I honestly think it fits better like that. Grace is a scientist. How do you think he’s going to react to finding either a man who’s either partly or fully mutated? In any way you want. A fish like creature, a tree, into the blood itself. Scientific curiosity and wonder quickly walking and eventually jumping the line into biblical worship

This is true of the manga, but I love how the anime accentuates the absolute physical trust the apprentices have with Qifrey. Specifically with Agott, the way she is so ready when Qifrey says “hang on tight, I need my hands free” to cling to him a mile into the sky, and then in the latest episode, how, as soon as she impacts Qifrey while flying to him, she makes no move to save herself, she just curls into him and trusts that he will keep them from falling.

And I think it works as a signal to the audience, to subtly go “hey, I know we don’t trust Qifrey right now, he’s being shady, but we can always trust him to protect the physical wellbeing of his kids. Remember that.” Idk man maybe I’m getting too attached to a teeny detail but aaaaaaghhhh that’s her dad.

Actually no, scratch that. I know why. I’m like 90% it’s racism + heteronormative dynamics

It’s not all of art/fics, but it’s definitely some of them. Simon DOES have anger issues and he does have violent tendencies, B U T he’s also so much more than that. He’s shown throughout the entire movie to be clever, determined, and hopeful. In fact I’d argue his most obvious personality trait IS his determination, we see that waaaay more than his anger during the film.

I can probably go more in depth for this is people want. Rn I’m just getting it off my chest. It feels weird to me how some ppl are characterizing Simon. Because like…yes. It is that serious

Really interesting post. I think making characters one dimensional is never a great thing, but as an Asian person, "brute" is not really one of our stereotypes. In fact, Simon as a character kind of subverts a lot of (Western) ideas about how Asian people "naturally are".

To me, there is something refreshing about the way Simon gets to lash out. That he's the "soldier" half in a couple that isn't two Asian characters. I think it would be different if Simon wasn't Asian, and I can't speak on that with any authority, but as an Asian person who knows the way East Asian men are portrayed in Western fandom, it is a breath of fresh air.

Of course, one dimensional characters can be exhausting, and it's another thing if we're thinking of Simon being one dimensional as opposed to Grace having a rich internal world, but just wanted to add my two cents on Simon being protrayed as a "brute" and racism, because I feel like it is important to point out that while this applies to interracial ships that include other races, it isn't really something that applies to East Asians. Which I guess can go into how looking at racism isn't a one size fits all because different groups of people experience different types of racism.

Segue, but still in the realm or fandom and racism: I am noticing a small trend wherein we as a fandom really assign divinity towards Grace's blonde hair and blue eyes. I can see why from the perspective that hey, this is a recessive trait that will become rare in a world with only a few thousand people, but I think THIS is something we need to really tread carefully about because if you write Simon thinking these thoughts I think it's important that it should be addressed at some point that it's not reality, because otherwise your fic jjst said "angels have blonde hair and blue eyes and filthy humans don't" and we uh. Should be careful about that.

That’s also why I felt not a lot of people (from what I’ve seen) seem to not notice or take problem with it. Since it’s not a stereotype heavily associated with East Asian characters then it might not be something that comes to mind. I just felt it was weird that, out of the two characters, the only one they’re exaggerating and hyper-sexualizing is the man of color.

I’m not Asian myself, so at the end of the day I can’t speak on this topic in depth. It was just something that rubbed me the wrong way

It can’t just stay in the tags how genuinely … gentle. He doesn’t take up space, in a tiny sub he manages to make it to the other side in as many steps possible, he sits on the floor crisscross fucking applesauce. HE APOLOGIZES TO INANIMATE OBJECTS WHEN HE’S ALONE IN A SUB AT THE BOTTOM OF THE OCEAN. When he realizes he’s yelling at someone, when HE’S yelled at, he quiets down. He has breathing exercises he uses consistently and effectively through the entire movie. When he finds the pendant he literally cradles it. His go-to comfort object is a HOLSTER, not a KNIFE, from his MOTHER. That he brushes with his thumb.

Yet when you pair him with the smol sad white space boi, he becomes a sex crazed anger-driven maniac? Anger seems to be how he’s had to learn to hone his emotions to save his own life, and he doesn’t seem to fucking like it!!!

But he’s a dangerous brutal Person Of Color. And like the tags I’ll copy; making him darker rides a fine fucking line between personal head-canon and “I don’t care what POC he is. In fact, the more aggressive he is, the darker he should be.”

And yes. It quite literally is that deep; it’s blatant egregious racism. At its best, it’s some fucked up deep seated undetected who-gives-a-fuck bias that you guys need to be aware of IMMEDIATELY…

Just watched PHM (Project Hail Mary) for the first time to see why everyone kept flooding the Iron lung tag with it.

I see the parallels

I keep seeing all these cross overs where they either put Simon into Grace’s universe or the other way around. But I can’t stop thinking about the horrific implications if they were from the same universe.

Because that would mean Simon was right.

Picture it for me. Earth sees that the sun is dying. The stars are dying. So they send humans up to see if they can survive other planets. See if maybe they can flee, before trying to fix literal space.

And it seems to be going well enough. They can live. They build communities.

And then nothing.

It all disappears. Tens of thousands of people, just gone. No trace, no warning.

It’s safer to try and fix it, they decide.

“Y’know…no one on Eden wants to think this way, but what’s more likely? That every planet and star disappeared, of that a few space stations disappeared? Isn’t it easier to believe that they’re still there wondering where all of us went? Isn’t that more likely?”
