Unit 10. Business Travel Operation

As if i didn’t find the world of business confusing, they mix in travelling. Planning a business trip is the most difficult thing. It feels like you are sending a 10 year abroad alone rather than a full grown adult. Having to make sure everything is precise, as a single mistake in the real world can cause not only for you to get fired but the organisation may not use your company again. The experience however will continue to help me in my years to come. for example i could end up working for an organisation and they need me to plan something for them i could easily create the perfect trip for them without any mistakes.  This is simply the beginning of long list of skills I need to acquire.

Atlantis, The Palm is  hotel resort located at the apex of the Palm Jumeirah. It was the first resort to be built on the island and is themed on the myth of Atlantis but includes distinct Arabian elements. 

The 1,539 room nautically themed resort has two accommodation wings, also referred to as the Royal Towers. It is complemented by the Aquaventure water park and the locally popular Nasimi Beach which frequently plays host to concerts and other events.  

The incredible 18 metres high Dale Chihuly sculpture, situated in the reception of Atlantis the Palm, makes for both a spectacular and lasting impression.

Holly Bennett- Work Experiance

I have completed my week placement at Manchester United Soccer Schools. During the week I was helping out with the events sector. It was interesting to learn about how events are organised, and how problems are dealt with on the day of an event. From doing my work experience I have developed new skills and learned how to use different types of equipment. Most days I was helping out in the office and shadowing my colleague, Nikki. On the Wednesday i went to one of the events that had been organised and got to see how it ran. I now have a better idea of how the event industry works and also how Manchester United operate. From doing my work experience I have been offered to help out in other events during the summer. I think that my work experience has made me realise that events may not be what i want to go into anymore as I now realise a lot of it is office based.

Adriana Miodowska- Work experience

I have completed my work experience at Cafe Muse in Manchester. It was very interesting to see how it is to work full time at a cafe. My responsibility was to be polite at all times. I had different tasks depending on time of a day and what had to be done. Mostly I was giving out food and drinks and then I was clearing the tables to make sure the place is clean for next customers. When it was quiet I had to fold napkins with cutlery.

Rebecca Cunliffe's Work Experience

Last week i have a 5 day work experience at a 5* hotel. While there I did various task on each day which I greatly enjoyed and learn a lot about the hotel industry and also the hotel. Each day I worked from 9 - 4 so that I could see what it would be like working in a full - time job. 

On Monday I was working on the front desk and got to see how guests where checked in and also checked out. This was a good experience as I got to learn about the system which would be good in the future within my career if I needed to use that system. 

On Tuesday I was working with in-room service. This was a great experience as I got to see how the carts are set up and also how they greet the customers. 

On Wednesday I was working in the restaurants. This was great as I got to learn how to set the tables professionally and I also learnt how to fold napkins 3 different ways. This is good skill for my career if i work in a restaurant. 

On Thursday I was working in house-keeping although it was a good experience it also was the hardest as I had to make super king size bed on my own. I also learnt how the room had to be set up that is up to a 5* standard. 

Finally on the Friday I was working on Conferencing and Banqueting. On this day I had more interaction with the guests as I was serving coffee and tea. After dinner I had to set up for a function that was happening at the weekend. This was different to the set up that I learnt in the restaurant. 

Overall I had a great week at the hotel and learned a lot of skills that not only with help me with the rest of the coursework but also in the future with my career.

Rebecca Entwisle- Work experience

For my work placement, I worked at Holiday Inn. This is located in Bolton near the Town centre. I worked Monday to Friday, 9:00-2:30, with a half an hour break for lunch. On Monday I had to deal with a group called 050, this was a large group of 88 people over fifty who book a room and a meal once a month and meet up with people they don't know. I had to sell tickets for £11.00 to them all one by one and deal with some really rude people. I had to greet people politely and even if they was rude i had to remain calm and carry on with my job. That day I also completed numerous paperwork and then filed them in numerical order which took forever. I was also in charge of scanning peoples gym memberships and giving them a key to the facilities so that they could access them. I developed skills such as cash handling and developed my telephone manner. 

