Part 1
now playing - Earrings by Malcolm Todd
__
The past few weeks have been quiet. Cassie hasn't been back to the dorm since your breakup; part of you hopes it's because she genuinely regrets what she did, while the other part suspects she's found another girl and already moved in with her.
That is, until you hear a knock at the door. Your head jerks up from its resting place in your arms. You squint at the door for a moment, trying to tell if it was your imagination or reality.
Standing up, you walk over after hearing another knock. You turn the key and open it, coming face-to-face with Cassie.
“Hi…” Her voice wavers slightly as her eyes scan your face before settling on yours.
“Hi.” You tilt your head at her, your gaze dropping to her hands hidden behind her back. “Whatcha hiding?”
Cassie’s eyes widen at your question. She brings her hands to her chest and reveals a beautiful bouquet of flowers.
“These are- uh for you.”
Looking at the flowers, you scoff. “You think flowers will buy your way back with me?”
“No!” She takes a deep breath and lowers them, defeated. “I-I’m just hoping you might… give me another chance?”
Your eyebrows raise at her words, then you laugh softly. “You’re joking. Have you forgotten the part where you called me insufferable? Annoying?”
She opens her mouth to reply, but you cut her off. “The nerve you have to stand here asking for another chance, Cassie. Go find another girl to bet on.” You slam the door in her face.
Cassie stares at the door for a few seconds, then slowly nods and turns away, clutching the flowers tighter than before.
You’ll be hers again; she’ll make sure of it.
-
Cassie has been relentless in her attempts to win you back—notes in your locker, flowers at your door, her passed notes in class.
Amelia snatches a note from your hand and reads aloud, “You look beautiful today, dash CM.”
“Charming, isn't it?” Your voice is flat as you look up from your work.
You try to grab the note, but her hand pulls it away. “Amelia.”
She grins and places the note in your hand. “Are you keeping them?”
You roll your eyes, fold the note, and shove it into your pocket. “You never know. If she’s got a girlfriend while doing all this, I’ve got proof.” You shrug.
She laughs and shakes her head, subtly glancing at Cassie. “She's staring.”
“Yeah? Let her.” You chew on your lip before packing up.
Unbeknownst to you, Cassie is watching as you leave class, her friend's words going in one ear and out the other.
“Cassie…”
“Cassie!”
“What?” Her head snaps towards her friend, her tone sharp.
Her friend, Megan, blinks before pointing at the classroom door. “The lesson finished three minutes ago. It’s lunch now.”
Cassie sighs, loosely swinging her bag over one shoulder. She wonders if she should continue with her actions, you clearly don't seem interested.
“Cassie. Why are you thinking about her so much? You broke her heart. Get over it.” Megan questions, eyebrows knitted.
Cassie’s eyes widen in disbelief. “Get over it? Megan, I broke the heart of the sweetest girl in the world… probably. How can I just- get over it?”
Her friend shrugs. “I don't know. Go to a party? You haven't been to one in ages, and we miss you.”
Cassie chuckles. “I don't- I don't do that anymore.” She looks down at the floor, avoiding tripping over her own feet.
“Your loss. Hey, see you after school?”
Cassie hums at her friend’s words, stopping in front of her locker, resting her head against it, and playing with the gold chain around her neck.
“This sucks.”
-
“At last she persists.” You throw a note onto Amelia's desk in her dorm.
‘Meet me? At your favourite coffee shop, I'll buy you something. 6pm - Cassie’
She spares a glance down at the note before looking up at you. “I say go.” She shrugs and begins to write in her notebook.
“That's all you have to say?” Your eyes narrow at her, leaning over to pick the letter back up and place it into your back pocket.
“Yeah.”
You scoff. “Are you forgetting the part where I told you she had her lips on another girl?
“I’m not telling you to get back with her. I’m simply just saying that you should meet her and see what she wants.” She raised a brow at you.
You sigh and close your eyes, you already know what Cassie wants from this meeting, and you aren't going to give her the satisfaction of saying yes.
Cassie sits at a table in the cafe, her hands tapping against the table to the beat of the song playing from the speakers.
She recites her words in her head, immediately turning her head up when she sees someone slide into the seat in front of her.
“You came.” Her eyes light up.
“Yeah. I want to know what you've got to say to me.” You nonchalantly shrug and lean your head on your hand, turning it to look around the shop.
