Tanil’s eyes shot to Brynn, her eyes wide and shit quickly bit her lip, lifting Del up over her head and setting her onto the ground. “Del, run off for a little bit would you?” she asked, tapping Del’s back.

“But Dad.” Delmira started, but Tanil shook her head.

“Not now. Just, do me this one favor.” Del pouted but obeyed, skipping off but still staying in sight. Tanil watched her for a moment, hands on her hips, she didn’t want to look at the drell for the moment. “That’s my daughter, and I only just now came back into her life after ten years of not being around. So, I hope you would understand when I say I want all my attention on her.” She ran her hand through her hair, breathing a heavy sigh. “I haven’t been in any sort of relationships since her mother either. I don’t even know if I’m quite ready for that yet. I appreciate that, you saying that Brynn I just….” 

Tanil dropped her hand from her head, thumping it lightly against her thigh. “Delmira needs me, and I need her more than anyone else. She doesn’t want me to be alone, but at the same time I feel better with only her as my family. I don’t have as much time as her in life. I won’t live as long as she will, so I want to spend every moment giving her good memories.”

Her brows drew together in surprise when Del was told to go play. She did not mind being turned down in front of the child. It would, perhaps, teach the child how to do so. She watched the child run off and then turned to her father to hear what she knew was coming. When the words did come, she smiled, not put out in the slightest. She had expected such and the woman was also as polite as she expected her to be. “I understand completely, were I in your shoes, with a second chance with my own child, I would hope that I would be compelled to do the same.” 

The smile slipped from her face, she ran a hand over the spines on her head and let it fall back into her lap. “I’m not exactly relationship material anyway. My boss won’t release me from my job unless I marry or am too maimed to perform my duties; it also doesn’t tend to keep me in one place for too long.” A wry smile formed on her lips. “I do not usually ask people out and you..” she released a breath, “were the first woman I ever asked. You intrigued me - but maybe, it was you and her,” she motioned towards the child, “that intrigued me most. Maybe that is why I asked you out, to find out which intrigued me more.” She chuckled. “Sounds ridiculous, I’m sure. Perhaps, I am just...” envious was a strong work and not quite right, “romanticizing what you have with your daughter. Regardless,” she chuckled, ran her hands down her thighs to smooth the wrinkles, and settled back against the bench, “you needn’t worry, I expected nothing less and am comfortable with your decision. Though, if you ever want a night out...the both of you, let me know. I’m sure we can find a kid-vid and some food an adult would dread eating,” she said with a chuckle.” She hoped Tanil realized the offer was made in friendship, nothing more. She had no intention of asking the woman out on a date again. She knew the human held no interest in her and  she was fine with that. Not everyone was into drell and even fewer were into her...She just hoped the woman eventually found someone who moved her, because a heart was big enough to love another without diminishing the love for her daughter... in fact, both loves could be strengthened by each other. At least, that is the way her eyes saw it and she was pretty sure that was the way Del saw it too. It was only Tanil’s eyes that remained wide shut.

Tanil slowly turned towards Brynn, her eyes narrowing at the drell at the comment. The look on her face clearly expressing her already distaste for Delmira’s insistence. “Don’t you start.”

“Widen your choices!” Del shouted more enthusiastically, giggling at her father’s groan. 

“Can’t I just relax and focus on you and work? Don’t you want me to give you a ton of attention, Del?” Tanil asked, glancing up a little at her daughter.

Del’s eyes squinted, her lips tugging to the side as she considered it. “Mmmmmno.”

“Damn.”

“Language.” Tanil sighed, dropping her head.

She held up her hands in mock surrender, but continued to be amused by the banter between the two. She patted Tanil’s arm. “You’ll survive,” she said with a light laugh. Her intention had not been to find a date for Tanil, but to amuse her daughter. “You know,” she said, bringing a finger to her lips as if in deep thought. She took a deep breath to rally her courage. When it came to this sort of thing, she had little. Se looked from the daughter to her father and gave a slight nod, she was going to do this, even if she was shot down. Didn’t matter one way or the other, she still enjoyed their company. “Perhaps, you should consider a drell. If, hypothetically speaking, one were to ask you out, what would you say to her?” Oh, real smooth, Bree. How could anyone resist that? Her cheek folds flushed with color, but she still looked up at Delmira and winked. In truth, she was waiting to be kindly refused.

