patrick that is so disgustingly in love with you, so absolutely gone, to the point his whole body just gives under the pressure of his adoration.
between many, endless things that demonstrate to you just how much his body just radiates with love, kissing is certainly one of them.
having the smug, usually careless, borderline sociopathic patrick jane just melt into you, desperately at that, just proves to you how much his love is true.
his heavy palms holding your skull, his tall frame curling into itself as he leans into you, leaning desperately, as if every little move you give means you'll pull away. knees giving in slightly, not dramatically, just a tremor in his bones as he tries to bend his body to fit around your own.
he holds you with fear, almost, kisses you randomly when you're not even ready to meet the intensity his lips present yours. the need for you just coming out of his pores with how tightly he holds you. how his hands grip your jaw a little when your surprised self doesn't immediately reciprocate his spontaneous assault of your lips.
he wants you to feel just as intensely for him, wants you to be just as tortured as he is, so the moment you melt into him, when your loving arms embrace him back, his ever-screaming thoughts dissapear into static. his brain leaking out of his ears as your own lips move languidly against his, and the pink muscle that is your tongue, plush and slick with spit, hidden until then, traces his bottom lip teasingly.
causing his own tongue to wrap around yours, a syrupy exchange of dna, lazy and full of need that you're too lazy to act upon. too lazy, when all the licking and slurping just cause you to lean further into him, hold him closer and make his heart grow so big in his chest he can hear his ribs crack.
when you whine softly in response to the heat starting to form between you, the one that trails all over your body and ends between your thighs; your sound of pleasure is met with an even needier sound from him.
maybe a mock, but definitely an affirmation of the arousal that makes you two rub against each other like cats. a sound that you love hearing leave him, because even though you know he's repeating what he hears from you, it doesn't make it any less real.
so now, dizzy and hot, those tragic eyes of his having their pupils all blown, he just looks at you in awe. breathing like a dog, more truthful than he had ever allowed himself to be, in a pleasure drowned murmur, he speaks.
"i love you..." he declares, serious, sobered up from the pleasure, grim in his seriousness, as if this is a life or death situation that's leaning more towards death and he desperately needs you to hear it.
confession, which gains a loud laugh from you, and a reciprocation of his words, that causes him to laugh too in confusion. tension slightly melting into something sweet and familiar as you two bicker over your visible amusement. as if his words weren't painfully obvious when you could feel him through his dress pants.
ik he's so chalant matter of fact he's the most chalant if i'm allowed to say that
Summary: you had been working with Patrick Jane for awhile at the CBI one night you stay late to talk about the case. One thing leads to another... The next morning your gone
Content: Patrick Jane x female reader / suggestive content/ making out in public/ hurt/comfort / kidnapping/ reader gets punched and stabbed:( / confessing fellings / if I forgot something please let me know
An : I am so excited to post this! This is my first time writing for Patrick Jane I just started watching The mentalist about a month ago I'm almost finished season 2 and this man has been on my mind non-stop. If you have any requests regarding this character please let me know but !!!!no spoilers please!!!
You sat on that leather couch with your feet on Jane's lap. The rest of the team had gone home. And Cho had just finished his paperwork. He told you both to get some sleep. Before he left the office.
Most of the lights were off. It was so quiet. You normally never stayed behind, but something about this case was different. You had something on the tip of your tongue but you couldn't quite get there yet you didn't have enough evidence.
âYou feel guilty.â you lift your head from the arm rest. Jane's eyes are closed. Like they've been for the last half hour.
âWhat?â He always does this. You don't know why you humour him every time. Maybe because you're soft on him. Many people think he's a pain in the ass when he somehow manages to read your mind and share it with everyone around. But you never minded it. You were a pretty open book anyways.
âYou feel guilty because you need more evidence. You feel guilty because you want more. And the only way to get more is for another girl to die. You don't want that but you need it, hence guilty.â He says with his eyes still closed.
You rolled your eyes and let your head fall back. Right again
âYou're rightâ you hear Jane hum. You sit up âI do feel guilty. We need more evidence. Obviously this guy's a cereal we just need him toâŚâ
âMake a mistake.â he finally opened his eyes
âRight. I just wish we knew where he was meeting them.â
âWell my guess is a bar, but which bar is too soon to tell. Both victims frequented at least 20.â
âWe don't have enough manpower to cover every bar in Sacramento.
âSo we wait.â he says as he closes his eyes again.
You kick your feet off his lap. Janesâ startled in the process. âI refuse to believe that's all we can do, isn't there another angle something else we can look for.â
He bends over to the table to grab his tea. You wondered if he wanted it earlier but didn't move because he didn't want to disturb you lying in his lap.
âNo, all we have is two body's, two girls that look similar.â He looked over at you, then back to his tea. âBut is to soon to see if its coincidenceâ
âYou don't believe in those.â
âThis is true but.â he let it hang in the air. âNothing nevermind.â he sets his tea down.l
âNo you can't do that.â You moved over to sit next to him. âYou can't just keep your theories to yourself.â he raised his eyebrows. âOkay i know thats what you do but come on cut me some slack. I stayed late because I.â I wanted to spend time with you "I wanted to talk more about the case. I know you have something in that head of yours.â
He's looking at you listening to you talk.
âIt's just us,â you move in closer. It's like you're trying to get him to tell you a secret that requires a hush tone, even in an empty room. âYou can tell me.â
He turns to meet your gaze, shifting in his seat. He lets out a sigh.
