Battle of the Beans: Arabica Coffee vs. Robusta Coffee
Out of the two dozen different types of coffee plants, there are two main varieties that collectively are used to produce over ninety percent of the world’s drinking coffee. In the USA and many other countries across the world, most coffee will either come from Arabica coffee beans or Robusta coffee beans. If you order a cup of coffee in a restaurant or buy beans form a supermarket you might not get much of a say as to whether you have Arabica beans or Robusta beans. But does it really matter? At Buffalo Bucks Coffee House we think the answer is yes.
There are some big differences between Arabica coffee beans and Robusta coffee beans which completely change that coffee’s composition. At Buffalo Bucks Coffee House we only use top grade gourmet Arabica beans. All our coffee beans come from organically grown Arabica trees that are grown to the highest standards for optimum taste and quality. You might be wondering why we care so much about our coffee beans, and why we only use gourmet Arabica beans, so here are some of the main differences between Robusta and Arabica coffee beans.
Taste
Arabica coffee beans offer much more variety in flavor than Robusta coffee beans. Arabica beans can range in taste from soft and rich to sharp and sweet. When roasted the aroma is more aromatic, sweeter and richer than other coffees.
Robusta coffee beans taste range is much more limited and generally taste much sharper and stronger than Arabica beans. Robusta coffee is often used for instant coffee and usually has a oatmeal or burnt nut taste. The use of robusta beans could be why your coffee is bitter.
Growth
Arabic coffee beans grow mostly in sub-tropical and high-altitude climates. They are a much more delicate plant than other coffee bean plants and require a more specialized production method.
Robusta coffee plants are much stronger and grow in a large number of climates across the world. Because they are much easier to grow, Robusta coffee beans have a greater variation in their production process.
Usage
Arabica coffee beans make up around seventy percent of all coffee consumed in the USA. It is mostly used by high quality and European brand coffee, and as such is often the preferred bean of restaurants and high quality coffee houses.
Robusta coffee beans are generally used as strong and instant coffee blends. Robusta coffee beans also contain twice as much caffeine as Arabica beans which makes them a popular choice for high caffeine instant coffee.
It is also worth remembering, however, that not all Arabica beans are produced and harvest equally. To yield the best quality cup of coffee Arabic coffee beans must be harvested and roasted in a particular way. Which is why Buffalo Bucks Coffee House only use 100% organic gourmet Arabic coffee beans, and roast them to exact specifications for the best possible cup of coffee you can have.