Eye Candy

Tanil hung out at the Presidium, not too often, but Delmira had insisted they go people watching together since it was Tanil’s day off. Delmira sat on her shoulders, watching the people walk past. Tanil rested her hands on Del’s feet, looking already displeased with her current predicament.

“What about that one?” Delmira asked, pointing at a turian man walking by.

“No.” Tanil answered plainly.

“That one?”

“That’s a salarian.”

“Well Dad, you gotta widen you’re choices.”

“Shut up, you’re eleven.” Tanil grumbled, rolling her eyes, thankful Delmira couldn’t see her or else she’d get a large talking to. “You can’t expect me to go out with a salarian.”

She listened to the exchange for a moment. It was sweet, but almost sad as well. That Delmira was trying to find a date for her father. She joined them and pointed to a male human. “What about him?” Her mouth dropped open. Was that a female elchor?? She turned to Tanil with a devilish glint in her eyes. “What about her, Tanil? Delmira’s right, you should widen you’re choices.” She looked up at the child and smiled.

Long Time Gone

“Yeah. I guess the fact that I had a child at such a young age, it only means I’ll be around longer with her.” Tanil smiled, she was happy with that. Even being absent in Del’s life the last eleven years, she could make up for it now. “Yes, they’re good friends. Of course, who can say no to that?” Tanil pointed at Delmira who was now lying on her back and covering her face with the shreds of grass she had plucked from the ground. Del blew, the grass covering her mouth flying into the air. 

Tanil glanced at Brynnia then, laughing lightly at the sound of the drell’s stomach. “No, we haven’t eaten lunch yet ourselves so. Company while we eat isn’t too much to ask. Del!” The girl launched up at the sound of her name, the stray grass falling into her lap as she sat up. “Hungry?” Tanil asked, the girl nodding rapidly. Tanil waved Delmira over, the little girl getting up and running to her father. Tanil stood up then, straining her neck a little bit as she cracked her back. “Let’s go get something to eat then, you’re probably hungry.” Tanil bent down, wiping off the stray grass still on Del’s front while the girl eyed Brynnia.

“I’m always hungry Dad.” Del stated, Tanil rolling her eyes. Del waved at the stranger. “Hello.”

She smiled softly at Delmira’s antics. She’d never done anything like that as a child. It was an honor to serve the hanar, but she’d missed out on so much. She’d had to grow up at five, when she was found. She did not even know what happened to her parents for hiding her from the hanar. She didn’t think the hanar would have killed them, but they were gone by the time she was out of training and could look for them. Her eyes returned to the human. “Do you ever think about having more children?” She sighed and looked down at the ground. “I want them,” she said wistfully. “but my job won’t release me until I marry or am too maimed to fulfill my duties. Our fates are not always our own,” she murmured softly.  

She blushed harder at the woman’s laugh and placed a hand over her belly as if to silence any more backtalk. When she called her daughter’s name, Bree turned in time to see blades of grass flutter down, scattering on and around the child. Even had she the chance to do that as a child, Kahje didn’t have grass..at least not in the domes cities. They had various potted trees and plants, but nothing that would require much humidity. The outer islands, she’d been told, had thick grass, flowers and magnificently tall trees. But she’d never been there. There were drell who chose to live in the outer islands, for one reason or another, but the crossed the sea far faster than those living in the drier, domed cities. 

She smiled. “I am pleased you accepted my invitation. My treat, as I am the one that invited you, if you would not mind.” Gods knows she had little else to spend what she earnings on. Her weapons and expenses were covered, her pay was her own. Perhaps, she would see a volus about investing, She rarely thought about her future, because she could not envision it as anything but what it currently was. But finding out young Kol had been struck by the disease, woke her up in that regard. 