âWith the two girls looking the same there is absolutely a pattern, a type but what i dont get is the way he kills them. First one was suffocated, next one was shot, it's like he's trying to figure out what he wants to do with them. The fact that he always keeps them for a few days to do god knows what. Proves that he's a psychopath. I just.â
silence
âJust what?â you whispered
You didn't realise how close you two had gotten on the couch till now. You could smell the chamomile in his breath.
You stared at him. He was always looking at faces, always trying to read peoples thoughts and he was damn good at it. You didn't know if he knew what you were thinking. You didn't know if you wanted him to know, if you were being honest.
The real question is not if he knew. He knew what you were thinking, it was if he was going to let you.
You leaned in and he didn't back away. His eyes darted between your eyes and swiftly to your lips. He's not pulling away.
You move closer. Noses almost touching. His eyes are hooded and he hasn't pulled away. You take that as your sign.
You tilt your head slightly and close the distance. Your lips move against his.
His are still. You feel his exhale brush the top of your lip. You pull back slightly. Letting him make the next move. Your eyes were closed. You didn't feel the couch move beneath you so you know he hasn't pulled away.
You opened your eyes to find him staring at your lips. You're scared to move and don't want to scare him away.
âJane.â You couldn't help but call his name. âI-â
He leaned in this time his lips were moving against yours. It was quick and sloppy like he hadn't kissed in years.
His left arm raised to hold your face. He was dominating the kiss and you welcomed it. You met his lips with just as much passion he put in.
He leans in and lays you down on the sofa, holding himself over you, never breaking the kiss. You reach up and grab his face, sliding your fingers through his hair. He lets out a sigh. And his kiss falters a bit but he quickly regained his composure.
He moves his knee between your legs. Enough to feel the heat but not enough to get any serious pleasure from.
He takes his free hand and moves it along your body. Till it reaches your waist. The kiss had become steady and passionate now.
Your shirt must have untucked from your skirt because you feel his soft fingers sliding underneath. You pull on his hair again.
His whole hand is under your shirt now. His warm hands barely touch you. Like he didn't know if you were really there.
âPatrickâ you moaned.
His hand stills and his lips stop.
Fuck
He pulls himself off of you and quickly stands up. Like you were a fire he was trying to get away from
âI cant i,-â he's looking at you, the floor, his eyes are darting all around.
âJane.â you quickly go to stand up and take a step towards him. He takes a step back lol
âIm sorry i,â he turned and left. Not looking back, not grabbing his suit jacket.
Leaving you alone. In the empty office.
âŚ
The next morning was surprisingly crisp. Jane drove to work in silence. He felt awful for leaving you like that. He just didn't know what to do. It had been so long and he hadn't been with anyone sinceâŚ
Once he pulled into the station he just sat in his car. Not moving. He didn't know what he wanted to say to you. He liked you, god did he like you. He just didn't know how to react. He wanted to kiss you, to touch you god knows he's thought about it before, but once you called his name it felt⌠He didn't know how he felt. He leaned forward and rested his head on the wheel.
Bang
He looked up. It was Lisbon. He could tell by her face something was wrong.
Lisbon and Jane made their way inside and the rest of the group was sitting there all except ⌠you
Van Pelt was the first to speak. âI went to pick her up this morning. And when she didn't pick up the phone I assumed she was asleep. I went into her apartment to wake her up. She always sleeps in so she gave me a key, she wasn't there. She never made it home.
Rigsby chimed in. âHow could you tell?â
She always leaves her gun in the same spot. When she wasn't in bed it was the first thing I checked.
âAlright, who was the last one here?â Lisbon asked in a calm and cool tone, she was worried but she had to be solid, for her team.
This can't be happening. Jane thought he couldn't believe he left you alone last night. In his haste he forgot he would have been your drive home. In the entire 3 times you've left after Grace he drove you back. All except-
âJane?â
âYes?â Everyone noticed he was lost in thought.
âCho mentioned when he left around 10:30 you two were still here.â Lisbon said.
Everyone was looking at him for answers waiting for him to speak. To say something that would solve this.
âYou left your jacket here last night, did you two leave in a hurry?â Rigsby mentioned.
âNo we didn't, I did. I uh, left before her.â Everyone looked at his flustered state.
âOkay. We need to know what time she left, Rigsby, go check the cameras to see when she ended up leaving.â Lisbon ordered
âYes boss.â
Shit
âI'll go tooâ. Jane followed behind as Rigsby left to go check.
Jane needed to figure out a lie or an excuse to ask Rigsby if he could check the cameras by himself. As soon as he got to the room Jane put his hand on Rigsby's chest.
âI need a favor.â
âŚ
You wake up and open your eyes but it's so dark. You'd think you were dreaming if you didn't have a splitting headache. You go to grab your head but your hands are stuck at your sides.
âWhat the-â you go to look down, your eyes trying to adjust to the darkness.
You're sitting on a chair. A pretty busted up one that is. You went to move but the rope was too strong. Once your eyes finally adjust you realise. The way the rope is tired is in the same pattern as the victims.
âShit.â
âQuite the problem I'd say.â you look up and squint. There had been someone in the room this whole time. Just sitting and waiting in the corner.
âYou know I'm a cop, they're going to be looking for me.â
âYeah,â he sits up, coming closer to you. âAnd im santa clause.â he walks over finally coming into sight. He's younger than you thought he would be. âIf you're a cop. Where is your badge orâ he leans in and places his hand on your hip. âOr gunâ
Shit
âIâm with the CBI Iâve been working on your case. Your first victim was Kelly Stuart,â
âShut upâ
âShe was suffocated. You kept her for-â
âI said shut upâ he took a step back, turning around realizing his mistake. You kept talking.
