I still am a die-hard truther that Simon's favorite color is orange, and I heavily associate him with that color.

I HC that green is something that brings him conflicting feelings. Green is inherently tied to his religion, subconsciously, as it represents the Grove; the only place he could visit throughout his life that naturally held that color. I think green would make him think of Eden, not Earth, and we obviously know that's complicated. Because Eden isn't home to Simon. He renounced them however long ago.

I mean, we know they dressed Simon in green specifically as a callback to his Eden roots (pun intended) in order to serve as a visual marker for the character's past on-screen. I paraphrase Erika Slay's style guide here.

Mars is home. He is the #1 Mars Yearner. He thinks about orange on the horizon to self-soothe. It reminds him of his childhood, of mom, better times, etc. Orange reaches further into that man's soul than green does.

Anyway, I'm saying all this because I got tipsy and started ruminating about how Simon would LOVE carnelian as a gift, and then got sad because he'd be holding it up in porthole windows and imagining a red dot in the distant void... and ugh. Man.

I’m a firm believer that the “home” Simon was referring to throughout the movie that he wanted to return to wasn’t Eden, but Mars. He said it himself, he didn’t choose Eden or the COI, it was just the circumstances that forced him there. And I find that so heartbreaking. This is a man who has nothing, absolutely nothing, and the only place he ever gave any ounce of comfort has vanished forever. Even if he did survive, Eden would never take him back, the COI would never truly accept him for his crimes. He would only ever be free in death, but there’s no peace for the dead in the blood ocean.

The radiation scene and its aftermath were incredible. Going from "You should've told me!" to apologizing. Apologizing even though he couldn't have known. Apologizing despite knowing that his words probably mean nothing to them, because they don't see him as a human being. How the guilt stays on his mind for the entire movie, despite being in hell himself. He brings it up, again and again. He didn't mean to sentence someone to death. Even if they're the people who are doing the same thing to him. A mirror of a mistake he made in his past..? The submarine on the ocean floor is referenced in the button, with the chain breaking above it being the sub's chain, but also the DNA strands that break under radioactive rays. The core of what makes us human, unraveling at the bottom of the blood ocean, and the light is so bright, so bright...it calls...

Saw Iron Lung yesterday, and I haven’t seen anybody talk about my favorite line in the movie yet.

After his first encounter with the eel, with the speaker box, Ava contacts him again. And he goes to tears, screaming at her “You’re not there! You’re broken! I’m broken!”

And that one line set the tone for the whole rest of the movie for me. He thinks he’s broken. He apologizes for everything, constantly, over and over. That man is an abused dog trying to satisfy his master even though he knows it will never be enough.

I think one of the cruelest things that happened to Simon (other than literally Everything Else) was the fact that he was brought back up out of the ocean and for a brief moment his final glimpse at humanity was nothing but a bloody porthole leading into a small room of people who called him nothing but a convict because nobody cared enough to learn his name. Something about the sliver of hope that he’ll be let out of his metal coffin is haunting to me.

iron lung is good because on one hand it's like "hey if there was an ocean of blood and we threw a guy down there would that be fucked up or what" but also it's about humanity and the want to survive and the need to survive and what is worth the cost of a life but it's also about the inhuman treatment of criminals and where we draw the line but it's also about simon saying "it's bigger than me" during his self sacrificial act for humanity it's also about "you deserve your freedom. i'm sorry i can't give you that." it's about oh my god i love cosmic horror it's about seeing such an incredibly beautiful and artistic and human and independent film prevail it's about everything and it's about what you are when you're left at the edge of nothing. so yeah the movie is ok

im also obsessed with the interpretation of the blood ocean not being inherently evil or malevolent, in fact, it starts off rather loving. or at least, what it perceives to be loving. it wants simon to become part of it. it could've absorbed the iron lung and mutated it so long ago - we saw how quickly things went to shit in the final act. but its slow, always there in the corner for simon to be constantly aware of it, like a friend letting you know theyre always in your corner. it keeps the oxygen supply going despite the fact it should've run out days ago. it throws him into the cave. it talks to him, tries to entice him to join in anyway it can. come see the truth, it could save you, it has the answers you've been looking for. if that doesn't work, maybe guilt tripping is the answer, reflect on filament station, simon. "i see you". an acknowledgement. simon runs out of tape so the blood mutates to hold the photograph button for him. but the more defiant simon becomes, the more focused on his own survival he is, the angrier the ocean becomes. the creature couldve swallowed him so many times. clearly the radiation isn't actually a threat to it, we see it being blasted so many times in the end, but it continues its chase after him once it kills ava. the creature backing off in the caves after the photograph was a conscious decision. it couldve lashed out right then and there, but it backed off. "hey, im not a threat, im just watching, im right here for when you're ready".

