Alcohol, or liquid courage, will put the S on your chest to conquer the best, and when you get the chance you have to make sure you are prepared. Remember to âpour your own poisonâ if you drink. White boys are notorious for mixing and concocting âdeath drinksâ to parlay on unsuspecting homeboys. KNOW WHAT YOUâRE DRINKING! I hope my ramblings have given you a few points of advice. Shoot me an email if you ever have a question or want to discuss some abstract theory you have run across. I love wrapping my mind around things. Peace, Love, and Nappiness Brotha2ThaNight

I ran across this artist on one of my friends pages. The reason why I like it is because it tells an honest story of a young man's life. Listen and enjoy.