â- two days before you finally put her out of her miseryâ you were cut off but a swift punch to the face.
Your head whipped to the side and you yelled in pain.
It took a second before you spoke again.
âTheyâre going to find you.â
âŚ
âWhy do you need to watch this alone?â Rigsby asked, genuinely confused.
Jane moved in closer. âShe, well we,â
breath
âShe got a phone call from her mom that her childhood cat died and she got all upset and was crying and oh gosh it was a mess. But after she told me not to tell anyone.â he moved in closer. âShe didn't want to look weak.â
Rigsby pausedâŚâOkay sure.â Jane flashed his trademark smile and went into the room by himself.
It didn't take him long to find what camera and the best angle to see when she left. He watched as they talked on the couch. He watched as you kissed him. He can't believe he left you like that. And to think that might be the last time you saw him, a coward. When he looked up it was him leaving in a rush to get as far away from his feelings as he could. He watched as you sat back down on the couch. With your head in your hands. You were crying.
He doesn't know how he's ever going to make it up to you. He has to find you.
After he fast forwarded the tape and saw that after about ten minutes you left without taking your badge or gun with you.
He left you to walk home alone at night without any protection. He knew you were the killer type, everyone did, they just didn't say anything. And his selfishness caused her to get taken.
âSo?â Van Pelt asked.
âShe left about 11:30.â Jane stared, and he walked over to her desk, pulling her gun still in its hulster. âWithout her badge or gun.â
âWhy would she do that? She was the killer type. I never go anywhere without my gun.â Cho said.
âHer cat died.â Rigsby announced.
âSo the killer doesn't know she's a cop?â Van Pelt added
âHey this may be a good thing,if he thinks she is just another girl he should stick to his original time line. She's a strong girl, she knows we're coming.â Lisbon paused. âHey i thought her ca-â
âShe doesn't live that far, only a few blocks. Grace? do you know the way she walks home?â Jane cut her off before Lisbon could finish.
âYeah-â
âThen we could walk the same way and see if any bars along the way match up with the disappearances of the other victims.â
âŚ
You were starving. You knew only having a bagel for lunch yesterday was a bad idea. Your brain was foggy and your face was so sore. you can't tell how long you've been here or if it was day or night. All you knew was that the man who took you was gone. You heard him drive off. You knew if you had anytime to escape it would be now.
You desperately tried to free your hands but it was no use. You didn't know how long he would be gone for so you had to think quickly. The chair felt wooden and your legs weren't tied up. You knew if you knocked the chair hard enough against the wall it would break. It would hurt but it was the only thing you could think of.
It took a moment but you managed to stand up. You didn't know the best way to do it so you did what first popped into your mind. You stepped away from the wall. And took a deep breath. You ran towards the wall and at the last moment turned your back.
Craaaaack
You hit the floor and curse out. You went to move your arms but it was no use. One of the chair legs broke off but the arms and the rest of the chair was unfortunately still intact.
Leaving you on the cold floor. Laying on your side. You kept struggling but it was no use.
Your looming fate crossed your mind and you started to cry.
âŚ
âWe've been to about 10 bars in like an hour.â Rigsby said, sounding defeated.
âNo, we've been to nine bars, this one's ten.â Cho retorted.
As soon as they walked in the bar. A kid caught their eye. And he started running to the kitchen.
âHEY!â Rigsby shouted. And started to follow.
âI'll go round back.â Cho said, running out the front to the back of the bar.
Rigsby chased him out to the back where his partner waited, flanking him.
The young man turned around to see he had been caught so he gave up and put up his hands.
Lisbon and Jane watched Cho and Rigsby grill the suspect from the next room.
âI mean how old is this guy, he barely looks 21.â Lisbon asked.
âYou're right he's too young to pull this off. But look at him, he's hiding something.â Jane says with his arms crossed. Not taking his eyes off the suspect
âMaybe a partner, someone older like a mentor?â
âYeah maybe.â
Lisbon pulled out her phone. âVan Pelt, see if the kids got any one older in his life that has a record of violence we think maybe he has a partner.â She hangs up.
They both listen in on the interrogation for a while.
Lisbon turns to Jane.
âhey, I know that that ugly cat of hers died 8 months ago and she was glad it was gone, So what actually happened last night and so help me god if you lie to me.â
He didn't know what to say. What happened last night? He was a coward, he left her by herself after she showed him what it was like to feel something again.
As soon as he opened his mouth to say something Van Pelt came through the door.
âBoss, we've got something.â
As soon as they got out of the room, Jane stopped them. âI'm gonna stay here and see if I can get anything out of him.â
Lisbon nodded and walked down the hall with everyone. He opened the interrogation room door and watched as the kid looked at him.
âWhere are your other friends?"
âBusy. finding where your partner is." Jane watched as the kidsâ faces faltered. Bingo he pulls the chair right next to him.
âNow, you're going to tell me where she is.â
Getting the kid to spill about his brother and the place he keeps them was easy. He knew the others would figure it out soon and follow suit. He wanted to get there as quickly as he could. He couldn't let you die. He couldn't let it happen. Not again.
âŚ
After you eventually pulled yourself together. You thought about your friends, about Jane.
About how he pushed off of you last night. You didn't know what you did wrong. You can't believe you did that to him. You hope you can see him again to apologise. That is you don't die in this disgusting basement first.
