In 1961, The Freedom Riders participated in freedom rides on segregated buses and sit-ins at white only diners to protest Jim Crow laws in the south. —— In 1965, Civil Rights leaders began a series of marches from Selma to Montgomery to demonstrate against police violence, the murder of activist Jimmie Lee Jackson, and for the right to vote. —— In 1968, MLK led the Memphis Sanitation Strikes, fighting for the rights of African American sanitation workers after the death of two men who were exposed to horrendous working conditions. The strikes were infiltrated by “The Invaders”, a grassroots group of Black youths and veterans who were militant in action, often escalating peaceful demonstrations into full blown riots. —— By the late 60’s, the Selective Service System disproportionately began sending African Americans to the frontlines of the war in Vietnam. —— All of these events resulted in violence, from the horrific brutality towards the Freedom Riders, to Selma’s infamous Bloody Sunday, to the bloodshed in Vietnam. —— There is no question that history is repeating itself today. The parallels are obvious. History revealed the systemic oppression that’s been built into our government and our society. The deck has always been stacked against people of color and specifically, African Americans. The murder of George Floyd and the countless Black lives before him is evidence that much has not changed. What we are witnessing is the result of a failed system. —— If there is any light at the end of the tunnel, it’s that we now have the national stage. The world has heard us, and they are listening. Take action. Donate to organizations directly supporting BIPOC. March alongside legitimate protesters. Call out racism everywhere it exists. Vote in November. We have the power to change the narrative. #BlackLivesMatter https://www.instagram.com/p/CA5gll6DFkm/?igshid=1a2w6pw8ooumk
