Let’s start off with Dennis. Dennis has always gotten whatever he wants but not because he happens to be the crown prince of Ilyria but because it is physically impossible for others to not to follow his commands.
One of the first times his parents noticed something a bit odd was when Dennis was two years old. He got a little brother, Thomas. Dennis was allowed to hold Thomas on his lap when sitting on his parents’ bed. Thomas didn’t stop crying and Dennis freaked out and told him to be quiet. For the first time ever, Thomas actually stopped crying easily.
Dennis had couple accidents in his childhood. Once he shouted that everyone should leave him alone and no one recognized his existence in few days.
When he grew up with his brother, they used to play in the snow and have a snow fight. Thomas was even as a child was better in sports than Dennis, although Thomas was two years younger. Thomas used to dominate the snow fight until Dennis complained about how unfair it was. After Dennis’s complaint, Thomas was hardly able to hit Dennis anymore with his snow balls.
Around the age 12, even Dennis’s thoughts started controlling people. If he really, really wished something, it happened. Once Thomas and Dennis had a big fight and got mad at each other. Dennis wished that Thomas would stop bothering him. Thomas was ten at the time and that wish made him try to kill himself.
First Dennis did not realize his thoughts. When he saw Thomas almost jumping from his balcony, Dennis started to shout at him. He shouted that Thomas should not jump. Thomas still slipped and was hanging from the side of his balcony and someone had to come and help him up.
Dennis felt so guilty that he locked himself up in his room.
Thomas is the most important thing in the world for Dennis. Thomas was his best friend, his brother, and simply the most precious thing he ever had. When he realized what he had almost done, Dennis decided to never take the risk of repeating that day with Thomas.
Dennis locked himself up in his room and started to avoid coming out. No one could ever force him. If someone tried, Dennis just told them to go away and they did because they had to. His parents hung out with him a lot and kept him company. Dennis did not want to shut the out as well so he started to teach himself how to control his tongue and thoughts. It made him to always think about what to say and to choose his words carefully as well as it made him to keep his thoughts in control. He tries not to let his thoughts wander off.
When Dennis was 17, his father died of illness. Couple months later, Dennis officially became an adult, when he turned 18.
As all this is happening in the past, somewhere in the 19th century (1800s) and back then humans did not have the same thoughts of equality as we have now, Dennis’s mother could not be the ruler of her country. The power must go to the oldest son of the king. Dennis tried many times to ask why Thomas could not be crowned instead of him. Anyhow, he believes in own will and does not force his mother to change her mind.
Dennis’s mother organized the coronation on Dennis’s 18th birthday so that he would only have to appear one party, instead of two. His mother is hardly able to convince Dennis out of his room to his coronation ceremony. The pressure does not help Dennis with his bad self-confidence, always ongoing freaking out, or his nearly-nervous-breakdown. The way she got him out of his room is the fact that he would meet Thomas for the first time in, like, forever.
Just before the ceremony, while Dennis is going to the chapel where ceremony takes place, he literally crashes with a boy from a noble family. The boy gets mad and hisses to Dennis that he should watch where he is going, because he had just crushed into one of Prince Thomas’s closest personal friends. This leads to cliché “Don’t you know who I am?” “We’ll, don’t you know who I am?” situation. Dennis decides that it would be the best choice to leave before he says – or thinks – something stupid.
Ceremony goes past and Dennis arrives to the ball room, the main room for his party. Before him, there is a group of boys and Dennis recognizes none of them from their necks. The herald (the person, who announces people), announces that Prince Thomas of Ilyria has arrived with his accompanies, Sir James Rolfe, Sir Sebastian Rolfe, and Sir Anthony Ardley. When Dennis gets in, he goes straight away to the group of boys and starts off with saying just one word: “Brother.” Thomas does not even look at Dennis when he says “How can you call me your brother after all this time.” As Dennis looks at the group, he notices that also the Douchebag kid who he crashed with is in the group.
It is heart breaking for Dennis because after all, Dennis does care more about Thomas than anything else in this world. Although Thomas does remind his friends and Dennis, that he has not seen Dennis after “the incident”. Dennis has thought that they have met in couple parties where he actually came for few minutes but Thomas says that he had always already left the party when Dennis came and only heard the next morning that Dennis had been there.
Because Dennis has been hiding for years, he has lost all of his self-confidence and self-esteem. He hates himself and feels like the world would be a better place without him. He is afraid of his words. He is afraid of his mind and thoughts. He does not want to speak neither to think. He knows that all he did, he did for Thomas’s happiness and well-being. Still, his brother does not even accept the fact that they are brothers.
After that, Dennis tries to stop hiding. Technically, Dennis could be the King only as a face, when the Council could do all the decisions. But suddenly, Dennis does not want to hide anymore. He wants his brother to respect him again. He tries to achieve Thomas’s acceptance. He tries to be friends with Thomas’s friends, even though he really dislikes the douchebag boy, Anthony. He does like James and Sebastian, the mirror twins.
And this is the King Dennis of Ilyria.
