Barryâs choices - An analysis of the fight between Barry and Iris in 5x19
Iâm still not over the fact that the fight between Barry and Iris in 5x19 is actually canon. At first, I was spinning from the whole Iris not caring that Thawne murdered Barryâs mother (and I still am) but recently, Iâve been thinking a lot about Iris blaming Barry for his choices. So again, how is this scene canon?
When way back at the beginning of season 4, Iris told Barry âYou left me, Barry. You just left me. Standing there, alone.â I was aghast because it was such a selfish thing to say since we know that âhe had to goâ and she wasnât actually the one alone in this scenario. On top of it, she chose a moment to explode with her feelings where Barry couldnât respond to it since he has to hide his identity and therefore his motivations for his choice from the therapist. But ignoring the setting and the way Iris expressed her feelings, I can understand that she has these emotions. After Eddie dying to stop Thawne and Barry leaving to save the world, add that to finding out her mother didnât die but left her, yes, I understand that she has these feelings, this fear of abandonment.
Unfortunately, those feelings were never really resolved, they just turned it around and made it about Barry not asking Iris for her opinion on his choice and how they are in it together ( âWe are the Flashâ *sigh*). Instead, they could have actually had some kind of character development for Iris, like have her be the one who has to make the choice to save others, or something. (It reminds me of an episode of Charmed, where at the beginning of the episode, when asked if they would save one sister or 5 strangers, they confidently choose a sister, but at the end of the episode, because of what they went through, they know they would choose to save the strangers, because itâs their job to save the innocent). But alas, these feelings were never dealt with, which then brings us to Barryâs trial.
Now, when the lawyer wonders about Barryâs reasons for his six monthâs absence, Iris says âIs saving the world a good reason?â Without any character development to support her change of heart, this, of course, sounds hollow and hypocritic. They could have used Barryâs trial and him making the choice to go to prison and âleavingâ Iris again to show some actual character development on her part, but the writers ignored that opportunity. Now we could assume that she actually did deal with her feelings and is now able to defend (and accept) Barryâs choice instead of blaming him for it. (Not a great choice to have character development happen off-screen, but possible), alas at the end of season 5, this scene happens.
Barry takes Nora back to the future and once again, Iris blames him for his choices, actually saying â⊠Going to the Speed Force and leaving me? Were you right those times too?â This just shows us that after a year and a half, she still hasnât dealt with her feelings (making the trial scene even more hypocritic), she still thinks he made the wrong choice to go into the speed force (and save the world). How can she be with him and not agree with, or at least understand, his choices, but actually resent him for them? Especially since, apart from Flashpoint, he actually makes good choices (except when it comes to his relationships with his friends, but those donât affect Iris). As for Flashpoint, I still believe, that his conversation with Iris, her inability to help him, and his emotions for her and wanting to be what she wants him to be, were the catalyst to that decision.
Since Iris real emotions were never dealt with, itâs now all about Barryâs choices. She doesnât think he makes the right choices, so she wants to control them and in doing so, make sure that he canât /wonât hurt her again. And though I can, again, see where she is coming from deep down, still afraid of being left alone, never having dealt with her fear of abandonment, never having accepted that part of Barryâs life or Barry himself; just look at what she has become after Barry vanishes in the crisis (probably without her consent); they are now stuck in a toxic relationship. Iris, wanting to control Barryâs choices, has now made him doubt himself to the degree where he barely makes his own decisions, always waiting for her, or occasionally some other team member, to decide on the next step, asking variations of âwhat are we going to do?â way more often, and becoming a worse hero that he was in season 1 and 2, for example being unable to phase through poison until Iris tells him to, unable to save Caitlinâs mother without Iris in his ear, frozen, petrified to make the âwrongâ choice.
So again, especially after the season finale, I wonder how this can be canon? And WA still a thing? Even the âgold standardâ? Â How can the writers SHOW us how toxic that relationship is and still TELL us that they are âmeant to beâ? And how can this have been going on for 3 seasons?

Imagine Barry dressing up as Green Arrow on Halloween
At that moment, Barry walks in dressed in the green arrow suit. Caitlinâs eyes go wide as she takes in his appearance. Before she can stop it, Frostâs cold voice comes out of her mouth. âHot damn!âÂ
Blushing profusely, she presses her lips together, not wanting Frost to embarrass her even more. Barry looks up at her, surprised when he hears Killer Frostâs voice, then seeing her blush, he just grins awkwardly.Â
âI know I donât fill it up as good as Oliver,â he concedes.Â
âYou fill it up very nicely.âÂ
The words were out of her mouth once again before she could stop herself because this time it was definitely Caitlin and not Frost. She really didnât think she could blush even more, but darn it, she has seen Barry in a lot of outfits and itâs not like the Flash suit is hiding anything, but seeing him in this suit makes her tingly in all the right places.Â
Still a little embarrassed and self-conscious, Barry replies. âThanks, but have you seen Oliverâs arms, I mean, I must look like a stick next to him.âÂ
âA very hot stick.âÂ
Caitlin curses herself on the inside, this has to stop, she canât go drooling over Barry and being this obvious about it. Good thing Cisco isnât here, he would never let her live that down. She takes a deep breath, trying to calm her nerves, and slowly glances back up at Barry, who is just grinning at her at this point.Â
âAll Iâm saying, Barry, is that you donât need to worry or feel self-conscious, honestly, you pull this off better than Oliver.âÂ
Weirdly enough that is the comment that makes him blush
