Brownieland Pictures is an Atlanta-based full-service video production company that partners with nonprofit organizations to create emotionally compelling videos that make a difference.
Recently, our work with the Atlanta Speech School received a very prestigious audience. Early childhood center CEO's from China were shown our "Every Opportunity" and "The Promise" videos which we created with the Atlanta Speech School. The videos had Chinese subtitles added and had the audience members in tears, realizing the importance of the message. Thanks to Walter Gilliam and the Ziegler Child Development Center at Yale University for sharing our work with the world. Check out the videos below.
Brownieland Pictures partnered with the Atlanta Speech School to create the video, “Every Opportunity,” back when they launched their K-3 content for the Read Right from the Start website. The video features a child who goes through his day being ignored, yelled at, and silenced. The video shows damage that is caused by this behavior and how taking the time to engage with children every day at every opportunity can reverse it. The video, picked up by The Huffington Post, the AJC and CNN’s Weekend Express HLN, went viral! We were humbled by the success of this piece and how it has resonated with people. We hope everyone gets a chance to see the video as it can make a difference in the lives of all our children, parents, and educators.
“The Promise,” is a video Brownieland Pictures produced in partnership with the Atlanta Speech School and was shown at a White House conference on education, showcasing children asking the viewer to make a promise that will forever shape their lives.
The Atlanta Speech School is the nation’s most comprehensive language center for children and adults. Established in 1938, the Atlanta Speech School’s four schools, five clinics, summer program, and professional development center seek to help each person develop his or her full potential through language and literacy. Each year, the School impacts the lives of approximately 1,400 children and adults at the Atlanta Speech School and more than 13,000 students throughout the State of Georgia through the work of its Rollins Center for Language & Learning professional development program. Find out more about the Atlanta Speech School HERE.
Brownieland’s Robyn Kranz Volunteers with Georgia Radio Reading Service
Recently, through her membership in the Junior League of Atlanta, Brownieland Pictures partner, Robyn Ellis Kranz has been volunteering at the Georgia Radio Reading Service (GaRRS), Georgia’s premier provider of information for individuals who are visually impaired or otherwise print-impaired.
One of the services that GaRRS provides are readings of books and publications for the visually impaired. "Being involved in this work is so meaningful," Kranz said. "I have a cousin who has been blind since birth, and she is fearless, never letting anything stop her from living a full life. In fact, she recently competed on America's Got Talent singing in the Angeles City Choir. Knowing I can give back a little bit to this community has been inspiring."
Follow along with Robyn on this volunteer effort in upcoming months and check out GaRRS for yourself HERE.
The mission of the Georgia Radio Reading Service (GaRRS) is to improve the quality of life for every Georgian who is blind, visually impaired, or has difficulty with the printed word. Volunteer readers from across Georgia record approximately 200 different programs each month including essential local information, local and national newspapers, popular books, and an array of magazines and quality-of-life programming. The programming is broadcast 24 hours a day, seven days a week and accessed by using a special radio, through their online webstream, by telephone, or by using a mobile app. Through these means, GaRRS can provide listeners with information, entertainment, and connections to their local communities. Each month, GaRRS needs at least 200 volunteers to record their various programs and would not be able to serve their listeners without dedicated volunteers. Find out more about volunteering with GaRRS HERE.

Brownieland Partners with AFAEE to Showcase Award-Winning Educators
The Atlanta Families Awards for Excellence in Education (AFAEE) has partnered with Brownieland Pictures for many years. In that time, we've celebrated with almost 50 winning educators, showing what it means to be excellent. What better way to showcase AFAEE beyond the awards then to see what other benefits these past winners have given and received since they got their awards? Brownieland had the opportunity to talk with 7 past winners and see what they have been up to since winning, what the award has done to change their lives, and why it's so important for all of us to celebrate educators for their amazing contributions to our children and our communities. Check it out here!
Atlanta Families’ Awards for Excellence in Education (AFAEE) understands how critical teacher and leader quality is to ensure that every child receives an excellent education. Educators’ impact and achievements go largely unrecognized, and many educators are not fully empowered to support their students. Through recognition, empowerment, and financial support, excellent educators can multiply the impact of their efforts and elevate the quality of public education in Metro Atlanta. AFAEE’s merit-based awards program has a rigorous application process designed to identify educators demonstrating increases in student achievement, enhancement of student self-esteem, and collaboration with community stakeholders. In 2015, AFAEE expanded its impact to include five districts in Metro-Atlanta: Atlanta Public Schools, Cobb County Schools, DeKalb County Schools, Fulton County Schools, and Gwinnett County Public Schools. Find out more about this incredible organization HERE.
For the Brownieland Pictures January Volunteer Project, the Brownieland Team packed meals for Open Hand Atlanta, a nonprofit empowering people to live healthier, more productive lives!