On Tuesday, there were numerous conferences going on all around the building, I had to make sure everyone knew which conference room they were in and make sure they knew where it was. I also had to buzz guests in who used the lower ground car park. Furthermore I had to ring up all the guests who hadn't checked out by 11 o clock, this was hard as not everyone answered their phones and some even just left without checking out as they didn't have to pay for anything. i also had to deliver guests dry cleaning to their rooms and was trusted with a key card in case the guest wasn't in. 

On Wednesday, I couldn't work on the reception desk as a blind girl was doing her work experience on the telephone and their was not enough room for all of us behind the desk. So on Wednesday I worked in the reservation and revenue office. I really enjoyed it there as the women was so friendly and some of them was not much older than me so we had a really good atmosphere in the office. They really welcomed me and by the end of the day I felt like I had worked there for years! During the day I was taking reservations for the hotel as this department only take reservations if the guests want to book at a pre-paid rate, this meant that the guests could not change or cancel their reservation and had to pay upfront. The benefit of this is that they can have it at a cheaper rate than if you book on the night or in advance but pay on departure. 

On Thursday, I chose to again work in the reservation and revenue office as I really enjoyed the previous day there. On that day I was taught how to use their database called 'brilliant'. It was really easy to use and I used it to take payments for guests who booked at a pre-paid rate. I also updated guests information on their folio, this included their address, their car registration plate and any preferences on their room. I also cut up invitations to an important event that the hotel was holding. 

It was my last day at Holiday Inn and i was back at the reception desk. I had to check out guests by 11 o clock and ring round those who hadn't yet checked out. I also transferred calls to each department and took notes. Furthermore I had to collect a mans luggage from his room as it was past check out time and he thought he could just leave his luggage in his room till tonight, without realising that house keeping had to clean his room ready for another guest that was staying the night. 

After 5 days working at Holiday Inn, I have realised that I would consider working at a hotel as I really enjoyed my time there. I also developed a lot of skills, qualities and behaviors such as my telephone manner and my organisational skills. I also got offered a job at Holiday Inn which unfortunately I cannot take as it is a full time job and I am still at college but I am awaiting information about another night time job that may be available.

Amy Riley Work Experience

On the 12th May 2014 was the first day of my week of work experience at the Hotel Renaissence. For the first two days I was doing house keeping the manager of house keeping was called Donna she was a really nice welcoming person who was very polite to me throughout the week. Monday I was sent off with a lady called Janet and we were told to clean public areas which is basically main lobby, toilets, food and drink area and making sure all floors and nice and clean. I really enjoyed this today as I got to see different kind of areas of the hotel. Tuesday 13th I was happy as I arrived to work at 9am and then Donna told me to go have and a coffee in the canteen as I do not need to start work till 9:30am as this was the time when Val started Val is the lady who I was with this day. I insisted that I started at 9am and helped Donna with work but she was happy for me to start at 9:30am and I thought that was really kind of her. Tuesday was my favourite day of the week as Val was the most lovely person I had met she was in her early 60’s and had been at the hotel for a very long time and this day me and Val was in the Linen room and our job for the day was to collect dirty washing from the shoot, seperate them and put them into different baskets. I was then trusted with my very own room key and Val and I went delivering guests laundry and then bath robes. I really enjoyed this because I was allowed to see all the different kinds of bedrooms in the hotel and I got to see the suites which were beautifiul with some really good views of Manchester. When doing house keeping you are allowed 3 breaks and you also have a 10 minute training session every morning and this is to give an over view of the day so you know what is going on in the hotel. Majority of the house keeping staff where not English but i was able to have conversations with them but they was all very nice women and had a really fin two days with them. Wednesday 14th i was in events this day was very tiring and i didnt enjoy it really i felt like i was just being given jobs so other people didnt want to do such as refiling teas and coffees when conferences where on and i was on my own for most of the day my supervisor kept wondering off so i was walking round not knowing what to do, however i made the most of it and still tried my best and did everything which i was was told to do. At the end of the day David who is the manager of events came to see me and asked to stay in events for the rest of the week as he thinks that i did really well on my first day of events, he also said i would be working with Shannon so i said yes i would do events. Thursday 15th was a very busy day as there was a lot of meetings and conferences on myself and Shannon kept busy throughout the day and stuck to the jobs we was given this day was very tiring because it was busy however i did enjoy and was happy that i was involved in the big conference of 100 people of from huge companys. Last day Firday 16th today was my favourite day when doing events as i was involved in help set up the ball room for an indian themed party which was happening Friday night it was so fun to help set out the room was quite busy as a lot of people was rushing around getting things done, a lady who desinged it all was there and she was helping set up the room, the room looked really nice i was quite sad how i didnt get to see the final finished room but i know it would of looked really nice, this day we was allowed to leave early myself and Shannon got David a card to say thankyou for everything he did, David also told us to apply on line for a part time job as he thinks we did really well this week however i did enjoy myself i am still interested in the hotel industry but i do not think events is the right department for me or maybe just at that hotel.

