NaNoWriMo

I signed up for NaNoWriMo this month. For anyone who is not familiar, it stands for National Novel Writing Month, which is in November. The goal is to motivate users to write 50,000 words within the month. I have mixed feelings about it.

I have never had an issue with word counts. I am of the mindset that you should not have a specific word count goal. Writing is about content, not word count. Anyways, my goal is not to reach any word count, but to instead find motivation to dedicate time within my day to write more often. All too often I find myself arriving home after work and reading articles, or surfing YouTube for an hour or two. If I could convert those couple of hours into writing, I could easily knock out a few chapters a week.

After joining the NaNoWriMo.org website and selecting my local region, I wanted to get to know the other writers that are local to my area. I should not have done this. As I sifted through the bios, I felt more and more isolated. I realized that I did not have one thing in common with any of the writers in my region. Each of them have ties to sci-fi, role playing, anime, and steampunk. I have no interest in any of that.

It looks like I will not be making many friends through NaNoWriMo. Oh well.

New Story

I've been working on the structure of a new story for quite some time. Last night I officially started the first chapter. I'm not sure if I want this project to go episodic or the novel route. I'll wait and see how fast the chapters come out.

Racist Scarecrow Balloon Making Guy

Last night at Applebee's there was a guy dressed up as the scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz who was making balloons for customers. During one point a balloon popped and it startled a few customers. When he made his rounds from table to table, asking if he could make anything for them, he stopped at the table next to us. "Good evening. I hope you're enjoying your meal. Is there anything that I could make for you?" He asked the middle aged black couple. The gentleman politely responded, "No thanks. We don't need to be startled anymore this evening." The scarecrow knew exactly what the man was referring to and quickly replied, "Oh the balloon pop. It must of sounded like gun shots to you." The look on my face was probably a dead giveaway but the gentleman also took offense to it and was fast to say, "Whoa...!" The scarecrow tried to correct the situation after he looked back and saw my face but also hearing the offense in the man's tone. "Oh my mean like, lightning, bang... Lightning." He quickly walked away from that table at that point. It's one of those moments that the scarecrow probably wish that he would have avoided our section.

Neighbor Fight

We all have bad neighbors. Above us we have a young couple, I would estimate to be in their late 20's. They are constantly fighting and the best part about this is listening in on their arguments. We hear best in our bathroom so there are times when we gather to listen to the latest drama. Tonight's drama is centered around the guy, which is the norm. He is more like a man-child, always complaining and arguing about everything. Tonight was especially entertaining as he was screaming and near tears when telling his girlfriend how unfair it was that Honey-BooBoo was cancelled. "It's not fair, they can't cancel that show, I had it set to record on the DVR. Now it's not going to record. What's it going to record? We're dropping Comcast! I don't get it, why would they cancel my show?" All the while we could hear the girlfriend try and calm him, "I know baby, it's going to be ok. We'll find another show to watch."

Captain Chaos - 5th Iteration

I really thought that I lost Captain Chaos. No matter where I work, Captain Chaos appears and there is a constant struggle and/or war between us.

In our recent move, I found a place of employment that I really love. The people are great, there are no games or drama and I enjoy getting up in the morning and heading off to work. I’ve been stress free and having a great time. That’s usually when it’s time for Captain Chaos to make an appearance.

I was introduced to her and the first few meetings were very productive. She was helpful and personable but then suddenly the mask came off and sitting right in front of me, in meeting where we were both presenting a project that we were working on, was Captain Chaos.

I totally did not see that coming. Chaos has always been a guy until this time when he disguised himself as a woman. I was so caught off guard that I didn’t even notice the bus backing over me the first few times and then suddenly I could feel the knife in back and that’s when I realized that this battle with Captain Chaos is going to be one of the most difficult ones.

I can't believe it! This company is messed up on so many levels. They announced that they are rehiring an ex-employee and giving him a huge promotion. This is the same guy who stole all of my work, claimed it as his own, received a raise and a promotion and then sat in the same meeting as me and told everyone that he created all of the algorithms and logic behind the stolen work. I was furious! And now he's coming back. WTF?!?! Glad I only have 2 weeks left.

I.T. Is a Joke!

I used to stick up for the I.T. Department but I can no longer do that. I have been complaining that my computer doesn't work and they refuse to do anything. Their solution: "restart your computer". You know what, I shouldn't have to restart my computer 3-5 times a day. How am I supposed to be productive when every other hour I have to shutdown?

Servers are down, again, at work. This is a weekly thing. I'm thankful for Clash of Clans, tumblr and Flipboard... They'll keep me entertained until they fix things here at work.

Two of us guys talking about female birth control Mgr: "Have you heard of the IED? They put it up inside their vagina." Me: "IED? Are you sure? I think that's a bomb." Mgr: "Yeah, it's like a Baby scrambler." Me: "No, I mean, IED is a roadside bomb or something like that." Mgr: "I don't think so. You're thinking of an IUD." Me: "I'm pretty sure IED is the bomb and IUD is the baby scrambler. We need a girl to ask." A supervisor walked by and the manager called him in. Mgr: "What is the baby scrambler that girls stick in their vagina? IED or IUD?" Supervisor: "I think IED is a bomb on the road." Me: "See, I knew it!" Mgr: "Well an IED would scramble things up just as well. No difference."

New Guy Hell

The new guy is still acting like the new guy, even though it's been almost two months now. This morning, I arrived to my desk and tried to set my bag down but was interrupted by him. As I'm trying to take my coat off, he's asking me all sorts of questions and blah, blah, blah. I just want to be able to start my day off in peace. I want to be able to put my lunch in the fridge, take my coat off, start my computer up and login, all without having to answer a million questions. Then later he comes back, sits on my desk and spills my oatmeal. He laughs as he says, "Oh sorry." Seriously, why am I stuck with this guy?