Open Hand Atlanta serves a diverse population of men, women, and children with unique nutrition needs. Open Hand’s programs and services are designed to help empower clients with the tools and knowledge they need to better manage their health and assist healthcare providers in the early identification and treatment, as well as the prevention or progression, of many nutrition-sensitive illnesses. Open Hand Registered Dietitians plan balanced seasonal menus tailored to the level of nutrition care determined for each client’s needs. They offer nutrition programs and services including meal programs, nutritional education programs, and collaborative programs.
Open Hand’s prepared meal programs serve a variety of clients in a number of settings. Primarily, Open Hand provides freshly cooked health-promoting meals, combined with snacks or supplements, to meet the daily nutrition needs of low-income men, women, and children who are dealing with a chronic disease in addition to homebound seniors and disabled individuals.
Open Hand’s evidence-based nutrition education programs are designed to empower patients and caregivers to take control of their health with nutrition topics ranging from portion control, healthy eating habits and hands-on food prep to physical activity, gardening, goal-setting, and self-management. Nutrition education is offered to at-risk individuals from all walks of life — from low-income youth and families to seniors, from veterans to victims of abuse.
Open Hand Atlanta believes in partnering with the community to positively impact health and social services, and work closely with several other nonprofit organizations to implement collaborative programs that address these issues. It is only through these valued collaborative relationships that Open Hand Atlanta can carry out their mission and touch the lives of thousands of those in need.
At Open Hand, people from all walks of life come together to touch the lives of thousands of others who are not as fortunate. Volunteers have a lot of fun in the process—due in part to the wonderful food service and distribution staff that, along with other remarkable volunteers, make them feel as though they are always among friends. Without the dedication of each and every one of these incredible people, Open Hand Atlanta simply could not do their vital work in the community. Volunteer opportunities include meal packing, meal delivery, market basket packing, cooler bag packing, culinary assistance, and special events administration. If you’re volunteering as an individual, visit Individual Volunteers, or if you would like to schedule a volunteer opportunity for a group of 5 or more, please visit Group Volunteers.

For their December Volunteer Project, Brownieland Volunteered with the Pajama Program Reading Center Atlanta
In the spirit of giving, the Brownieland Team volunteered with the Pajama Program Reading Center Atlanta providing new pajamas and books to children in need for the Brownieland December Volunteer Project.
The Pajama Program promotes a comforting bedtime routine for children affected by instability to help them thrive. At the Atlanta Reading Center, the programming focuses on shared reading between a child and an adult volunteer. During the holiday season for the last several years, The Woodruff Arts Center has partnered with Carter’s and the Pajama Program to collect pajamas for children in need in the metro-Atlanta area. Collection bins were located at The Woodruff Arts Center and Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre during A Christmas Carol, which is generously sponsored by Carter’s. Carter’s supported the Pajama Program by hosting an in-store and online campaign encouraging its customers to donate new pajamas and funds to the Pajama Program to help support every child’s right to a good night.
The Pajama Program believes that every child has the right to a loving good night, complete with the comforting bedtime ritual of changing into new, clean pajamas and enjoying an enchanting story. Therefore, all of their Reading Center programming is complete with the magical gifts of new pajamas and storybooks to each child that attends a shared reading experience.
The children who attend their programming are between the ages of 4 and 18 and visit from local community partners including shelters, Pre-kindergarten/Head Start programs, group homes, Title I schools, and other child-serving organizations.
Reading Buddies are paired with school age children during the volunteer one hour Reading Party to do shared reading. During shared reading, Reading Buddies may read between 1 and 4 books and engage in conversations that inspire creativity. Afterwards, children will select a book to take home with the help of their Reading Buddy.

Brownieland’s Robyn Kranz Crosses the Finish Line as Volunteer Coach with GOTR
Girls on the Run Atlanta wrapped up their fall season with the 2018 Girls On The Run 5k presented by Piedmont Healthcare at Georgia State University Stadium. We braved the cold to run and let the girls reap the rewards of their training. All of their hard work paid off as they all finished and showed everyone how strong they are. As a coach for two seasons, I am still in awe of the commitment and benefits that Girls On The Run gives to all of the girls on our team. I saw walkers who couldn't do a lap when they started the program turn into some of our fastest runners on the team. I encourage everyone to become a coach or get involved with GOTR. It really is a great experience. And as they say at Girls On The Run Atlanta: The finish line is just the beginning!
