Sad update everyone, Tama recently passed away… An estimated 3,000 people, including railway officials, attended Tama the cat’s funeral on Sunday, days after she died of heart failure aged 16. [x]

For those who haven’t read articles about it, the local shrine elevated her to a god. She’s now the Eternal Stationmaster and patron god of the station.

ahhh gentle pure tama!! <333 for those down about tama’s passing, a good ending–the station has found a successor to her! another calico named nitama (literally TAMA TWO) who was irl buddies with tama off duty AND was a kitty receptionist while tama was around (yes there are RECEPTIONIST CATS at this train station bless it there is a full cat bureaucracy and job market). nitama is pretty chill about the hat and while not as serene as tama was, will undoubtedly come into it with age and experience.

You probably know there is a statue of a dog called Hachikou near Shibuya station. The dog is remembered for his loayality as he kept waiting for his owner - professor Ueno - every day at the station even ten years after the professor’s death. The faculty of agriculture of Tokyo university (where professor Ueno worked) in 2015 elected a statue, where Hachikou is being reunited with his owner.

Obidome (called pocchiri in the Kyoto language) of the maiko Fukutomo of Miyagawacho. It’s the most expensive part of a maiko outfit. This one is made with jade, cooper and amethyst. It’s made to look a fruit and its leaves. (Source)
