RE: ABLEISM IN THE RPC.

ok i’m gonna make this post because i feel like this may not be known in the rpc with how often i see it done, and as a person with a physical disability, i wanted to make a post to maybe help inform people who are lacking this knowledge for any reason.

the word cr*pple is a slur. the definition of the word cr*pple and variations (cr*ppling, cr*ppled) relate to physical disability. to use this word in relation to mental illnesses is offensive, because the c slur has been used to degrade and dehumanize physically disabled people for a long time, and also by definition of the word and variations, it does not apply to mental illness. a substitute word that would fit what i see people trying to convey is DEBILITATING (this goes for ooc as well, if you are not physically disabled, please don’t describe your illness as cr*ppling, as again, you cannot be crippled by a mental illness by very definition of the c word). on top of this, you should not use the c slur if you are an able bodied mun writing a disabled character, please, just don’t do it, there are plenty of alternatives to using an offensive and degrading slur to describe your character. it is up the discretion of a disabled mun to decide if they wish to use the c word in their writing if they are writing a disabled character.

you should also avoid using the c slur in urls if your character is disabled, for the same reason above, and point blank should not use it if your character is not. another protip would be to be careful about using mobility aid names (crutch, cane, wheelchair) in your url if your character does not use mobility aids / there is no reason for it to be there (so, if your character has a vice they use as a crutch and you are using the word crutch in your url in relation to this, go ahead as you have a reason to be using it that isn’t offensive!), as mobility aid users are often shamed and discriminated against due to their mobility aids, and though it’s not agreed on if this is outright ableist, it is very offensive when those terms are just thrown in there for no reason.

to continue using the c slur when you’re aware it’s a slur for no good reason ( a general rule for in character related use of it i’ve heard is: if you wouldn’t use the r or f slurs in character, you should not be using the c slur in character, if your character really is the type to use that word, at least educate yourself on the word, make it clear in your rules you don’t condone use of the c-slur, and tag things appropriately ) is offensive and ableist.

ableism in the rpc is rife, though i feel it can sometimes be put down to ignorance, there’s a lot more than this but there are just some common tidbits i see, i focused on ableism towards physically disabled people here as i don’t want to speak for people with mental illnesses on what is offensive to them. people with mental illnesses and people with physical disabilities are equally as valid, and we should all be respected, if someone who suffers from whatever illness you are portraying tells you that you are being offensive or doing something wrong, and you do not suffer from what you are portraying, listen to them, take their advice on board, they did not have to take time out of their day to put energy into emotional labour to inform you of these things, appreciate that they are.

the c word is a slur, that is a fact, some people are offended by it, others are not, both opinions on it are valid, however that does not change the fact that the majority opinion in my experience is if you are not disabled you should not use it, just like with the r word. please do not reblog this post and try and argue with people on this topic or say you as a able bodied person should be able to use the c-slur for whatever reason, reblog it if you agree, leave it be if you don’t. be respectful of others as you would wish them to do to you, and please do not put disabled muns who may agree with this post in a situation where they come on the dash and see people excusing this kind of behaviour when the use of this slur can be extremely harmful.
