From âBurning Country: Syrians in Revolution and Warâ by Robin Yassin-Kassab and Leila Al Shami
[I am afraid that it is too late for the leftists in the West to express any solidarity with the Syrians in their extremely hard struggle. What I always found astonishing in this regard is that mainstream Western leftists know almost nothing about Syria, its people, its political economy, its contemporary history. Rarely have I found a useful piece of information or a genuinely creative idea in their analyses. My impression about this curious situation is that they simply don not see us; it is not about us at all. Syria is only an additional occasion for their old anti-imperialist tirades, never the living subject of the debate⊠We, rank-and-file Syrians, refugees, women, students, intellectuals, human rights activists, political prisoners⊠do not exist⊠But honestly Iâve failed to discern who is right and who is left in the West from a leftist Syrian point of view⊠Before helping Syrians or showing solidarity with Syrians, the mainstream Western left needs to help themselves. â Yassin al-Haj Saleh]
SYRIA. Aleppo governorate. Aleppo. 2013. âHer name is Fadwa. Sheâs 20 years old, a widow with three children. Every time I asked the women of the Free Syrian Army why they decided to fight, the answer was: âMy husband died on the front lines, I will die on the front lines, may God help us.â I tried to make her feel at ease and make sure she didnât see me as a threat. The pose was her choice. I had to take the pictures fast. Black and white is a safe bet when you are not in control of the light. I was focusing on their eyes and their clothes. Is it a clichĂ© to say I canât stop looking at the baby?â

Jesse Owens wins gold in Nazi Germany, 1936.

I always found it fascinating of how great the man talked about his experience with the nazis, as they actually treated him with respect (fueled by propaganda most likely, but still), while in the US he wasnât even allowed to use the main entry point of the building hosting a party in his honor!
And apparently Hitler did shake his hand, something Owens insisted upon during the 60âČs, which is more striking considering how FDR never even acknowledged his accomplishments.Â
so what?
History is never, has never been, and will never be, black and white.

Remember the five simple rules to be happy: Free your heart from hatred. Free your mind from worries. Live simply. Give more. Expect less.

I love how your eyes sparkle whenever you look at me, whenever we talk. It feels like there are constellations of bright and unknown stars hiding underneath, waiting for them to be discovered. They are inviting me to draw in, into your abyss. To cast out those majestic lights to set your sky on fire. I love how your eyes turn my frowns into smiles. With just a lovely stare, it removes my worrying and doubts. I love how your eyes completes my day, I have seen beautiful eyes before, but yours will always be my favorite. I love how your eyes shine like my lucky star.