“Do you- uh want anything?” She moves to grab her wallet, pausing to look at you when your hand covers hers.
“I’m okay. Just tell me what you want to say.” You loosen your hold on her hand, not even smiling at her.
Cassie brings her arm back and rests it on her lap. She exhales softly. “I’m sorry. I should never have accepted that bet to get with you. If I had known I would have actually fallen in love with you that whole thing at the party would have never happened.”
She traces shapes onto the table, avoiding eye contact. “That girl I had my arm around meant nothing. The stuff I said about you was heavily influenced by my friends, and they also weren't true.” She mutters the last bit.
“Why would you invite me to a party if you knew that you would be kissing other girls?” You cross your arms over your chest and lean back.
“Well, I didn't know I would be kissing other girls.”
You stare at her, an eyebrow raised, not believing her.
“I’m serious! If I had known I wouldn't have invited you.” Her hands raise in front of her.
“Wow.” You let out a half-assed laugh. “Thanks for your consideration.”
She grunts at you. “Please, at least forgive me...” She sighs softly. “I’ll change- I-I’ll actually go to my lessons. I’ll do whatever.”
You look up at her words. Finding the ashamed look on her face you sign and bring her hand into yours.
“I forgive you, Cassie.” Her eyes snap up to your face, her eyes flashing with shock “However… I can't give you another chance.”
She runs her thumb over your knuckles in thought. “Not ever?” Her voice comes out quiet.
You remove your hands from her grasp and stand from the table, you take one last look at her before leaving the shop.
Cassie watches you leave with her jaw clenched. She places her head in her hands and rubs her eyes harshly. Her head turns back to the door before the corner of her lips curls up in a smile.
You never answered her question.
-
It's been two months since the break up with Cassie, she's seemed to have changed how she acts around you and others. People have noticed how different she is at school, no longer sneaking to the toilet to skip lessons, no unnecessary arguments in the hallway, and its been a month since that interaction at the coffee shop, there have been little bits of conversation between you and Cassie. Whether it was in a lesson, at the lockers or even outside of school.
Walking back into the dorm, Cassie is sitting on her bed which she hasn't been in for the past few months.
She looks up from her phone and sends you a smile. “Hope you don't mind, I've decided to move back in.”
“Well, it's not like you could go any longer without paying rent.” You joke as you place her shoes to the side of her bed, rather than the middle of the floor.
She chuckles and turns her phone off, her eyes following you around the room ignoring the racing of her heart from just looking at you.
“So I've been thinking.” She begins.
“Oh god. That's never a good thing.” You tease her as you sit down on the bed next to her, nudging her shoulder with yours.
She laughs softly and twirls the golden chain around her finger. “I was wondering if you would like to go to a party with me?”
She sees the look on your face and scrambles to assure you -and maybe even herself- that it's nothing to worry about. “It's only a small one, it's not like… last time.”
You can only hum at her words. Just because you broke up with her doesn't mean you lost your feelings for her. “Promise?”
She holds out her pinky, a cheesy smile crossing her face. “Pinky promise.”
You hold her stare before interlocking your pinkies together, pursing your lips to hold back a smile.
“We should probably get going then, huh?” You glance at her phone screen that lights up, taking a glance at the time.
Cassie lifts her thumb. “You didn't lock it.”
You glance down at your hands before touching your thumbs, letting a laugh leave your mouth. “You’re such an idiot.”
Cassie can't help the way her cheeks warm up at your words, swallowing the lump in her throat she stands to grab her shoes, hoping she doesn't make a fool of herself tonight.
-
Cassie enters the apartment before you do, holding it open for you. She grins at you as you walk past, watching as you roll your eyes.
“A thank you would be nice.” She leans down to your ear.
You hum in thought. “I don't know.” She mockingly glared at you causing you to laugh. “Fine. Thank you.”
She hums in satisfaction before guiding you towards the main party area. Everyone’s eyes light up as they see Cassie walk into the room.
“Look who finally showed up!” A beer is shoved into her hands before all eyes are turned to look at you.
The room is almost deafeningly silent; you hold your breath as you await a response from anyone.
“Who invited her?” The question is more like a statement.
“I did, Harvey.” She says the name like it leaves a bad taste in her mouth.
He raises his hands in surrender and turns back to his conversation, the room now filling with chatter.
Cassie turns and passes you a drink. “Sorry, ‘bout him. He can be a dick when he wants.”