You hear a car pull into the driveway and you mentally curse. You hope whoever took you didn't get mad you tried to escape and broke his chair. You thought your chances were slim.
You did all that you could do and thought about the things that made you happy. Trying to stay strong. You know they'll find out who did it. You try not to imagine everyone looking down at your body.
You heard footsteps. Slow and careful. It was taunting you.
When you fell and broke the chair you managed to fall facing away from the stairs so you couldn't see them coming.
You heard the door open and you closed your eyes and tensed. Your whole body goes stiff as you prepare for the inevitable.
You feel a hand on your shoulder. You don't open your eyes; That you didn't realize were full of tears.
âHey, hey , it's me, your okay.â
âJane.â You opened your eyes and saw him on his knees above you.
He puts his hand on your face. You winse in pain.
âYou should see the other guy.â You say trying to make him not pity you.
âAre you hurt?â He starts to look over your body for any wounds.
âNo I'm okay. Just hurry please.â
He starts to work on the rope of one of your arms.
âWhere is everybody, I only heard one car pull up.â
âYeah about that. I might have gone ahead.â He keeps trying but the knot is really tight.
âTell me you brought a knife or something.â He stops and looks at you with a face saying the idea never crossed his mind.
âThere's probably a knife somewhere in the house I'll be right back.â He gets up and runs upstairs.
âJane!â You call out as he leaves you downstairs. And just like that your alone again. At least you know help is coming.
Just then you hear another car pull up. But it's just one, and no sirens.
âShit, come on.â You struggle against your restraints but no use.
Jane comes running down the stairs
âGot it!â He shouts
âShhâ you hush âjust hurry up someones coming."
He made quick work with the knife and was able to free one hand then the next. He held out his hand and pulled you up.
When he saw the rope burn on your arms he held them in rubbing he's thumb over it.
âOh come on, it's not that bad.â There was a silence.
âI thought I'd lost you. I-â
the sound of footsteps cought both your attention.
âCome onâ you point to the wall beside the stairs. âStay here don't move.â You whispered.
âŚ
Its moments like this were when Jane wished he could help. He always felt so useless when he had to stay out of the action like this.
He knew it was for the best. He watched you stalk forward knife in hand. And all the sudden you jump out of sight and he hears the sounds of fighting.
Your out of his line of sight. He can't see you. What if you need his help.
He slowly walked towards the end of the wall and peaked out to see the man on top of you and was holding the knife. You were strong but this man had at least 60 pounds on you.
He looked for something to grab. And found the leg of the chair that broke off. As soon as he grabbed it. The sound of your scream jolted him.
He looked over and the man had stuck the knife in your shoulder.
He ran up behind him and cracked that chair leg as hard as he could against the man's head.
Causing him to fall on his back. Jane looked for a moment to make sure he wasn't going to get back up.
âIs heâ you groan out.
âNo, We're safe now your safe now.â He's looking to see the wound. You had your hand over it to try and stop the bleeding.
He quickly takes his jacket off and uses it to apply pressure to your shoulder. You wince out in pain.
âI know I'm sorry. They'll be here soon, don't worry.â as if right on que he heard the sirens. âHear that? They'll be here before you know it.
âJane i-â
âIt's okay, don't talk, just listen to my voice.â his voice was smooth like honey. The voice he normally reserved for putting people in a trance.
âJane, I'm sorry.â your losing a lot of blood. you're starting to feel cold.
âfor what?â
âFor the other night, i-â you're fighting to keep your eyes open. â I shouldn't have done that to you. I'm sorry. I don't know what i was thinking i-â
He kisses you. one hand still steady on your bleeding wound the other gripping your face. He pulls back when he feels you stop moving. He pulls you into his lap.
âHey, come on, wake up.â he takes the hand from your face to below your jaw to check your palse.
Still beating but slow.
The first voice he hears is Lisbons
âDown here we need a medic.â he shouts out
She gets down stairs. He tells her to cuff the kid.
The EMTs are next through the door and they tell jane to get up so they can help. He stands back. He looks down and sees the blood all over his hands. Your blood.
âŚ
You wake up and open your eyes but the room is light, almost too bright. You let your eye adjust for a moment. You try to remember how you got there but itâs blank.
âThere she is.â You turn to your left and see a beautiful blonde man with a gorgeous smile and striking blue eyes.
You go to sit up but feel a sharp pain in your shoulder.
âHey carful.â He jumps forward and holds lightly holding your shoulder helping you to a comfortable position.
âWhat happened anywaysâ your mind was foggy all you can remember was fighting the guy with a knife.
"it doesn't matter, what matters is that your back, in" he looks at your arm. "In mostly one piece."
You looked up at his eyes, he wasn't meeting your gaze, after all this time of knowing him you could tell when he was just putting on a face. This was one of those times.
"you were worried about me," you said slowly. "Really worried." He finally looks back at you and he has tears in his eyes.
"Im so sorry, I-" he takes a deep breath and re centers himself. "I feel horrible. The other night when we.-" another pause. "I just panicked. I hadn't felt like that since. I haven't... So when you said my name. It made it feel so real. I was scared to lose you too." Hes taken your hand and has been gently but fermly squeezing it. " And then the next morning when you were gone. I thought it was happening again. Im so sorry for leaving you like that."
You say and listen to him pour his heart out. You started to tear up as well.
"Patrick," you squeeze his hand. "I thought I was going to die last night. I don't want to die with any regrets-"
Before you could open your mouth you were silenced by his lips on yours. Slow and deliberate. He's cheeks were wet with tears but so we're yours.
