It had been a week since M.M. Land, and you had neither the guts nor the courage to face whatever went down. You always had the habit of avoiding situations where you found yourself incapable of arguing yourself out, or you had to confront problems, like the one you're in. Even though your mom told you everything about faith, chance, time, etc. You had a hard time living up to her words.
She saw you every morning leaving early for school, avoiding letting Takeo walk you to your school since it would mean that Sunakawa would also be walking along with you.
So, you'd wake up an hour earlier than usual, and by that time nobody would even be awake. This change of habit really messed up your sleep schedule. You already had trouble sleeping, but now you got less sleep and were constantly anxious.
You'd leave so early, that by the third day of doing this, you had found a nice scenic route to fill the hour-long gap between morning recess and first period. The school you went to was different from your brother's; it was the school you begged your mom to transfer you to ever since your last year of middle school. You desperately wanted to be at a different school than your brother's. Middle school was not a fun memory.
High school wasn't much better, but you had friends; none of them were as close as you would've liked, but it was a nice group. It was your group of friends.
These past few days you even found yourself spending more time with them; usually you'd go home and decline all their attempts to get you to go out with them. But you've found yourself avoiding home, just avoiding problems. So, you agreed to whatever shenanigans they suggested.
"Let's go to a mixer!!"
You looked at Aiko with a deadpan face. "What..."
"Don't look at me like that, Y/N!! I know you're gonna love it! It's with four extremely handsome boys, one of my friends set us up, and she has amazing taste in boys!! Perfect for us three!!" She exclaimed, looking at you and towards Hina, searching for nods of approval.
"I don't kn-" You began but were cut off by Hina's loud shouts.
"I say we go!!" Hina exclaimed with the same enthusiasm, "I need a boyfriend so very desperately, I can't end the year without one..." She cried.
"Hina, you just broke off with your ex. I don't think you should be so desperate to move on so quickly."
"That's exactly it, Y/N. I just ended a tragic, heartbreaking relationship, so I have to move!! I can't linger on forever, can I?"
"Right, bu-" You began but got cut off again.
"Exactly, plus I think it's great for you, you've never been in a relationship have you, Y/N? Why's that?" Hina said, looking at you with a grinning smile.
"No, I haven't, that's because... It's because of, um..." You started but trailed off mid-sentence.
"It's because Y/N already has someone in mind~" Aiko giggled. "I bet you it's that guy that's friends with her brother."
"What?! No. I don't know where you got that idea from. I haven't said anything of that sort about him," You denied firmly. "There, um... just haven't been any opportunities. That's why..."
"Liar. You get, like, a love confession basically every day." Aiko teased, poking you on the shoulder.
"Don't exaggerate, it's only been like five... Anyway, that's not the point. I think I might have to pass on this one, sorry guys."
"Aw, we had such a good streak going too... you never hung out with us after school in, like, a looooong time. Thought for a while you were possessed by an alien or something," Hina joked.
"It's ok, Hina, we'll get her next time." Aiko fake sobbed, gently tapping Hina on the shoulder.
"You guys are so dramatic." You laughed at their antics. "I'll come next time, I promise. Just maybe not if it's a mixer..."
"It's ok, Y/N, we won't push you, I'll definitely come up with a great activity for us to do!!" Aiko exclaimed, hyping Hina up along with her.
"Yeah, we'll definitely come up with something you'll love!!"
"Thanks, guys, I appreciate it." You smiled at them.
You walked home alone, strolling down the riverbanks, and you enjoyed the views of the falling leaves. Autumn was slowly arriving.
You felt a cold shiver run down your spine as the cool and freezing breeze hit your half-asleep walking corpse. It was the end of the week of this change of schedule, and your body was taking a huge hit, you were basically sleepwalking yourself home.
When going home, you'd take the normal route home, the shorter one, since your brother finishes later than you do, you'd get home before he did. This road you knew by heart, so even when your eyes would give up here and there, your feet would know the way and continue the walk on their own.
Or so you thought. Eventually you felt the extreme exhaustion catch up to you like an avalanche. Your body couldn't take it anymore.
You managed to rest yourself by setting your back against a concrete wall. Slowly falling down to your knees, you just needed a couple of seconds to rest your eyes.
Or maybe a couple of minutes...
"I'm home!!" Takeo shouted, coming back from hanging out with Yamato, as he entered the doorway, taking off his shoes.
"Welcome home," Your mom replied, walking up to him worriedly. "Have you seen Y/N? It's almost dinner time, and she still hasn't come home yet."