She rose when the other woman did and watched as Tanil cleared away the clinging bits of grass. She laughed softly at the child’s remark and inclined her head to the child. “Hello to you, too. My name is Brynnia. But you can call me Bree or Brynn, if you like. And I will let you in a secret.” She lowered her voice. “I’m always hungry too.” She rubbed her belly. “My belly is a bottomless black hole. But, shhhh,” she held a finger to her lips. “Don’t tell anyone. - or I’ll never be asked out on a date again.” She plucked a stray blade of grass  from between Delmira’s scalp crests and watched it flutter a moment, before falling to the ground. She wasn’t likely to be asked on a date, but the child didn’t need to know that. 

“Follow me, where we’re going , we’ll need a skycar.” She headed in the direction of the skycar lot to grab a taxi. It was where she’d been going when she caught sight of the child. When they reached the taxi, she placed her hand against the holo-display and then held her credit chip up to be scanned. The door whooshed open.  She programmed in the destination once they were all settled. The auto pilot took control and merged them into traffic. She was not a fan of auto-pilots, but she did not own a skycar on the Citadel. She looked from Tanil to Delmira. “it’s a restaurant and hotel called the Blue Diamond over on The Strip. We’re not dressed well enough to visit it proper, but we’ll take an elevator up to a private room. It’s the most amazing place and their cuisine rivals anything you will find on Illium.” Her eye sparkled in excitement and she turned to the child...but, perhaps, one day  we can dress up and I will show you the VIP stairs and flooring. It’s transparent. But only one way. The lower floor cannot look up our dresses,” she said with a laugh. “It is very surreal.” 

After the car settled on the landing pad of the Blue Diamond, she led them in to the reception area. 

The asri hostess caught sight of them and smiled.  “Welcome back, Sera Krios.” She eyed their clothing. “One of the private rooms?”

Bree inclined her head. “Of course.” 

The asari grabbed the datapad menus and led the way to an elevator. It bypassed the VIP area and opened directly in the back where the private rooms were located. There were five private rooms in total. One for each of the owners and one for private rental. She led them to V’Atre’s room. The door opened at their approach. The door was to the left of the room She walked straight forward to the dining table and set down the datapad menus. To the left of the table was a large sofa sitting in front of a huge vidscreen, where vidgames and vids could be watched. Further into the room was a small dance floor on the left and a small band pit on the right. Further still was a billiards table and a wet bar, complete with private bartender. 

“I will be back in a few moments to get your order.” She turned hopeful eyes to Bree. “Have you seen Kol?”  Bree sighed. “Not in a few days, Plia. He’s a busy man.” 

The asari nodded and slipped out of the room. 

She sat down at the table and looked at the other two. “Unlike normal restaurants, where you place an order by programming it into the datapad and then it is delivered to you. The VIP and private rooms here have that function turned off. You can click on what you want to eat, but the hostess will return to collect your order and then lead the waiters in delivering. it. And - “ The bartender stood silently at the table, but did not speak to interrupt. Bree smiled at the human. “I was just going to tell them that you will be taking care of our drinks and,” she turned to the child with a big smile, “they have just about anything you can think of.” She returned her attention to the bartender. “I would like a water and a spiced tea.” 

After he took their orders, he returned to the bar to fulfill the order. She turned to her companions. “Is this not wonderful? I rarely get the chance to come here. But, once in a while, it is good to have a break from reality. Because all of this? It’s surreal to me. I can’t imagine living this life daily.” Her dark, sparkling gaze turned to the child. “If your father is okay with it, you are welcome to check out the vids and vid games programmed into the vidscreen.”

Long Time Gone

Tanil shook her head, keeping her eyes on Delmira. “No, my parents died way back and… I don’t have any close family that will live as long as she does.” She gestured to the young asari girl who was now starting to… crawl along the grass like a worm. The sight made Tanil smile, a laugh escaping her nose. “I know she’ll be fine, I have a few friends who agreed to keep an eye on her long after I’m gone and I trust them.” She looked at Brynnia. “But thank you.”

Tanil nodded in understanding, work always came first. “I’m happy work keeps me here. Granted I started a family long before I had any plans to settle down. Del was… an accident more so.” She shrugged. “A happy accident.” She glanced at Brynnia, curious. “I don’t have any burdens. I have an eleven year old but that doesn’t mean I’m not willing to listen. Its one of the things I’m good at, that and using a gun, but that’s not important right now.” Tanil gestured to the Presidium and how nice it was at this time. “Its the best day to lay out your worries. I’ve had my time to wash away mine.”