The words were to scarry to be spoken out loud but the kiss said all that needed to be said.

Jack Abbot, to his credit, absolutely adored wearing his wedding ring.
When the conversation regarding marriage had first come up between you, now a good few years ago, you had approached the topic of rings with gentle palms.Â
He had stopped wearing his first ring a few months into your time at PTMC, a decision which was made after many late nights of him pacing around his apartment, whiskey in hand and ring clinking against the glass. When he put the golden band down for the last time, his heart exhaled a breath he hadnât realised it was holding. Three months later, Jack gave into the butterflies in his stomach - ones he thought would never come around again - and asked you out.
When he proposed you had insisted, a beautiful, sizable diamond on your ring finger, that when the pair of you tied the knot, he didnât have to wear a ring again regularly, or at all, if he didnât want to.Â
But damn, did this man ever want to. The smooth gunmetal band which sat on his ring finger was his pride and joy from the moment you slipped it on at the altar. He loved the subtle weight of it grounding him under his blue gloves. And the way it looked against your smooth skin as his hands found your body. Most of all, he loved the way it linked him to you, showing the world that he was a more than happily taken man. There was very, very little which would make Jack part with his ring, even for a short time.
One of the things which did force him to take his ring off was the scratches and grease which came with fixing Robbyâs motorbike. Between reinstalling a chain and shoving his hands between tight metal components, the black rhodium plating on the platinum had been scratched away in several places.Â
âFor fuckâs sake.â The man groaned when he looked down at his hand. Robby looked over at what had caused his best friend so much displeasure.Â
âLooks like itâs time to make a trip back to the jeweller, brother.â The older man grinned, clapping Jack on the shoulder.
When your husband had come home to you, he looked like a school boy who had just shattered a window with a stray baseball, a shy shame present on his face at damaging something so precious. After he confessed his so-called crime, you had laughed, grabbed his hand and kissed his knuckles, an act so warm it sunk into his bones in a way only your love could. Then you pointed out a cut along the back of his hand, patched it up and booked an appointment at your jeweller to have it polished and re-plated.
And that was how, on a cool Monday evening, Jack Abbot had rolled up to the Pitt without his wedding ring. You were off that night, set to instead take over Collinsâ attending shift the next morning, and had bid your husband goodbye with a soft ice-cream flavoured kiss from where you sat curled up on the couch.
The kiss lingered as he walked through the ER doors, bag slung over his shoulder. He had been running his thumb over the empty space on his ring finger, half still thinking about the taste of sweet dairy on your lips as Lena and Dana waved him over. Dana was clearly on her way out, her civilian jacket already over her scrubs. Two unfamiliar women stood beside the charge nurses, each with MEDICAL STUDENT emblazoned on their plastic nametags.Â
âAmber, Amy, this is Doctor Jack Abbot, our nighttime attending and ER cowboy.â Dana nodded in Jackâs direction as he strode over to the desk. She gave him a knowing, teasing look as the two newcomers took him in. Judging by the way the ginger - Amber - straightened her back and licked her lips, and the way Amy lit up in a shy blush, twirling a strand of platinum blonde hair around her finger, the sight of the older attending had made an impression on them.Â
âThese ladies are our newest medical students and are currently on their emergency department rotation.â Lena continued, glancing over her red reading glasses at Dana. They had seen those looks on more than a few newbies over the years. Jack Abbot just had that effect on people.
âDoctor Abbot, itâs such a pleasure.â Amber smiled, wide and cat-like, extending a thin hand to him. âI have heard such good things about PTMCâs emergency department, and Iâm sure youâre the reason for that.â
âWe have a good team of nightcrawlers here, Iâm just a cog in the machine.â He shook her hand, and then Amyâs, his standard dry, polite smile gracing his face.
Before either medical student could gush further, McKay walked up to Jack, tablet in hand. Judging by the dark circles under her eyes, she was more than ready to begin hand-over. He greeted her with a smile, eyes crinkling.
âWhat have you got for me?â

The last of the day shift filtered out an hour later, surprisingly on time compared to the usual timeline the liminal space of the ER followed.Â
âTrouble in paradise, eh boss?â Shen needled with a grin as he came through the ambulance bay door, gesturing at his ring finger, which was just as bare as Jackâs in that moment. As one of your closest friends, you had texted him about the situation the night before, but that wasnât about to stop him teasing the older man. Jack rolled his eyes.
The night progressed with the same erratic heartbeat it always did. A deeply displeased man came in with a mild GSW to his foot, his friend trailing behind the gurney with a guilty look on his face as he attempted to explain the bizarre, convoluted game they had been playing which had somehow involved a shotgun. Jack oversaw Ellis teaching Amy how to remove buckshot from the wound, the blonde turning to him for approval at every step. She flushed bright pink under the fluorescent hospital lights when the attending gave her a âlooks goodâ and a thumbs up, before leaving the room. Ellis shared a look with Shen as he walked past, poorly hiding the amusement on both of their faces.Â
An hour later a trio of twenty-something year old women drunkenly stumbled through the door of the ER in a mess of flakey mascara and hair extensions, following their friend who sat crying her eyes out in a wheelchair. It had turned out to be a wrist fracture, likely thanks to the broken bright red heel which now sat in her lap. When Jack strolled in, x-ray results in hand, the tears instantly stopped, replaced by a watery smile. Amber trailed in a moment later.
The group giggled quietly, and not so quietly, among themselves as the attending calmly walked the patient through the fix for her wrist. She nodded along, carefully not making eye contact.