You shake your head and bring the drink to your mouth. “It’s no bother. I had a feeling that at least someone would react like that.”
Cassie sighs and shakes her head. “But they shouldn't. They should be asking, ‘Oh wow who's that gorgeous girl with Cassie?’. Not whatever that was.”
“You mean that?” You sheepishly look at her.
“Of course.” She smirks at you over her bottle and winks at you.
Cassie begins to get more clingy as the night goes on, her hand resting on your lower back, from your shoulder to fully around your waist.
“I love you, you know.” Her slurred voice meets your ears over the sound of loud music.
You freeze in her grasp and turn your head to face her. “You’re drunk, Cassie.”
“I’m not drunk.” Her hand tightens around your waist, pulling you closer. “Even if I was, drunk words are sober thoughts.”
You chuckle at her. “Do we need to get you home?” You scan over her form, noticing a slight sway to her body.
“Will you stay with me?” Her eyes blink wider as she looks at you.
You brush a stray hair from her face, enjoying the way her cheeks flush a light shade of red.
“Yeah, I will.”
-
“I mean what I said.” Cassie stumbles into the dorm, toeing her shoes off and throwing herself into your bed.
“Mean what, Cass?” The nickname slips out of your mouth before you can stop it.
She doesn't seem to hear it as she continues to talk. “That I love you.” She sits up on the bed and looks up at you as you stand between her legs.
As you stare down at her, you can't help the feeling that blooms in your stomach at her words. Cassie moves her hands to your waist and rests her forehead against your stomach.
“I love how you chew on your pens when you're really focused. I love how you spend too long in the shower because you're singing. I love how you hate it when I wear mismatched socks. I love you.” Cassie presses her face into your jumper, her hands holding your sides as if you’re going to disappear.
“Please give me another chance.” She begs you.
You bring your hands to rest atop her head, running your hands through her hair as you weigh your options. Either you tell her to let it go and you’ll only ever be friends again, or you tell her what you truly want and then all her attempts to get you back won't go to waste
“Okay…” You nod, bringing your lip into your mouth.
Cassie's head sharply looks up at you, her eyes glossy as they meet yours. “Really?” Her breathy voice filled the silent room.
“Really.” You bring your hands to her cheeks.
You stumble back as she jumps up from the bed, her eyes search yours as if they hold th answers to all of her questions.
She opens her mouth before closing it. She brings her lips to yours, her hands finding the back of your neck, pulling you impossibly closer.
She holds it before pulling away, tears falling down her cheeks. “I’m sorry. I-I didn't mean what I said or did last time.”
You brush the tears away from her face. “I forgive you, Cassie.”
“It- it was stupid. I’ve been thinking of what to say to you since you gave back the necklace.” This makes you glance down at her neck, finding the golden chain sitting there.
You bring it into your grasp and run your thumb over it. “Would have thought you’d pawn it by now.”
She immediately shakes her head. “Never.” She lowers her head. “It reminded me of you.”
You lift her head with your hands, making eye contact with her. “No more parties, they make you do stupid things.”
She nods, her eyes flickering to your lips. “What if you come with me? Like you're my little chaperone.”
“You’re so annoying.” You pull her towards you, pressing your lips against hers as her hands go to your waist.
“That wasn't a no.” She mumbles against your lips.
“Shut up.”

Part 2
now playing - My Own Worst Enemy by Lit
__
Cassie McKay does not date, the whole school knows it by now. There was a rumour circulating that she was dating Grace from her class because someone caught them kissing at a local bar.
That was quickly shut down when another person caught her making out with Hannah from economics class.
Safe to say, Cassie McKay is a player.
What's even worse than being played by Cassie McKay? Being her dormmate.
-
Walking through the door you’re immediately met with the sight of Cassie sitting on her bed with her hand shoved down some girl's pants.
A groan leaves your mouth and you walk over to your bed unnoticed by the two eating each other's faces.
You pick up the bra that's been clearly thrown onto your bed carelessly. You sigh and throw it towards the two, not even looking at them as they jump away from each other.
A noise comes out of the girl's mouth, and you cut her off before she can even get a word out. “I don't care. Just do your shit and leave me alone.”
You hear shuffling coming from behind you, followed by the shutting of the door.
Cassie sighs and grumbles, “You are such a cockblocker.” Cassie flops down onto her pillow, her hands covering her face. “Can’t a girl have some fun in her own dorm?”
