First they went after the immigrants Deporting them without due process And I did not speak out Because I was not an immigrant

Then they went after the gays Depriving them of the same rights straight people enjoy And I did not speak out Because I was not gay

Then they went after the unions Claiming their demands for safe work places, healthcare and living wages put our industries at a disadvantage And I did not speak out Because I did not belong to a union

Then they went after the homeless Making it illegal to not have a home And I did not speak out Because I was not homeless

Then they cut taxes for the rich And paid for it by cutting services the less fortunate depend upon Some spoke out but not me Because I did not need those services

Then they began deporting citizens Who they claimed were dangerous to the country More people spoke out but not me I was a good citizen

Then I was hurt on the job and could no longer work – I was poor I could no longer pay my mortgage – I was homeless I needed the services those less fortunate depend upon – they no longer exist Then I realized I was just like all the people I did not speak out for And now there was no one left To speak out for me