âWeâre so glad sheâs in such good hands, and biceps!â One of the group sputtered out, being cut off by an elbow to the ribs from the friend sitting next to her, who was a tad more sober - that being a very low bar.Â
âAmber here is one of our med students and great learner and will be putting the cast on for you today.â Jack offered one of his professionally charming smiles, much to the delight of the tipsy gaggle. Amberâs scrowl at the unabashed flirtation from the party-goer melted away at the praise.Â
Half an hour and one fairly well completed cast later, the med student was pulled from the treatment room to accompany Ellis for a new case assessment.
âSoâŚcould I get your numberâŚjust in case I need any furtherâŚcheckups?â The mixture of painkillers, her girls behind her and the late hour made the dark-haired patient unusually bold, even through the now-dried mascara lines on her cheeks.Â
âOur charge nurse can find you some urgent care contact numbers,â Jack bit back a smile as she flexed her fingers and checked her range of motion. âYou can always come back tomorrow if there âs any rubbing or discomfort with the cast - might even meet my wife if you do.â The smile pushed its way through at the mention of you.
At the mention of a wife and the genuine, boyish smile which had appeared on the doctorâs face, the group cooed in unison, a new kind of delight making its way into the room with the information that their handsome doctor had deservedly found his other half.
âOh my gosh Iâm so sorry I didnât mean to-â The patient hid her face in her unimpeded hand.Â
âPhotos! Show us photos!â She was cut off by one of her friends. âIs she a doctor here too?â
âSure is. Damn good doctor, better than me.â The man chuckled, pulling out his phone. Outside of what was required by the ER, he wasnât the most tech-savvy, but the first thing he had done upon getting his new phone was to change his lock screen to a photo of you on your last holiday together - far too long ago now - a large sunhat perched on your head and bright smile on your face.
The girls squealed in collective approval, even the patient forgetting her embarrassment to join in on the comments of âpower coupleâ and âoh sheâs gorgeous!â. Â
Half an hour later, discharge documents in hand marked 1.17am, the group made their way out, waving their farewells and chirping their sweet âgoodbye Doctor Abbotâs. Jack good-heartedly returned their waves, an action which brought a sour expression to Amberâs face.
-Â Â Â Â
Jack Abbot was typically one of the most business-minded, compartmentalised doctors that the PTMC had to offer. On an ordinary day he left the outside world on the other side of the ER doors and focused his whole self on whatever came his way. Yet, that evening, as the night waned he found his mind floating back to you. Youâd be asleep right now, tucked under the small mountain of blankets and sheets which you insisted on when sleeping alone. Somehow, without the band of metal sitting against his skin, he felt lonelier than he had in a long while. He should have just called in sick, he thought with a sigh. He could be enjoying the way you curled up into him in your sleep right now, instead of doing whatever this was.
âYou alright darlâ?â Lena raised an eyebrow at the man and his left hand. He had been standing at the PC for a moment too long, staring blankly at a chart which didnât need half the attention he was giving it. Shen had shooed the med students away to eat âlunchâ - at 2am - and the ER hit the strange, slow, half-awake lull that the nightcrawlers had come to expect on Monday nights. Jack's left thumb ran over where his ring usually sat, again and again. âYouâre not wearing your usual hardware, you piss off our girl?â
âFuck I hope not.â He snapped out of his train of thought, looked up from the screen and smiling wryly with a shake of his head. âCan thank Robby and his death machine for this.â He held up his hand.Â
Lena scoffed, stapling the stack of paper before her.
âSo the only person beating you up right now is you, I take it?âÂ
He grumbled out an agreement, finally closing the patient file before him and beginning charting another.
âSheâs so calm about it. She laughed when I showed her.â He murmured. âItâs justâŚâs unnatural. Being without it.â
Lena let out a chortle at the attendingâs unusually soft confession, patting him on the back as she walked past.
âYouâll be okay, honâ.â

The worst of the shift came in the form of a middle-aged driver who had been at an intersection at the wrong time. After an hour of stabilising procedures and near-misses, he lay unconscious on the table in the middle of Trauma 1 in the early hours of the morning, a large gaping wound along the side of his abdomen the last remaining obstacle between him and finally heading up to the ICU. Amber had been pulled in alongside Jack and Jesse, the three of them appropriately gowned and geared up. Jack was already covered in blood, largely thanks to the punctured artery which had been addressed, but this was finally a task which he could take the time to walk the med student through.
âOkay - this is a simple closure, what nylon are we using for this?âÂ
âUhhâŚstandard 4/0 should do the trick?â She looked up at him through her thick lashes.
âCorrect, good.â The attending nodded as Jesse handed her the correct equipment. Amber smiled under her mask.
She began the procedure, Jack correcting her tension on occasion, but otherwise remaining silent, looming over her with a watchful eye.
âYâknowâŚâ the student continued sewing, âitâs unusual to have an attending who isnâtâŚintimidating.â
âHm?â Jack didnât look at her, eyes still on the procedure. Her knots and lines were straight enough for a med student, but that didnât stop his mind from drifting to the, frankly, picturesque closure jobs you performed. His lip twitched upward beneath his mask - youâd laugh at him describing your work as âpicturesqueâ.
âYouâre just soâŚwarm and supportive,â Amber continued, Jesse cringing from the corner of the trauma room. âSoâŚavailable.âÂ
The male nurse made a mental note to be moved back to the day shift.