just like eden, just like the COI, the ocean tries to force simon into a life he never really wanted. because he never seems to get a choice.

i just can't stop thinking about an ocean that thinks itself benevolent, when really, its just as cruel as the rest of humanity. or maybe, its humanity that is as cruel as nature. or is it a God? does it even matter?

I can't get over how human Simon was. He apologised for his outbursts, even when punching the sub at one point, he repeatedly apologised for the radiation in the exact same way like he was still reeling from the shock of that information. Whenever the oxygen ticked down you can see a new wave of horror washing over him that he needs to take a second to cope with. When Ava gives him the login details he stumbles on remembering control-shift-9 never mind the password she rattled out.

They managed to present a man with a dark past and anger issues who is also not a monster. He is a human being desperate to survive and nobody even knows his name anymore. The closest thing he had to a family he resents but still obviously misses terribly as he clings to that pendant and shakes.

And Ava. Ava too. She's in an impossible situation. She doesn't want more humans to die. She has no idea how much damage radiation has done to her. This man, who she thought was a heartless killer, is begging and pleading and apologising like a child and it's getting increasingly harder to lie to him that he's going to be ok. Her screaming and begging that this is bigger than him is so achingly desperate I can still feel it, humanity is almost entirely gone. I fully believe that she hates this as well, all of it, but if she doesn't follow orders and take calculated risks then what else is there to keep her tethered and sane? What else can she cling to? They're almost entirely alone in an empty universe. She needs this hope.

Simon "the butcher" who keeps apologizing for not knowing better, for causing harm to the people in the room, for being rightfully angry and lashing out, turning every knob and lever and pressing that damn button because why would it work when he doesn't have any power and why didn't they just Tell Him??

Simon "the butcher" who gets teary and has the look of a hurt child on his face when ava mentions filament station and his voice trembles when he is quick to say "that wasn't supposed to happen"...

Simon "the butcher" who apologizes to the sm-13, an inanimate object, after hitting the console.

Just... Simon being so unbeliebably human throughout the whole movie, it makes my heart ache for him

Like if you do the maths backwards he was there for FIVE YEARS. And he was the ONLY SCIENTIST to make it out alive!!! I wanna know what his day to day life trapped in those labs looked like!! How many of those years were spent completely alone and isolated from anyone else??? I wanna know if he had to watch his friends and coworkers all die one by one or if some of them volunteered to be tested on and now Luis has to live with that guilt on his conscious too. I wanna know if he ever tried to escape or if there was just genuinely no way out. I wanna know if working with Las Plagas on his own all day every day drove him mad or if he just dissociated from it all. I wanna know how he felt and if he ever broke down and cried. Washington Post is paywalling the article but it looks like Taylor Farms — a consumer bagged salad brand that also supplies produce to grocers and fast food chains like Taco Bell, Walmart, McDonald's, Chipotle, Burger King, KFC, and Meijer —may be at least one of the sources of the current cyclosporiasis outbreak.

Taylor makes bagged greens, salad kits, chopped salads, the works. Keep avoiding supermarket greens, but keep an especially close eye out for this brand/supplier. The above list of grocers and fast food chains is NOT exhaustive, so please continue getting lettuce and other raw produce taken off your burgers, sandwiches, etc.

Taco Bell pulled the lettuce from their supplies first, before any of the other restaurants and stores dealt with it. I don’t know what other brands are doing.

Taylor Farms has had incidents in the past. These issues were dealt with faster the first time around.

A lot of the problem comes from Trump’s deregulation of food safety.

Avoid Taylor Farms. Continue practicing food safety practices whenever possible. Monitor yourself. And remember this outbreak.