Brooke's Work Experience at The Marriott

Monday the 12th of May, all students from Bolton Sixthform Level 3 Travel and Tourism all went to a placement where they could do their work experience. My chosen place was The Marriot Victorica&Albert Hotel. When I arrived I got greeted by concierge and I asked for Barbra Cohen (HR Manger). Barbra came to front desk where I greeted her. After this Babs showed me around The Marriott Hotel and all its lovely conventions, such as the bar/restaurant, 9 conference rooms, and other area's of the hotel. I got introduced to the sales team at the V&A. When I said hello to everyone, I started to pack letter with all the Christmas brochures, 500 I packed!! I felt that personally I have learned to listen to members of staff therefore I know the task I had to complete within that day. On the second day I was still working in sales which I was really happy about because it was so interesting. I went to a 10@10 meeting with Becky-Senior Events Manger this was hosted in the reception area. This meeting was a 10 minute brief explaining what task they had to reach today, improvements for the hotel, customer feedback, how many rooms sold for tonight's guest. I really enjoyed working in the sales department and this was only day 2!! I feel that by working in the sales team I understand how the hotel runs (Sales, behind the scenes). I feel that by working in sales it has open different job opportunities for in the future. I would still like to be an air hostess for maybe a year or 8 months to gain experience, and the adventure of traveling! I was so fortunate to do this work experience! Such a great place to work as the staff are so friendly yet hard working.

Work Experience Leanne Jones

Last week from the 12th May till the 16th May I did work placement at Holiday Inn in Bolton that were part of one of the units that needed to be completed. Whilst I was there I had to fill in a log book and gather knowledge about the organisation. Also, I had to fill it in everyday to say what I had done and what skills I had developed whilst I was there for example, the skills I have developed is teamwork as well as working independently, communication skills and it has also built my confidence speaking new people. I learnt how to set up table for breakfast and lunch time, I learnt to set up tables for different events for example, birthdays and business dinners. I learnt how to set up conference rooms for business meetings and set up rooms for parties. I had to serve guests drinks, take orders and serve them food. Also, I learnt how to take payments and use the till. I had to make sure the area was clean all the time and do room checks to collect any trays, cutlery, glasses or cups to take to get cleaned and take any glasses to the bar. I have also learnt how to fold napkins for the tables and for the trays for room service. Whilst on work placement I got three witness statements filled in off different people to get some feedback so I know what I did good and how I could improve. Also, I had to evaluate myself and fill in the log book about what my strengths and weaknesses were and if I had met my objectives that I set before I did my work placement. In the future I would like to learn more areas as this would help me if I got a career in the industry.