Sitting at your desk, you open your laptop and start typing your password as you reply. “Don’t have some class to attend or something?”
Her eyes narrow at you from across the room, her eyes scan you up and down before she stands from her bed and stretches her hands above her head.
“Don’t you need to get a sex life?” She grumbled under her breath as she moved to invade your personal space. She hovers behind you, peeking at your laptop before getting bored and leaning against the wall.
“The answer is yes by the way.”
You roll your eyes and finally turn to look at her, a fake smile crosses your face. “How about instead of bothering me about how much I don't have sex… You go and- I don't know, actually attempt to learn something that isn't how to be the biggest dick in the whole school?”
She hums at your words. A smirk crosses her face before she leans towards you. “When’s the last time you got laid?”
“We’re not doing this.” You turn back to your desk.
She gives you a once-over, her eyebrow raising. “So never?”
You roll your eyes at her and don't respond, clicking your pen and writing in your notebook.
You continue to feel her eyes on the back of your head. Getting tired of her stare you snap your head back to look at her.
“Jesus Christ. Stop staring at me and go find a new girl to fuck.”
Her eyebrows raise as her hands lift in surrender, she walks away from you and places her hand on the door. “Please get yourself laid within the next few weeks.”
“Maybe then you’ll stop being a bitch.” She mumbles under her breath as she leaves the room.
You close your eyes and take a deep breath. “There’s no way she's just called me a bitch.”
-
You’re walking through the hallway when you feel an arm wrap around your shoulders. Turning your head you’re met with Cassie’s blue eyes, shrugging her arm off your shoulder you reach for your locker watching her from your peripherals as she leans against the lockers next to you
“What do you want, McKay?” Your voice comes out flat.
“So… I need you not to stay at the dorm tonight.”
You shove your books into the locker turning your head to look at her. “Why?”
She sighs before her eyes drift past you, following a girl walking past.
“Cassie.” You gain her attention again.
“I need the room.” She states, giving no other information as she shrugs.
You bring your bottom lip into your mouth as you give her a look of disbelief. “You’re fucking joking me.”
You scoff and shut your locker walking away from her with a shake of your head.
She freezes for a second before following you. “Hear me out.”
“Fuck off, Cassie. Go find someone else's dorm to party in.” You quicken your pace, feeling other people's eyes watching the two of you.
She grabs your wrist and pulls you back towards her, she gives you a pleading look. “Please.”
You stare at her for a second before ripping your wrist from her grip. “Whatever. Just keep it tidy.”
You turn and walk away from her, missing the way she pumps her fist in success.
-
“Is she actually using your dorm to host a party?” Your friend, Amelia, asks you from across her room.
You shrug your shoulders and bite the inside of your cheek. “Don’t know, don't care.”
Amelia laughs at your words. You bring your pen to your mouth, biting the tip before pulling it from your mouth and looking up at her.
“I mean surely there are other places she could have done it. I think she likes to piss me off.” Shaking your head you look back down at your notebook.
“Maybe she wants you to think she's cool,” Amelia suggests.
You let out a laugh and close your notebook, standing up from the desk chair and sitting next to her on the bed.
“That girl is far from cool, she is the most annoying person on earth.”
Your friend's eyes flash with something indescribable. “Is that so?”
“Yes! Maybe if she started thinking with her brain and not her pants she could actually achieve something.”
Amelia scans you for a second before a grin crosses her face.
Noticing your friend's lack of response you turn to look at her, and you frown at the look on her face. “Why- why are you looking at me like that?”
“Do you have a crush on Cassie?”
Your cheeks immediately flush and you turn your head away from her. “No. Of course not, don't be silly.”
She gasps. “Do you have a crush on Cassie McKay?” Her eyes widen as she looks at you, taking in your flushed facial features and lack of eye contact.
“We are done talking about this.” You stand from her bed and lie down on her spare bed.
“No we’re not.”
You cover yourself with the blanket and place your hands over your ears. “Lalalala, I can't hear you.”
She laughs and grabs one of her teddies and throws it at your back. “You're such a fucking liar.”
Entering the dorm the next morning your eyes catch Cassie passed out on the floor with a half-full beer bottle resting near her head.
“Jesus, Cassie.” You crouch to pick up the glass bottle and place it on her bedside.
You sigh and wrap your arms around her biceps and lift her, watching as her eyes flutter open and meet yours.