"Huh?" Takeo scratched his head. "Maybe she's with her friends, she's been spending more time with them lately."
"I assumed so, but usually Y/N would call me beforehand and let me know... She's very responsible that girl, she would never go somewhere without letting me know..." Your mom worried, her calm demeanour starting to fade into slight panic.
"Don't worry, mom," Takeo reassured, putting his hand on his mom's shoulder. "I'll go find her," giving her a quick thumbs up before he hurriedly put back on his shoes and headed out again.
He immediately ran to Sunakawa's house, barging into his room like he always did.
"We just saw each other, what's wro-"
"Y/N's missing!!" Takeo yelled, grabbing Sunakawa by the shoulders and shaking him violently back and forth. "Sunakawa!! What do I do!?"
"Calm down," He reassured, freeing himself from the superhuman grip that swung him around. "Explain to me the situation first."
Takeo explained whatever he could remember from what your mom told him.
"I see," Sunakawa thought out loud. "You should try calling her again and maybe get in contact with her friends."
Takeo nodded. "Ok, I'll call... um, Aisha and Hana..?"
"Aiko and Hina," Sunakawa corrected him. "But I doubt you have their contact info, so you should ask Yamato, she knows a lot of people. She must know them or know someone who knows them."
Sunakawa got up from his desk chair and walked towards the door.
"Where are you going, Suna?"
"I'll go look around outside, she might be near the house." Suna sighed, "Or at least I hope she is..."
"Takeo!! Come here!! You have to come be the baby, or else I'm not letting you play house with me!!" You huffed angrily, chasing him around your room with a pacifier.
"But Y/N, I don't wanna be the baby!! I wanna be the dog." Takeo whined, "You don't even have a dad, how can you have a baby."
"Yes, there is!!" You exclaimed, putting besides you a giant teddy bear, "Mr. Button is the daddy, and I'm the mommy."
"Ew, you can't marry a bear. That's disguting!!" Takeo mocked you.
"Shut it!! I can marry whoever I want!!"
You two start bickering until suddenly the doorbell rang, resonating around the house. You both rushed out of your room and peaked over the doorway to see who it was.
"Oh, well if it isn't little Makoto," Your mom exclaimed, "Chiaki, what a surprise to see you today!"
"Sorry to bother you, Yuriko. But Makoto here was wondering if he could come play with Y/N and Takeo" She smiled at Yuriko, but her sight landed on you and Takeo hiding behind the doorway.
"Of course, he ca-"
"Suna!!" Takeo yelled, running towards him. "Come on!! Let's go play together!!"
He pulled his arm and dragged him into your room.
"That little rascal," Yuriko sighed, "Why don't you come in for a bit, Chiaki. Let me make us some tea."
"There!! Now that's a real husband!!" Takeo snorted, having put on the top hat that belonged to Mr. Button onto Suna's head.
Sunakawa sat at the small table where little plastic set of teacups were set out. He sat silently as you and Takeo surrounded him from both the left and from the right, bickering on about the roles you were gonna take in playing house.
You eventually agreed that Takeo would take the role as the dog until you and Sunakawa officially got married, after then he would agree to play the baby.
"Woof!" Takeo barked, crawling around on four legs and pretending to be a dog.
You were preparing yourself in front of your small mirror, pretending to put on makeup.
"Here, Suna. I think you need a little bit of blush." You turn towards him, dusting him with a little bit of fake blush with a painting brush.
You giggled, seeing the brush tickle his nose. "Y/N, stop. It tickles."
"Woof! When are you guys done? I've been waiting for like, forever!! Woof!" Takeo complained, getting up and sitting on a chair at the table.
"Dogs don't talk, and they don't sit either." You snarked, "We're almost done, so be patient."
"Fine, then i'm going to grab a snack while I wait."
Takeo headed out of the room. You turn to Suna and scan him from top to bottom.
"What's wrong, Y/N?" Suna asked, as he felt an unnerving feeling seeing your devilish smile.
"I think we need to play dress-up." You walked closer to him, rubbing your hands together like an evil maniac."Hold still, this won't hurt a bit...."
"We're done!!" You yelled out to Takeo
He immediately ran back with a cookie in his hands.
"Wow, you guys look like mom and dad." Takeo awed, referencing to the wedding photo of your mom and dad.
"I know." You said confidently, proud of how you found a white dress for yourself and a suit for Suna. The suit was previously Takeo's, but he had grown out of it years ago.
"Y/N... Don't you think it's a little too much..." Suna hesitated, looking at himself in the mirror.
