It was a great performance.

The New Museum

[I choose videos and because of some technical difficulties I can not post pictures]

I love The New Museum, the most compelling one was the video of a woman get raped inside a peek of hole on the wall. With all the music in the background and pictures view how a woman is being treated- as a sexual object in the past history. It really make me think a lot about how challenging it was, as a woman, who plays an important role of the society, but the society still treat woman unfairly. The sounds revealed women don’t have any power or it is limited. There is another video called “HOMO Video” which reveals fantasy of either gay or female liberation- they should both have equal rights among the rest of people who aren’t. I respect them as an artist, there is nothing wrong with that. Why do we judge base on gender? Don’t they have freedom to command their identity? The third piece is the mirror. {I think it is an art piece?] The glasses are divided into different pieces, different types of people’s proportion, but when we all stand in front of that mirror, we shared commonalities. DON’T MATTER IF WE ARE DIFFERENT BY THE WAY HOW OTHER VIEWS YOU OR YOU VIEW YOURSELF OR ANYTHING.

Artist Statement

My name is Emily Xie. I came from China, but I am an ABC( American Born Chinese.) I lived in New York, Manhattan. Art making is important to me because it represents my heritage, myself as a leader, and as an artist. I want to prove that I have the ability to support our community as an artist and oppose the Chinese society ‘ s expectations for me -they view Artist as an nonofficial career. Art making is a way to make me become educated too. It is my way of communicating with my audience when I am not good at academics. It is my freedom of speech, that make other people to listen to my voice individually. Every artist is a narrator, we may have different perspectives against a conflict or an issue, or any other topics, which make an artist better that we are part of the community. We are inspired by many different role models, and later we want others to view US as a role model.

I love all different types of art, I am still exploring. I don’t have much experience because I was limited by my education in the past, but I still looking forward to learn. For now I fall into the category of Visual Art. I love 3-D art, sculpture, printmaking..ceramics, artchetecture..and others like: watercolor, oilpastel, painting and drawing; all different types of them. I will like to explore more towards design, illustrion, graphi desigh, other than visual art.
