Stardew Valley Heated Rivalry Au

guys im so aaaaaaahhhh about this like i need a fanfic of this or i should make more mini comics idkkidkk (more au yapping below)

i followed heated rivalry's process in making logos by making the team logos based on who gives and takes 🤧

but also Stardew Pelicans, obviously a pelican, but the wings also are meant to represent the valley. was debating for Sebastian originally playing for Grampleton, and make Stardew Pelican the equivalent to the Ottawa Centaurs that Alex can transfer later uwu.

Zuzu Tunellers is a drill just bc. Headcanon time, Zuzu City used to be an old mining town back in its historical days, so you find a lot of intricate tunnels underneath the city Uwu

while i normally ship maru and penny together, i think sampenny perfectly fits in this au with sam as hayden lol. him having like four tiny vincents while sebastian is going through a decade long situationship

i made shane kip bc i think that’d be neato. was also thinking maybe Shane used to be into hockey when he was younger but probably lost interest when other stuff basically crash landed on him, Elliott becoming a regular at Gus’s Smoothie Bar basically made him rediscover his lost love for the sport :D

A lot of people view the Demetrius-Sebastian-Robin-Maru dynamic as way more black-and-white than it is. I had an *actually* abusive stepfather and a mom who followed his lead while my little sibling was the favorite; I have a different but similar experience to Sebastian. Demetrius's ignoring Sebastian is bad stepfather behavior. Demetrius's weirdness around Maru's relationship with the farmer is a complicated subject born of the way he does on her blatantly, and can be bad, but he does experience an arch to get over it. The way Robin worries about Sebastian says to me that she is not as implicit in the neglect Sebastian experienced as a child as people may assume, but just because she was there for him does not mean Demetrius's lack of concern didn't affect him. You can also see that Robin and Demetrius's marriage isn't super smooth; during the green rain she's worried about his safety and angry that he's disregarding her worry, for the bed cutscene he's derisive of her art when he's been married to her a minimum of 18 years (assuming Maru is at least 18), and the fight over the tomatoes (also hotly contested among fans) seems to imply that their marriage is a little rocky. Reading between the lines we can maybe infer that the way Demetrius ignores Sebastian may also be a cause for stress between them. I'm not saying Demetrius is abusive or a bad father, it's certainly a subject open to interpretation, but he's not, like... completely innocent and sweet. He's meant to be the dorky clueless need stereotype, but those characters tend to be younger characters for a reason—the lack of emotional intelligence is easier to swallow on a character who is not fully developed than a character who is an adult man and has been partially responsible for the development of two dependents—once of whom is vocal about how he's failed in that role. Being an adult, he now comes across as an autistic stereotype; as an autistic person myself, I find him an unflattering one, as even I have more situational awareness than he has.

We can take the tomato scene as a representation of this in the miniature. Robin is upset because she asked Demetrius to by fruit, and Demetrius is confused because tomatoes are fruit. When he asks the Farmer for their opinion, the farmer can respond by saying tomatoes are either a fruit or a vegetable. If you answer a fruit, the correct scientific answer, he is pleased. However, "vegetable" is a purely culinary classification, not a scientific one—which you would expect Demetrius to know, as he clearly studies the flora and fauna of the Pelican Town as his job. If you then respond "vegetable", because Robin was clearly speaking in a culinary sense, his response of expecting a farmer to be more knowledgeable paints him as pompous and ignorant—though we can read between the lines and again see that this is because of ConcernedApe's passing knowledge on the subject than because of any true ignorance on Demetrius's part. There is no concrete impression we're meant to be left with. Every statement made comes with an asterisk to allow to the nuance and room for interpretation that comes with every part of the whole family's dynamic.

To circle back to the beginning: I no longer speak to my stepfather, but I do speak to my mother. Despite the harm she was complicit in, I acknowledge the nuance in the subject and chose to still engage with her on my own terms. I have repaired my relationship with my sibling, and we’re in fact roommates now. Therefore, in my personal headcanon for Sebastian, is when he moves out he still speaks to Robin and chooses to make amends with Maru, but tries to engage with Demetrius as little as possible (though, given Demetrius's 0 lines of dialogue concerning Sebastian, I can't imagine he'll make it hard for Sebastian to avoid him). This does not put Demetrius on the same level as my stepfather; Demetrius is a far better person than he was, and his hurt inflicted on Sebastian likely does not come from a place of malice. It's just really not as simple of a scenario as so many people want to brush it off as. There is room for people to Dislike Demetrius but not Robin, there's room for people to dislike both, there's likely even room for people to dislike Robin nore than Demetrius—maybe to some, her concern feels false, and that makes her worse than Demetrius not even pretending to care for the lie inherent in that interpretation. But people who say "You should feel this way if you feel this way" are fundamentally incorrect. There's simply too much room for interpretation to have a conclusive black-and-white idea of the situation.