“Hey, gorgeous.” Her words are slurred as she speaks. “You come here often?”
You help her sit on her bed responding to her question. “I live here.”
“Even better.”
You hum at her words, pushing her to lie down against her cushions. Her eyes flutter closed again as she falls back to sleep.
You blink down at her sleeping form before standing up from your crouched position. “She’s not going to remember that.”
-
“Hey! You know Cassie, right?” A girl sits next to you in the cafeteria, and she's sitting so close to you, that you could probably tell her where she sprayed her perfume that morning.
“Why?” You give her a slight side-eye as you bring your fork to your mouth.
“Can you tell her that she shouldn't be moaning other girls’ names during sex?” She whispers into your ear.
Your fork freezes in the air, and your head turns towards her fully. Your eyebrows furrow. “What?”
“Tell her to stop moaning other girls’ names during sex,” She states now rather than asking.
You run your tongue over your top teeth. “And you can’t tell her this because…” You trail off.
“Because- because I don't want to talk to her ever again.” She pouted at you, “Please?”
Holding back a cringe you nod your head at her request. “Of course.”
She plasters a fake smile on her face and walks away from you, joining her group of friends who were all watching the interaction take place.
Watching as they all walk away from you bring your hands up to your face and rub your eyes as a yawn leaves your mouth.
Opening the door, Cassie sits up on her bed, her eyes locking onto yours as you shrug off your jacket.
“Did I say anything weird to you last night?” She chews on her lip as her head follows your movement.
“Uh, no? Why?” You send her a glance as you pull out your desk chair, pushing your laptop open.
“Well has anyone come up to you asking something weird?” She stands up and leans against your bedframe.
You start typing. “Yeah. A girl told me to tell you to stop moaning other girls' names.”
“Did she tell you who's?”
“Should I have asked?” You countered.
“No!” She responds quickly before clearing her throat. “No.”
You blink up at her. “Why are you acting weird?”
“I’m not acting weird.” She crosses her arms.
“Yeah, you are. You’re acting like a kid about to confess their feelings.” You take in her appearance.
Her hair is slightly messy, her Deadpool t-shirt hangs loosely on her body, and her bottom lip has been brought into her mouth. You ignore the fluttering in your chest.
“Well maybe…” She cuts herself off hesitating turning her head to look at the wall next to you, she mutters something inaudible under her breath.
“What?” You squint your eyes at her. Why is she so nervous?
“I like you.” She says your name. “A lot. To the point where I don't know what to do with it.”
You stare up at her, before scoffing and standing up from your chair. “You are unbelievable.”
Cassie’s heart drops as you turn to leave she grabs your arm like she did the day before and pulls you into her, your hands finding their place on her chest.
She looks into both of your eyes, her breath heavy. “Why don't you believe me?”
You push her away from you. “Cassie, you are the last person who would be confessing your feelings for anyone, let alone me.”
“People can change.” She reasons.
You shake your head. “Not you Cassie.”
She takes a step towards you her eyes full of pleading. “Please? Just give me a chance.”
You stare at her for a few minutes, before looking at the ceiling and sighing. “Only one.”
She profusely nods her head. “Anything you want.”
-
The next few months go by with ease. Cassie treats you unlike any girl she's been with. She buys you gifts, takes you out on dates somewhere fancy once in a while.
Cassie comes up behind you, her arms wrapping around your waist, and her mouth plastering kisses against your neck.
“You look beautiful, baby.” She nips at your neck before turning you around to face her.
You smile at her and wrap your arms around her neck, playing with the hairs on the back of her neck.
“Thank you. Where's the party at tonight again?” She kisses your cheek before pulling away from you.
“Uh, one of my friends' houses.” She shrugs and grabs her keys from the bed.
You hum at her words an uneasy feeling settling in your chest. “Okay.”
It takes a few hours for you to settle in at the party, you lost sight of Cassie a while ago. You're sitting on the stairs nursing an empty cup to yourself.
Looking down at your cup you decide to give yourself a refill, walking towards the kitchen and freezing in the doorway as you catch sight of Cassie with her arm wrapped around another girl's shoulders.
“She is the most insufferable and annoying person you could be with.” Her words come out slurred, a grin crossing her face as all her friends around her laugh.
“How long until you can break it off?” The girl, who has her arm wrapped around asks.
“Oh, not too long, don't worry. That money will be mine.” She leans down to kiss her, her eyes meeting yours over her head.
