random late night heated rivarly thoughtzzz coming from someone who's watched the entire show no less than five times and the pilot no less than ten times. don't take these too seriously it's 1:42 am.
the soundtrack slaps so hard but "it's you" has me laughing through the episode 2 sex scene every time whyyyy did they have shane's thoughts blasting through the lyrics in the breathiest voice possible
ilya evil in vegas fr fr and it pains me that shane had to apologize for tuna melt-gate while vegas gets brushed over with a text are we joeking. i kind of am but not really.
season 2 scares me so much on multiple fronts...the darker subject material...whether it can live up to the first season...how certain side characters who play less into the plot of the long game will fare...shane's struggles with eating being left up to interpretation (just like his autism...)
i've seen many different viewpoints about how the show depicts shane's autism, from people on and off the spectrum. while i do think hudson absolutely NAILS his performance and i do love that both him, rachel, and jacob have gone on record multiple times about shane being autistic in interviews...i will be a little upset if the show never fully addresses/acknowleges it. i think allowing so much of shane's personal struggles to live on the periphery of the narrative (as supposed to ilya's which are very much a physical part of it) actively weakens his character and the show a bit as a whole. and also i'm greedy and want more explicit representation sue me.
episode 3 and episode 4 could've been switched around for timeline/narrative purposes and maybe they should've. they do work very well as is, but the multi year gap between skip's storyline haunts me.
the serial killer bit in episode 3 fills me with anger. anger that we don't get an entire season where scott hunter is the protagonist i love him so ungodly much. i want to study his brain for science.
how old is show scott please someone tell me.
sorry francois but i simply don't believe that scott's chirp just happened to strike at shane/ilya by ACCIDENT. i feel like the scene works so much less with that reading. what is scott even intending to say with "you're starting to sound like him" if not "i know ur big gay secret". i feel like the "scotty doesn't know" reading is perhaps an attempt to make scott hunter more sympathetic in terms of his relation to the ilya/shane plotline but like scott is so interesting BECAUSE he is so terrible!!!! yes he changed the game and his coming out was a huge moment in-universe for queer hockey players. he also threatened another queer hockey player (a younger, already marginalized hockey player nonetheless) over the weakest chirp in the history of hockey. both things can be true.
love that the next we see of them together timeline-wise they are eating froyo and being psychologically tormented by carter vaughn of all people. i love this show so fucking much.
i'm sorry but you can't show me the first all-star scene and convince me scott hasn't know since the beginning. him bringing up rooming next to ilya right after "1221"??? he knows. at the very least he suspects. and if the chirp was born of suspecting rather than knowing..idk if that makes it worse or better lol.
i know jj is going to piss me off in season 2 but i love him soooo much he and carter vaughn are such underrated side characters in my opinion.
shayden's friendship is sooooo cute and i'm realllyyy interested to see how season 2 handles hayden's character.
i love how much the show mines drama out of the potential of shane and ilya being found out while also constantly putting them in the most insanely revealing situations...
the character of rose landry is one of these situations. why are u trying to engage in challengers with your boyfriend and ur costar in a club. why are u confronting ur gay boyfriend in a public restaurant. why are u putting ur gay boyfriend on speakerphone while getting ur makeup done. my chaotic neutral queen. she would've ended scott hunter's career in five seconds.
i'm addicted to svetlana/rose fics i snort that yuri cocaine UPPP. if the two of them (especially svetlana) barely appear in season 2 i will be so sadddd.
sasha intrigues me so much who is this older eviler gayer will byers and whyyy is ilya so uncomfortable around him there's a story there.
mourning ilya perspective in sochi...i know that's what fanfiction is for (and/or reading the books maybe)...but still i grieve...
how is ilya simulatenously the funniest character on this show and the most depressing. connor storrie the actor you are.
how am i able to read shane's mind through the tiniest microexpressions on his face. hudson williams the actor you are.
the commodification of shane hollander haunts me so much my stomach drops whenever one of his silly ads pop up in-universe. somebody get him OUTTTTT somebody SAVE HIM (he doesn't want to be saved...)
interested to see how the tell don't show aspect of hockey in heated rivalry affects season 2. based on my limited knowledge of the long game...hockey seems to play a much bigger part in the narrative.
if destroy everything you touch by ladytron isn't used in season 2 for an opening episode montage (ala mangetout and my moon my man)...i probably won't be that upset cause i already know the season 2 soundtrack is gonna slap. but still. i think it's one of the most "heated rivalry opening montage" sounding songs in existence.
in conclusion this show is perfect no notes it deserves every emmy and it kills me that it will receive none for arbitrary reasons. ilya rosanov and shane hollander are at the top of my favorite fictional character's list and i think it will be awhile before anyone surpasses them.
