a muse study of evan buckley 's birthdays by maeve
( idk and idc if canon has somehow proved this wrong )
evan buckley was open about a lot of things – growing up he was the kid who brought the quiet ones out of their shell , the one who could befriend whoever sits next to him , much to the chagrin of his teachers who got sick of hearing his not-so quiet voice . the point is , he is an open book .
or well , an open first chapter , only when you dig deeper do you realise that those first few pages were a red herring . whenever he is asked about his birthday , he gives a different day ; one day he is born on august third , and the next he is born on february nineteenth .
long story short , buck hates his birthdays . it wasn 't entirely by choice , but how could he like his birthday when for the whole month of june , the air becomes thick and he can 't even mention getting one year older without being glared at by his father , or witnessing a tear coming out of his mother 's eyes .
he never really celebrated his birthday , maddie tried for the first few years , but he could tell even she wasn 't in the mood for it , so he said that he wanted to celebrate with friends . his birthdays were spent alone , lying to his sister about the cake he ate and the fun he had . birthdays were overrated .
when he got into his later teens , he would use his birthday as an excuse to go out and find someone for the night . it was better than spending it alone , and it was a nice birthday activity for himself .
he couldn 't break his lying streak about his birthday , so of course when hen asked him he answered with september twentieth , and when chimney asked he answered with november twelveth . the lie didn 't last long , for once people wanted to celebrate properly , which caused confusion .
he came clean , saying he just didn 't like his birthday and it was dropped like that , no questions . he noticed how bobby would give him his favourite jobs during shift , and make his favourite food . he noticed how hen just so happened to be doing a coffee run that morning , and noticed how chimney was bored and wanted to go out for food after food .
not a celebration , but not leaving him alone .
it was nice . when maddie came they still didn 't celebrate , it was one of the constant things they refused to acknowledge , but she will still invite him out for a sibling night in on the weekend after . he never got a text from his parents , he didn 't expect to anyway .
when he found out about daniel , it made sense . daniel 's death anniversary will always be more important than buck being alive to celebrate his own birthday . he wish he could feel bitter about that fact , but he felt so disconnected from his birthday that he felt like it would be wrong to be angry about it – everything else , of course , but his birthday ? nope .
he celebrated his first birthday with the diaz . it wasn 't purposeful , but they went to the zoo , and when they checked buck 's id for his birthday , they upgraded them to their birthday tour . he wanted to refuse , but it was a free upgrade , and christopher looked up at him all excited , so he nodded , even if it didn 't sit right with him .
now that christopher knew , he made sure they got ice cream on their way home . he ran into his bedroom and made a card as well . buck isn 't ashamed to admit that he cried , not that he could hide it . his face was still red and puffy when christopher asked for a group photo .
the next year , chris wanted to host a surprise party for him . eddie warned him , said that he could pull the big guns and just say no , but last year , as weird as it felt , was nice . he didn 't spend the next day disappointed that nothing has changed . he agreed , and has the most overwhelmingly good day .
his second birthday , his first birthday party .
june doesn 't way so heavy on him anymore . he still doesn 't get any text message from his parents , but when he is surrounded by his family , he isn 't even thinking of checking his phone .