Tears well up in your eyes as she stops her movements, she quickly removes her arm from the girl and follows after you.
Cassie feels guilt swell up in her chest. Why does she feel bad? She has no reason to, she never truly liked you…Did she?
She stops in front of you at the front of the house. She takes in the tears falling down your face, her mouth opens before closing.
“I- I didn't mean that. Whatever you heard back there-” She points back to the house.
“We’re done, Cassie.” You whisper.
Her eyes widen as she steps towards you, her heart dropping as you step back from her.
“No. You don't- you don't understand.”
“We’re done! I gave you one chance, and you fucked it.” You unclip the golden chain from your neck and throw it at her.
She lazily catches it, her eyes never leaving your body. “Baby…”
You shake your head at her words, feeling more tears beginning to fall.
“I didn't mean to call you that. I- I love you.” She places her hands on your cheeks, not breaking eye contact.
“Then why?” You insisted.
Cassie doesn't respond, her lips press together as she tries to respond.
You let out a chuckle and leave her grasp, walking away and leaving her standing there, staring at the space where you once were.
Cassie turns her eyes down to look at the chain in her hands, letting a tear roll down her cheek.

The sound of knocking on the door brings your attention away from the sandwiches you're making.
“Can you get the door for me, baby?” You turn your head to look behind you, finding Cassie already unlocking the door.
“Auntie Cass!” The joyous voice of your nephew fills the apartment.
“Hey, buddy.” She pulls him up into her arms, resting him on her hip with ease. “How are you?”
“Super good!” He wraps his arms around her neck resting his head on her shoulder.
She chuckles and smiles at your sister. “She’s in the kitchen.” She nods her head towards the kitchen before walking into the living room with the young boy in her arms.
You finish packing the lunch bag and turn around to face your sister. You smile at her and bring her into a hug.
“How’ve you been?” You ask as you pull away from the hug.
“I’ve been good. I can't thank you enough for watching Milo today.” She smiles back at you.
“Please, we've had this day planned ever since you asked us.” You kiss her cheek before pushing her towards the door. “Now go enjoy your day for freedom.”
She rolls her eyes at you before stepping out of the apartment.
You walk back to the living room to find your girlfriend and nephew sitting next to each other playing a game of tic-tac-toe on her phone.
Leaning over the couch, you tap the screen, watching as it lights up blue. You open your mouth in shock before snapping it shut.
Cassie squints at you. “You just made me lose.” Her eyes follow you as you shrug and kneel in front of Milo.
He looks at you with innocent eyes, the kind you would only see in kids his age.
“How does looking at planets and stars sound to you?” You watch as his eyes light up with excitement.
“Really?”
“Really.” He jumps up and hugs you, a laugh exits your mouth as you hug him back. Kissing the side of his head you look at Cassie and mouth. “I think he's excited.”
She laughs and stands up from the couch grabbing her keys from the coffee table and twirling them in her hands. “Well let's get going. I want to get a good parking spot.”
Standing up from your crouched position, you walk back over to the kitchen and grab the packed lunch following them out the door.
__
The museum isn't as full as you expected it to be, with only the occasional family or couple walking past you.
“Look! There's Neptune.” Milo grabs Cassie’s hand and pulls her towards the displayed blue sphere.
She doesn't hold back her smile as she stands next to him, leaning down to read the plaque in front of it.
“Neptune was discovered in 1846 using mathematical predictions and has 14 moons. Did you know that?” She turns back to you and asks teasingly.
You hum at her words. “I did actually. Did you know that Neptune is the only planet that isn't visible to the naked eye?”
Milo narrows his eyes at you. “You read that from over there.” He points towards another plaque, one that just so happens to be placed right in front of where you're standing.
Cassie raises her eyebrows and looks at you fully. “Did she now?” A grin crosses her face.
“Oh look! I think I see Venus!” You quickly point behind them to avoid the question. Milo turns his head so quickly that you fear he might give himself whiplash.
He grabs your girlfriend’s hand and drags her with him to look at the display. You quickly follow after them watching as he excitedly speaks to her.
“Venus is my favourite planet. It's the hottest planet.” He nods his head at his words.
“I thought the hottest was Mars,” Cassie mutters under her breath.
“Mars is not the hottest Auntie Cass.” He sasses back at her, shaking his head at her.