âI mean - uhâŚâ she caught herself and the lack of filter between her brain and mouth. âYouâre very, uh- easy to talk to.â
Jack blinked. He was a good attending, he thought, but you handled med students far better than he typically did. Again he smiled under his mask, eyes crinkling at the thought of you. Fuck he missed his ring.
âThanks. I think itâs important that we operate as a unit to get the job done.â He looked up at the clock on the wall. Another hour to go before you would finally show up, but this task was finally complete.Â
âGood job today, kid.â He shed his gown and glasses. âJesse, make sure that the ICU knows thereâs one coming up.âÂ
Jesse half breathed a sigh of relief as the attending left the room, and then half rolled his eyes at the look of smug delight on Amberâs face.Â

In actuality it took less than an hour for you to show up, emerging through the ER doors with your messenger bag slung over one shoulder and cherry-coloured scarf thrown around your neck. In typical fashion you beat the rest of the day shift to being on site, something which you made a mental note to hang over Robbyâs head later. Your winter coat sat over your dark scrubs, a paper bag hanging off one hand, and four hot coffees in a cardboard tray in the other. You strolled up to the hub, which was empty save for Amber at a PC, placing the tray on the desk. The chief attending wasnât around yet to complain about food and drink being outside the breakroom.
âMorning,â you gave Amber a smile. After a beat she looked up from her charting. âYou know where Abbot is?âÂ
âOh, youâre Doordash.â She looked at you and then the tray before her, expression flat. âYou can just leave that there, Iâll find Doctor Abbot shortly.â
âNo need, thanks Amber.â The man in question appeared behind her, face lit up despite the dark circles now under his eyes. âThis is one of our normal night attending,â he introduced you with your full doctorly title, grinning at the way you rolled your eyes at the formality. âSheâs filling in for one of the day shift staff today.â
At this point your husband was standing at your side, eyeing the tray before you. He gratefully accepted the cup marked with a âJâ, taking a sip with a satisfied hum. It was black, medium roast, a drip of cream. Perfect. Jack wanted to kiss you so badly in that moment that it hurt, partially because of the coffee but mainly because of the ache in his heart that the absence of his ring had brought about in your 13 hours apart. But no, in accordance with HRâs conditions on you working together, PDA was to be kept to a minimum while at work.Â
âIâm glad youâre in early - got something that I need an extra set of eyes on.â His lips curved up in a way that only ever meant trouble. âWould you be able to join me for a moment before we begin handover, doctor?âÂ
Amber had been watching this exchange with a sour look of uncertainty. She knew something was afoot here, but was unable to put her finger on it.
âCan I come?â She blurted out, reminding you both of her presence. âTo learn, of course. Doctor Abbot has been so informative today and I am always eager to get ahead.âÂ
âNo need, Amber. You finish up and clock out. Help yourself to a pastry if you want.â Jack took the paper bag from your hand and offered it to her. She took it silently, watching on as you followed after the man, throwing your coat over the back of a computer chair as you went.Â
-
âSo what do you have to show me in this empty, ordinary treatment room which just so happens to be at the very end of the south wing, Doctor Abbot?â You grinned as your husband pulled the curtain shut, before stepping into your space.
His hands, calloused, skilled, found your scrub-clad waist, pulling you close and kissing you deeply. He tasted like the sip of coffee he had enjoyed a moment earlier, and a tad more of desperation than he normally did. You melted into it, fingers finding his thick curls.Â
You finally pulled back to look at your beautiful man, running your ER-short nails down the back of his neck.Â
âMissed you,â he murmured, voice rough as he buried his face in the dip between your neck and shoulder. Jack inhaled deeply, humming softly as he savoured the scent of you and the comically expensive lotion which you lathered yourself in before slipping into your scrubs. It was to stop your skin from drying out under PTMCâs constant air conditioning, you had explained the first time he watched you get ready for work. And he was never one to complain about something which somehow made you even more edible than you were naturally.Â
âWeâve been apart what, 12 hours? What happened to my strong, independent man?â He could feel you smile through your faux-protest.
â13, actually.â Jack pulled himself away from your neck to graze his lips over the crown of your head.
âOh of course youâre missing me then. So many millennia have passed, lover mine.â You teased, throwing your arms around his neck to pull him for another kiss. He could taste the sugar of the danish you had had for breakfast that morning.
âHow aboutâŚâ he mumbled against your lips, his fingers finding their way under the very hem of your scrub top. Your skin was warm and familiar under his touch. â...you call out today-â
âWhat the fuck!âÂ
A feminine screech split the moment. Amber stood before the two of you, having pulled back the curtain just a smidge. She looked mortified, pulling the privacy screen back once more and booking it for the central hub. Jack groaned, resting his forehead against your shoulder. You laughed.
-
The two of you made your way back to the hub a few minutes later. You had slung your stethoscope around your neck, looking every bit the professional you were. Likewise, Jack didnât have a hair out of place, looking down at a tablet as he calmly explained what cases were being carried over by you into the day shift. You had shared a giggling, conspiratorial look in the hallway a moment earlier - you were nothing if not experts at this.
Amber stood at one of the desks, her back to you. She was whispering loudly to Ellis, her voice sharp and irritated. You caught Ellisâ eye as you walked over, and she threw up a peace sign in your direction, one of the brown paper coffee cups being cradled in her other hand.
â-and they were all over each other! It was shocking!â The med student hissed. Ellis nodded slowly, taking a sip from her cup.Â
âSo you saw Doctor AbbotâŚinvolvedâŚwith another member of the staff?â The senior resident queried, voice dry.
