TAYLOR SWIFT The making of "Opalite"
My favorite part about writing is that first spark of an idea. It can happen at any time, for any reason. The idea for the Opalite music video crash landed into my imagination when I was doing promo for The Life of a Showgirl. I was a guest on one of my favorite shows, The Graham Norton Show. For those of you who aren’t familiar, it’s a UK late night show where Graham Norton (the insanely charismatic and lovable host) invites a random group of actors, entertainers, musicians, etc to be on his show and we all sit there and chat like it’s a dinner party. They even serve wine. Anyway. I remember thinking I got ridiculously lucky with the group I was paired with. Cillian Murphy, Domhnall Gleeson, Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Lewis Capaldi. All people whose work I’ve admired from afar. When we were all talking during the broadcast, Domhnall made a light hearted joke about wanting to be in one of my music videos. He’s Irish! He was joking! Except that in that moment during the interview, I was instantly struck with an *idea*. And so a week later he received an email script I’d written for the Opalite video, where he was playing the starring role. I had this thought that it would be wild if all of our fellow guests on the Graham Norton show that night, including Graham himself, could be a part of it too. Like a school group project but for adults and it isn’t mandatory. To my delight, everyone from the show made the effort to time travel back to the 90’s with us and help with this video. You might even recognize some friendly faces from The Eras Tour. I got to work with one of my favorite people in the world, Rodrigo Prieto, again! I had more fun than I ever imagined - Made new friends, metaphors, and fashion choices. It was an absolute thrill to create this story and these characters. Shot on film. The Opalite video is out now on Spotify & Apple Music.

the most striking thing to me about taylor right now is that we (as fans) spent so long thinking that her mental health was damaged irreparably from the events of 2016 when in reality it WAS repairable. and I think many of us AND taylor thought that the old taylor was dead forever!!! but that’s not true!!! and it really all comes down to to what travis said about two years ago - she loves life. she really really fucking loves life and joy and happiness and light. and i can’t believe everyone (her and us!!) lost sight of that. we’ve talked about this extensively in our tumblr community but holy shit, I didn’t realize how possible it was to see Fearless Taylor again - that girl who was just so in awe that her life involved creating music and playing her songs in stadiums filled with fans. the girl in the eras tour doc? I’ve seen her before - in Journey to Fearless.
We tell the world to leave us the fuck alone, and they do, wow
“I gotta go with one that’s near and dear to my heart. Tay Tay, congratulations, you get my stamp of the week. That’s right honey, you get it. She’s having a world record release of The Life Of A Showgirl. Couldn’t be more proud of her, most vinyl copies sold in one week in the US, with 1.2 million, and then on top of that, it sold 2.7 million copies in just 24 hours. The Fate Of Ophelia was the most streamed song in a single day in Spotify history, just on Friday. So stamp of the week goes to Tay Tay. So proud of you, girl.”

Tonight all these lives converge here The mosaics of laughter and cocktails of tears Where fraternal souls sing identical things And it’s beautiful It’s rapturous. It is frightening. ____

Writing, rehearsing, directing and shooting the music video for “The Fate of Ophelia” was the thrill of a lifetime because I got to be reunited with my Eras Tour family!! I wanted each one-take scene to feel like a live performance and remind us all of how it felt to be at those shows together. Making every moment count. It’s a journey through the chaotic world of show business. I loved working with Rodrigo Prieto, Ethan Tobman and Mandy Moore to dream up these visuals. A huge thank you to this massive cast who kept it 💯 and also kept the secret of this video even existing. It’s out on YouTube NOW!

The Life of a Showgirl is such a smart title because it lends itself to both diaristic and fictional storytelling so easily right off the bat and of course knowing Taylor she’ll do a mix of the two (a la ttpd, folkmore) which as she’s said is both protective and freeing
Also it would make a great documentary title hehe 😜