Girls on the Run (GOTR) is a nonprofit dedicated to helping young women fulfill their potential by decreasing the percentage of at-risk activities and empowering a generation of self-aware girls who are tomorrow’s role models for a healthy, balanced lifestyle. GOTR offers a life-changing, experiential learning program that combines training for a 5k with character building and self-esteem enhancing activities. The program objective is to reduce the display of at-risk behaviors among participants by providing the girls with the tools to make healthy decisions and form positive self-images. GOTR serves girls in 3rd to 8th grades in Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb, and Gwinnett. Approximately 52% of participants receive a full or partial scholarship. GOTR is proud to have never turned a girl away because of her family’s financial status. Nationally, there are 200+ councils in all 50 U.S. states using the same curriculum and program structure. Girls in Title 1 schools can participate on a full scholarship and receive the program, 5k registration (for the participant & family member) as well as a pair of running shoes. Brownieland Volunteers with Pebble Tossers in Celebration of National Family Volunteer Day
In celebration of National Family Volunteer Day, the Brownieland Team volunteered with Pebble Tossers, a youth development nonprofit with a mission to empower and equip youth to lead through service.
Pebble Tossers, GenerationOn, and the Walt Disney Company hosted the National Family Volunteer Day (NFVD) BeltLine Beautification Project which took place along Pebble Tossers’ adopted section of the BeltLine. The Adopt-the-Atlanta BeltLine program provides an opportunity for community groups to play a direct role in improving and maintaining the Atlanta BeltLine. In 2013, Pebble Tossers adopted a section of the Atlanta BeltLine near Piedmont Park behind the Park Tavern and implemented a Daffodil, Wildflower and Pollinator garden.
Volunteers gathered to participate in projects which included planting 500 daffodil bulbs and maintaining their Urban Wildlife Habitat and Pollinator Garden areas. The daffodil bulbs were part of The Daffodil Project, a worldwide effort to plant 1.5 million daffodils to represent the 1.5 million children killed during the Holocaust. There were also stations set up for making cards for the military, sorting candy, picking up debris along the trail and other activities.
“Volunteering is a great way for kids and adults to make new friends, develop empathy and compassion for their neighbors, and even pick up a new skill or two. When families volunteer together, parents have the opportunity to reinforce family values in a fun environment, ” says Jen Guynn, Founder and Executive Director of Pebble Tossers.
Pebble Tossers celebrates ten years of igniting the passion of volunteerism in youth ages 2-22 by matching their talents and abilities with age-appropriate service projects in their community. In its first ten years, Pebble Tossers has engaged youth in over 34,000 volunteer service hours and mobilized 14,605 volunteers in Metro Atlanta. The Brownieland Team was so inspired by our volunteer work through our #10in10 Volunteer Campaign last year that we have decided to continue volunteering with a different nonprofit each month and sharing their stories! Be sure to follow us on our social media outlets to discover the incredible organizations we connect with this year and their #Stories for the Greater Good!
Brownieland Volunteers with Second Life Atlanta in Honor of Adopt-A-Dog Month
In honor of Adopt-A-Dog Month, the Brownieland Team volunteered with Second Life Atlanta, a nonprofit organization with a lot of heart helping pets find loving homes in the community.
Second Life Atlanta’s mission is to provide cash donations to animal rescue organizations with the purpose of reducing pet overpopulation through adoption, spay/neuter programs and education/awareness. Volunteering with Second Life Atlanta offers many opportunities to support this incredible organization that has given over one million dollars in grants to animal charities. You can volunteer at one of their stores, at community events and festivals, or from home utilizing expertise in marketing, grant writing, administrative support and more. While volunteering with Second Life Atlanta, we met so many wonderful people who love volunteering in the stores and come back to help out on a regular basis. Volunteers are the heart of the organization, and you can make a difference with just a few hours a week or month.
Inspired by their rescue Dalmatian, Lucky, the organization was created by owners, Tanya and Toby, with the idea of combining a love of rescue animals and bargain shopping. It was a dream realized and has been supported by their community and pet lovers ever since! You can support Second Life Atlanta by donating, volunteering, or shopping at their upscale thrift stores benefiting homeless pets. You can even meet some of the pets who need adopting while they make themselves at home at the stores and at events they hold in the parking lot. Brownieland Partners with GEEARS to Inspire Quality Early Childhood Education (VIDEO)
The importance of quality early childhood education is the focus of GEEARS, Georgia Early Education Alliance for Ready Students. Recently, GEEARS held a gubernatorial summit on early education and they asked Brownieland to create a video that shared the voices of parents in Georgia talking about what was important in their child's early educational experience. We partnered with Sheltering Arms and Druid Hills Child Development Center to capture some amazing parents, educators, and children, helping to further advance Georgia's early childhood education.
The mission of Georgia Early Education Alliance for Ready Students (GEEARS) is to support high-quality early learning and healthy development for Georgia’s youngest children, from birth to five, by championing policies, promoting innovative and evidence-based practices, and building public will. GEEARS was established in 2010 to help business, civic and government leaders maximize the economic return on the state’s investments in early care and learning. Their vision is by 2020, all Georgia students will enter kindergarten prepared to succeed and on a path to read to learn by third grade. GEEARS is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization operating to inspire and provide leadership for a statewide movement on quality early learning and healthy development for all children ages birth through five.