âYes! It was absurd.âÂ
âWas it that staff member?â Ellis gestured to where you stood, looking down at a patientâs chart as you listened in on the conversation, unable to fully hide your smile.
Amber nodded emphatically.Â
âSo youâŚsaw Doctor AbbotâŚkissing his wife?âÂ
âHis wife!?â The ginger looked incredulous, spinning around to take in where you and Jack stood. âHe has a wife? Her!?â
Jack sighed where he stood, leaning in as he handed you the tablet, his shift now over. You smothered a giggle with a faux yawn, hand over your mouth. Your husband pressed a kiss to your forehead, eyes flicking up to meet Amberâs in a very deliberate, very rare, work treat. She shrunk back at the look.
âI canât fucking wait to get my damn ring back.â
Old man Jack struggling to keep up with his younger partner. But donât save him, heâs right where he wants to be.
no warnings other than the age gap. gender neutral reader methinks?
âSituation-what?â
âSituationship.â
âThatâs not a word.â
âItâs a word, Jack.â
Heâs pretty sure itâs not a word. Heâs also pretty sure arguing that point is a losing battle since youâd be his opponent.Â
Youâre mid rant about your best friend and some guy named Miles who apparently isnât her boyfriend but also isnât not her boyfriend. Which as far as Jack can tell, just means the guyâs a wuss, but nobody asked him.
âSo heâs her boyfriend?â
âNo. Like, thatâs the whole point, heâs not.â
âBut he acts like her boyfriend?â
âKinda.â
âAnd she acts like his girlfriend.â
âI mean, yeah, butââ
âSo heâs her boyfriend.â
You throw a couch cushion at his head for that one and he catches it without even looking, which heâs a little proud of, but you donât seem to care.
Like he hasnât interrupted at all, youâre talking, hands moving the whole time, telling him how Miles took her to his cousinâs wedding as a plus one, introduced her to his whole extended family, and then got weird the second she used the word relationship in a sentence.Â
Jack genuinely cannot follow half of this. Heâs thirty seconds behind the whole time, stuck on the wedding part, trying to work out what kind of man brings a woman to a family wedding and then chickens out over a label.Â
Honestly, heâs kind of enjoying not understanding it, watching you get worked up over somebody elseâs nonsense relationship, all animated hands and soft pouts and that furrow between your brows that heâd kiss off your face if you werenât so deep in it.
âDid she ask him what they are?â
âSheâs scared to.â
âWhy?â
âBecause if she asks and he says nothing, then itâs real, itâs confirmed nothing. But, right now itâs like, undefined nothing, yâknow? Kinda feels better somehow even though itâs like million times worse.â
Jack blinks at you, quite a beat too long. He has, in his entire adult life, never once thought this hard about anything that wasnât a differential diagnosis. But, here you are explaining tiered levels of nothing, like thereâs a flowchart somewhere for this. (He thinks youâre going to pull it up one of these days. Educate him, like you keep saying.)Â
It should annoy him. It really should. Some kid your age too much of a pussy to know what he wants, doesnât deserve the headspace youâre giving him, though he keeps that one to himself.
You flop down next to him mid sentence, grabbing his arm and using it as a pillow without asking, and he thinks, not for the first time, that he would listen to you explain literally anything for this long if it meant you stayed exactly like this against him.
His free hand finds your waist, thumb rubbing slow into the dip of it, like he canât sit next to you for longer than a minute without needing his hands on you somewhere. âYou know what I think?âÂ
âWhat?â
âI think you people invented whole new vocabulary so nobody has to just ask a question out loud.â
âOkay, boomer.â
âIâm not a boomer.â
âYou said âyou people.â Thatâs such a boomer thing to say.â
âIâm fifty.â
âBoomer adjacent.â
He doesnât really have a comeback for that, mostly because heâs laughing. Youâve created an entire generational subcategory just for him, like he needs his own little demographic bracket.Â
Now youâre on some other detail about Miles and a group chat and a screenshot that got sent to the wrong person.Â
Jackâs given up on the plot actually, checked out three Mileses ago. Heâs just watching your face do fifteen different things in one story, outraged, then gleeful, then outraged again, hands doing most of the narrating on their own, and thatâs a hell of a lot more fun to keep up with than Miles.
âAre you even listening?â
âNo.â
âJack.â
âI stopped around the screenshot thing. I got lost.â
âYouâre useless.â You smack his chest for that, more out of principle than anything really.Â
He catches your hand before you can pull it back, holds onto it, thumb running over your knuckles.
Youâre now saying something about how Miles needs to lock the fuck in, or lose it.
Jackâs only half listening. He has zero clue what half your words even mean and somehow could not give less of a shit about that right now.
AN : got so burnt out, I whipped this shit in like twenty minutes. Old man Jack, youâre always dear to me đââď¸
âSo if youâre cooked, thatâs a bad thing. But if youâre cooking, thatâs a good thing?â
âYes. Absolutely. You got it.â
âSo when exactly would I use being cooked?â
You try to hold on your laughter at Jackâs genuine confusion but also interest, âSo say youâre in a rough situation. Like you have a job interview coming up and you got a flat tire on the way there. Youâd say âIâm so cooked!â because youâd be late to the interview or even miss it and then you wonât get the job.â
Jack mulls over your explanation, slowly nodding his head as he comes to an understanding, âOkay so when I forgot we had a date that one time and I was running late, I was cooked because I knew youâd be upset with me?â
You nod, âYes. One hundred percent a perfect scenario for you to use that phrase.â