It was obvious the child’s mother was no longer in the pictured, that was unfortunate. “You are young yet, perhaps, the Gods will smile upon you and you shall be at her side until she steps into adulthood.” She was lucky her species was as long lived as it was. Though, she supposed the vorcha thought the same thing about drell. Of course, that still did not equate to be the same, for asari lived so very long.  “You are lucky to have such valued friendships.” Outside of Kol and Thane the only people she spent time with were immortals. Granted, they lived a long life, but their jobs often kept them too busy for much socialization. Maybe Feron, but she wasn’t sure if she could call him friend. 

Her belly had the audacity to make its intent known with a slight growl. She flushed. “Would it be too forward for me to ask if you two would join me in getting something to eat?” She flushed again at having asked such a question. She just didn’t want to be alone. She was alone far too much. She’d rather forego food and just sit here, if that’s what it took. She needed this moment of normalcy. Yes, normalcy. It had nothing to do with the fact that she found the woman intriguing and the child adorable.

Delmira had taken to picking the grass, developing a pile of grass strands while her father watched on. At the sound of someone approaching, Tanil turned towards the newcomer. When the drell spoke Tanil offered her a warm smile. 

“I remember.” Tanil replied, noticing Brynnia’s hesitation, although it was sometime ago that they had met… and in a bar. She patted the spot next to her, offering the drell a seat before she glanced back at Delmira running her fingers through the grass. “I guess I am pretty lucky. Sometimes I worry though, when I pass, she’ll be left alone. She’s strong, like her mother so sometimes I realize she’ll be just fine. Tough as a krogan.” Tanil chuckled, running a hand through her hair and glancing back at Brynnia. “Sorry, was thinking out loud. What brings you to the Presidium?”

She looked from the child to the woman next to her. “I am assuming you do not have close family?  I am sorry.” She put her hand over the other woman’s squeezed it and withdrew. “She’ll be fine. Children are so very resilient.” It wasn’t her fault Tanil didn’t have family, but it was empathy that spoke the words. “I’m not blessed with a child, uncertain if I ever will be,” her voice was tinged with regret. “But I would be in your position as well. My brother and nephew have Keprel’s, I’ve no other close family. My job doesn’t preclude to having close friends. I’m feel like I’m adrift most times.” Her eyes return to the little girl. 

“Work brings me back. My whole life consists of hopping from ship to ship, fulfilling my bosses...requests.Not that I’m not proud to do so, it’s just sometimes I wish I could just sit back and have a life....I watch others live their lives and I feel like nothing more than a spectator in my own life.” She flushed. “You have my apology. You did not ask me to drop my woes into your lap. I do not wish to add to your burden.”

Long Time Gone

Tanil sat on a bench in the Presidium her chin resting in her palm as she smiled. Delmira hopped around on the grass, doing the occasional cart wheel, falling over and giggling as she played in the pleasant weather. Granted it was all simulated, it was still a good day to have a day off and relax. Tanil still wore her C-Sec uniform, watching her daughter roll around on the grass. There was some serious grass stains she would have to clean later, but now she just let Del play.

“Don’t go too crazy, Del.” Tanil said, drawing very little attention from her daughter as Delmira continued to roll around on the grass in wide circles.

She caught sight of the child playing and watched her for some moments, a yearning in her that she couldn’t deny. She wanted to be a mother, but so rarely was she ever around her own kind. And the only males she knew of here were already taken....or related to her. 

She looked around and caught, what she assumed, was the child’s mother on a bench nearby. Instead of being caught staring and the wrong idea come into the woman’s head, she decided to join her at the bench. Up close, she realized she’d met her before. At a bar. She searched her memories. Tanil. That was it.

“Tanil,” she said quietly. “I had not realized you had children. I envy you that.” Bree blinked, then blushed, realizing the human may not have remembered her. “I’m Brynnia Krios. We met some time ago.” She watched the child for a few moments. “You are very lucky to have her.”