“Yeah, I know that now, genius.” She ruffles his hair.
The three of you continue to walk around the museum, stopping every once in a while so Milo can gush about a planet he really likes, information coming out of his mouth like a waterfall.
Eventually, you come to stop in front of a collection of space helmets that say ‘Try me on!’
Cassie begins. “This is a serious safety hazard. I mean how many kids do you think with illnesses-” She cuts off her words as she watches Milo put a helmet on his head. “Or you know just ignore me and put it on anyway.”
You laugh and pull out your phone, crouching to his level pulling open the camera app. “I don't think he cares about health and safety regulations right now, babe.” You snap a few pictures before reaching over and taking the helmet off his head.
You let out a false gasp. “There’s my handsome boy.” He giggles at your words.
You gesture the helmet towards her, raising your eyebrows in question. “Want a try?”
She blinks at you before taking it and smoothly placing it back onto the stand. “No thank you.”
You wholeheartedly laugh and grab Milo’s hand, moving them away from the area. “How about some food?”
“Depends on what you have.”
“I have a ham sandwich, apple juice and a Snickers waiting for you?” You respond, your words coming out as more of a question than an answer.
He pulls a face in thought before nodding his head. “Sounds good.”
You huff out a laugh. “Alright.”

After some well-deserved lunch, Cassie holds a tired 6-year-old in her hands whilst walking back to the car in a comfortable silence.
“Think he had a good day?” You break the silence as she buckles him into the car, his head lolling against the back of the seat.
“I sure hope so.” She shuts the door and turns to look at you with a soft smile gracing her face.
She enters the driver's side before reversing out of her parking spot. As she drives you can't help but stare at her, your eyes burning with love for her.
Her head turns to look at you. “What?”
“I just-” You lick your lips before turning away from the eye contact. “I love you.”
She hums at your words turning her own eyes back to the road. “I love you too.”
Back at the apartment she gently places him on the spare bed before joining you on the couch. Her arm wraps around your shoulder, and a kiss is pressed against your temple.
Your head falls onto her shoulder, your eyes closing as you let sleep consume you. Cassie’s eyes stay on the TV show playing in front of her, the smile on her face big enough for her dimples to show.

The sound of keys jingling and the door shutting fills the room of your shared apartment. You twist your head to look behind the couch, looking at a very exhausted redhead.
Cassie practically throws herself onto the couch next to you closing her eyes and resting her head back onto the cushions. Your space documentary is faintly playing in the background.
“Long day?” You reach a hand over to run through her messed-up hair, brushing it out of her face.
She lets out a long sigh and turns her head to look at you, staring for a second before speaking. “Do you own anything red?”
“What?” You stare back at her, a confused look coming over your face.
“Do you own anything red?” She repeats the question, bringing her bottom lip into her mouth.
“I mean, yeah. I have that red skirt you bought me not too long ago. Why?” You sit up on the couch, removing your hand from her hair watching as she does the same.
“There’s just- There's this stupid thing at work it's a costume party and- I don't know. I just had this idea that we could go as Gnomeo and Juliet.” She rambles quickly bringing her own hand to run it through her hair.
“Sorry, I just assumed that you wanted to come-” She cuts herself off once she sees the smile spread across your face. “Why are you smiling at me like that?”
“You want to go dressed as Gnomeo and Juliet? The kids' movie that came out in 2011?” You laugh as her cheeks become flushed.
“What's so funny about that?” She reaches over to poke your side.
You continue to laugh as you slap her hand away. “There were no other costumes you could have thought of? Like… Rapunzel and Flynn?”
She tugs you over to sit on her lap, resting her hands softly on your waist. “Well, I was just thinking of simple outfits, I know I own a blue jumper and some black jeans. I just needed to know if you own anything red.”
You rest your hands on her shoulders, looking into her blue eyes, speaking up you ask. “I think I could make us gnome hats, when's the party?”
Cassie moves her hands up and down your waist, watching her hands move before she answers. “Around 7 tomorrow.”
She looks up at you, taking in your facial features. She sighs as she pulls you into a hug, placing her head on your shoulder and kissing it.

6:49pm - Next day
Cassie’s fingers drum against the steering wheel, matching the song playing on the car radio.
The pair of you are early as usual, pulling into the driveway of Dana’s house. Not that it was her idea to have the party, it's just an undisclosed agreement that she hosts considering she has the biggest house.
