as soon as you announce you're pregnant, people will jump at any chance to tell you how miserable and awful parenthood is and that you'll regret it, etc. "Just you wait!"

but i dont think ive ever been happier? I LOVE being her parent. I love dedicating myself to this little person i made. Its been the experience of my lifetime and I try my hardest to be the best version of myself every day for her. I think waiting until my late 20s instead of having her at like, 19-25 allowed me to mature a lot more and make better choices so that I can provide her with a life she deserves.

Tldr it's been so great. I may want to do it again... we'll see <3

hi!! again i wanna congratulate you on the safe journey and beyond <3 i'll be honest your blog helped me accept a dream of mine that im hoping can happen in the future and i wanted to ask; is it okay if we ask for advice based off of your pregnancy experience? nothing dire/invasive or anything that should be saved for an obgyn of course, just about small and simple run of the mill stuff. if not for any reason thats totally fine, wanted to make sure i'm not crossing any boundaries beforehand!

my l&d experience

Its been a bit but I wanted to share a brief summary of how labor and birth went now that i have a few spare moments. I'll be keeping some details out for myself and my daughter's privacy :) ->

On Dec. 15th I was 50% effaced and 1cm dilated. My body kinda rode through prodromal labor and irregular braxton hicks contractions for another week and a half, and baby really engaged, settling herself in my hips. I dont know if anyone else experienced the same problems, but my body was completely restless and I'd start shaking with nerves and anxiety out of nowhere. The only time I'd get genuine rest is when I completely exhausted myself into sleeping.

Dec. 26th, my mucus plug gradually came out. very gross and clumpy lol. it looks like milky snot and i knew then that I'd probably go into labor within hours or days. It was way too cold to go on a walk and pressure my body, so I had to pace around the house and hope for the best. (If I ever have another baby, I definitely wont have them in the winter again. way too hard on my physical and mental health. and the constant darkness sucks)

At this point, my belly was really stretched and low and i could feel her wedged so far into my pelvis I felt like she was gonna fall out of me if I coughed

Dec. 29th at 39 weeks I had my first contraction around 7:30-8am while I was sleeping. I wasn't entirely sure if it was a bad BHC or a real one, so i waited about 25ish minutes before another one came. It felt like extremely awful period cramps with a weird tingling sensation in my hips and back Those were the mildest ones I'd have for the next 20+ hours.

I think i posted about wanting to go back to sleep but i never got to lol. I remember having so much adrenaline that I showered and ate breakfast and went about my day just pacing around/hanging out. I didnt contact any of my family because tbh.... I didnt want them to bother me or stress me out lmao

My contractions went from 25 mins apart to about 14 mins by 7pm. Slow progress.

Nauseating contractions started right around the same time my water broke. I remember being shaken from a particularly bad one and puking. I went to move again and as I got up i felt a slight shift in pelvic pressure. Not much of a pop or gush like in movies, and more like a small steady stream. I soaked through two pairs of clean sweatpants before we finally headed to the hospital. In hindsight I probably should have left a lot earlier but I didnt know 🙃 I felt pretty good on the way there

by 9-10pm I got through triage, checked into l&d. 5cm dilated. contractions 8 minutes apart. things were pretty steady for a bit. Nurses were very kind and I didnt have any issues. I had a simple birth plan outline (no episiotomy, no unnecessary intervention, etc) and im super thankful my partner handled most of that stuff for me, because by the time an hour past, contractions were 4 minutes apart + 6cm dilated.

Active labor contractions were like... sharp pressure, really low in my back. Its an intense, squeezing, cramping sensation that i could feel all the way in my toes. I swear it lasted forever. They would peak at like 40 seconds and I couldn't talk or breath or move at all. Wherever i was is where id stay lol. I preferred any position that allowed me to stretch out my hips and back (leaning over the bed, kneeling or swaying and holding onto something/someone).

This lasted until around 3:22am. The pressure became so unbearable I was crying in pain, exhausted, ready to move onto an epidural/intervention because I was laboring for 20 hours at this point. but i could tell something was happening and I started shaking and all the sudden my body was pushing without really meaning to. It was like my body went into auto pilot and I was just there. A very out of body experience if that makes any sense

The nurse told me I was 10 cm but not to push to fast because I risked tearing. When I tell you that is SO fucking hard.. Fetal ejection reflex is crazy. I maneuvered myself onto my side and felt like I had to close my legs or do /something/ to keep my body from forcing her out.

Pelvic exercises pre-labor really do help because if im being completely honest, crowning isnt the worst part of labor. Very short lived. I think active labor contractions without an epidural are worse on the pain scale.

Dec. 30th @ 3:40am everything happened very quickly. Immense pressure quickly turned into burning and it was hard to breathe or think. In hindsight I really should have gotten an epidural. I felt like I kinda "blacked out" and didnt get to fully feel present in the moment. I felt so raw and tunnel visioned, genuinly running on instinct and the sound of my heart beating in my throat.

there was a pop and a gush and I was told to hold it there for a few seconds before my body pushed the rest of her out. it felt like static in my ears tbh. I didnt really know what anyone was saying to me. My partner said I looked "focused on the task at hand" lmao.

At 3:49am, all the pressure released from my body at once. there were a few moments where I just about had a panic attack because I didnt hear her right away (the cord was wrapped around her neck and it caused pressure and a slight heart rate drop) and my fingers and toes were numb (raynauds). within a minute she was placed in my arms.

8lbs, 2oz. <3

as someone who has chronic illness and is gender queer, I feel very lucky to have had an uncomplicated pregnancy and birth. Im so thankful and I wouldnt change a single thing. It was the weirdest, craziest, most real and raw experience I think I'll ever have. Im not a religious person in the slightest but its the closest ive ever felt to something spiritual. To Mother Earth or something so beyond just myself.