"There's no such thing as too much," You beamed, dragging him along with Takeo to the living room.
While you and Suna were getting ready, you had ordered Takeo to place all of your stuffed animals on the couch, since the living room was where the ceremony was gonna be held.
"Oh my!" Suna's mom exclaimed, surprised at the sight. "Well, isn't this the cutest!"
"Let me go get my camera, you two don't move." Your mom said, rushing towards her room to get the camera.
You smiled at yourself, loving the attention of the adults. You looked back at Suna to see his face red as a tomato.
"You look like a tomato." You giggled, taking notice of his croaked bow tie. "There!" You fixed it and at that moment a flash of light came behind you. Your mom had taken a picture of the adorable moment.
"This is so cute!" Yuriko exclaimed joyfully.
"Mom! Stop taking photos!" You ordered, "Go sit down over there"
You pointed to the couch, and your mom and Chiaki sat down obediently.
You and Suna stood in front of the television, as Takeo, who's taken the role as officiator since being a dog was useless at that point, stood between you.
He started his speech which he based himself off of some TV series you watched together, but he forgot most of the words, so his speech didn't really make sense. But he knew the most important part,
"You may now kiss the bride!!!"
Suna's face was flushed red; he could barely look up at you.
You giggled to yourself, as you leaned closer towards him.
"Mwah~"
You gave him a big kiss on the cheek, and the whole room applauded as the moms laughed and smiled at Suna's embarrassment.
You smiled gleefully and loudly at Suna, who only answered back with a shy smile.
Later that night, your mom showed the photos and videos to your dad. He was heartbroken he wasn't able to be there.
"My little Y/N, six-year-old and already married. I'm so proud." He cried, sobbing at the video.
"Don't worry Daddy. I'll get married a lot, so you don't have to be sad for missing this one." You smiled innocently.
Your mom started laughing at what you said, as your dad got flustered with the thought of his daughter getting married multiple times.
"Wake up, Y/N!! You gotta wake up!!"
A panicked voice shook you awake.
'They seemed worried.' You thought, 'I wonder who they're talking to...'
Your mind was blurry; you were very cold. You could barely process what was going on, where you were, who was talking to you and what time it was.
"Y/N, you can't stay like this. You'll freeze to death."
"C..calm... your voice is very calmin..g..." You slurred out you wods, finally opening your eyes. "S...s..una?"
"Yes, it's me." He reassured you, wrapping you around with his coat.
"NO!" You pushed him off, "I-I'm s'posed t'be avoidin' you, y'can't see me..."
You took his coat and hid your head inside thinking that it would make him disappear.
You peaked over the coat and saw him stand up, "You're leavin'..." you mumbled under your breath, your head very foggy and heavy you could barely look up at him.
"Don't be stupid." Suna said, "You're so stupid."
He let out a loud sigh, leaning down. He slipped one arm beneath your knees and the other one around your back. He lifted you up with ease.
You let out a startled breath when he picked you suddenly, but your body settled easily against his chest.
"Next time answer your phone." He scolded.
Holding you in a bridal carry, you curled instinctively towards him, burying your face in his chest. "It died, I'm s'rry..."
Your fingers gripped him tightly around the shoulders, warm tears rolled down your face and onto his shirt. "Didn't mean t'... make you worry."
He looked down at you, feeling the warm tears that landed on his shirt turning into cold patches when the wind stuck a little too hard. He didn't say anything. He never really had the words for you. He never had the right words for you.
"Suna..." You started, but by that point, you had no control of the words that came out of your mouth. Your body was on autopilot, while you yourself was slowly drifting back into slumber.
"D'you... still like me?" You slurred the words out, "You said... liked me. Th-that's why you stopped talkin' to me."
He was caught off guard with your question. He stopped walking and stood in the middle of the road, looking out into the distant as he thought about what to answer.
Even with your mind only half awake, you could tell he was hesitating. "Y'don't like me. Ight'?"
You rephrased your words in a way that no matter what he answered, he wouldn't hurt you. As if, if he denied liking you, you could pretend to have expected it and asked in a way that you wanted reassurance that he didn't like you. As if you didn't like him as well... And if he didn't deny it... that would mean...
"No, not in that way." He firmly denied.
"Oh..." Your voice trembled, "That's.. good..."
You closed your eyes, in a way that you felt a sense of closure to how you were feeling. You buried you face deeper into his chest, masking the pain that was painted all over it.
For a moment, the world shrank to the warmth of his arms and the slow sway of his steps, and it hurt all the more because it meant nothing.
Absolutely nothing.