Cassie sighs as she parks the car, opening her door and rounding to your side to open the door. She grabs the hat from you and places it on top of her head.
“You ready?” She asks as she locks the car, placing her hand into your hand, swinging them slightly.
You chuckle slightly and walk towards the door. “Of course. The real question is, are you?”
She lets out a breath of air and brings her free hand up to ring the doorbell. “Of course I am, baby.”
The door swings open showing Trinity on the other side, sporting a grin on her face. “There’s my favourite Gnomes. Was wondering if you were going to show up!”
She's dressed as one of the Men in Black characters, fairly simple.
You smile at her obviously slight tipsiness and walk past her. “We’re 10 minutes early. How much have you had to drink already?”
Trinity follows behind you, leaving Cassie to close the door behind her and find another person to entertain her for the night.
“Like… two cups.” She shrugs causing you to laugh and grab a water from the side.
“Of what? Straight vodka?” You uncap the bottle and bring it to your lips.
She rolls her eyes and walks away, leaving you chuckling to yourself.

As the night goes on you find yourself finding your way back to your wife talking with Dana.
You kiss her cheek before sitting down on her lap sideways, wrapping an arm around her neck as hers rest around your waist.
Dana smiles at the couple in front of her, taking a sip of her beer. “So whose idea was the matching outfits?”
“I would like to say it was mine, but it was all Cassie's idea. She can be cute when she wants to be.” You adjust the hat on her head before turning back to Dana. “Are you dressed as Mr Bean?”
“Trust me. It wasn't my idea.” She chuckles. “Consider yourself lucky I even dressed up for this, was tempted to just throw on whatever i had.” She pats your shoulder and walks away, most likely to scold someone.
You watch as the older woman walks away. You turn your attention back to Cassie, taking in her tired face.
“You ready to go home?” Playing with the baby hairs on the back of her neck you stand up from her lap and bring her up with you.
She hums and lets you drag her back into the house, biding her goodbyes to her co-workers.
She grabs her car keys and unlocks the car and sits herself down. She turns her head to look at you before leaning over the console and pressing a kiss to your lips. “I love you.”
You smile as she mutters into the kiss, pulling away you press one last kiss to her lips. “I love you too. Now let's head home, yeah?”
She exhales a laugh before sitting herself back down and reversing out of the drive, her hand waving as she meets the eyes of a now clearly drunk Trinity, who’s being guided out of the house by Dennis.

Your eyes shoot open from your lying position. Taking a deep breath, you reach over to your nightstand to check the time.
1:15 Shit.
You place your phone back down and move to sit on the side of the bed, Cassie's arm sliding from your waist.
You jump from the slight movement on your body, bringing a hand to your face you rub your left eye and pull it down your face.
You bring your hand down to the back of your neck and wipe the sweat resting there. You jump slightly at the sound of the pipes running through your floorboards starting.
Cassie groans from behind you, the loss of heat causing her eyes to flutter open. Her eyes catch sight of you hunched over the edge of the bed.
“Everything okay?” Her raspy voice fills the silent room. Her eyes close again, a slow yawn leaving her mouth.
“I- yeah I'm okay. Just-” You shake your head, a slight tremor in your voice. “Go back to sleep, baby.”
Cassie almost immediately wakes herself back up, the sound of your voice shaking enough to worry her.
She props herself back onto her elbows, giving your body a once-over. “Hey, no. What's the matter? Nightmare?”
“Yeah. It's- It’s ridiculous.” Shaking your head again, you stare down at your hands as you wring your fingers together.
Cassie’s heart hurts at the sight of you like this. She moves herself so she's sitting upright, bringing a hand over to pull you into her chest.
You let her and sigh at the feeling of her warmth, listening to the sound of her heartbeat through her t-shirt.
You both sit in silence for a few minutes before she speaks up. “Want to talk about it?”
You shake your head against her chest, causing her to hum and bring her hand up to your hair, brushing her fingers through it soothingly.
“Okay. You don't have to.” She kisses the top of your head. “Maybe next time you’ll dream about me.” She jokes, never stopping her movements through your hair.
You chuckled against her, muttering tiredly. “Sorry for waking you, I know you're up in a few hours.”
She exhales and presses another kiss to your head. “Don’t be sorry, sweetie. Just try and go back to sleep for me.”
You allow your eyes to shut and the sound of Cassie’s heartbeat pulls you back into sleep.
