ok IT HAPPENS IN 11x11 INTO THE MYSTIC BUT BEFORE I GET TO THE EXACT MOMENT. context:

1. casifer hand-on-shoulder. intimate moment ALL the crueler because we know it’s a deception. also this comes right on the heels of dean admitting that he has “a connection” with amara—he is evaluating what “attraction” means because he is desperately hoping he is NOT attracted to god’s evil sister. this means he has to think about what attraction DOES mean to him.

2. dean gets targeted by the banshee (because he is vulnerable. yes he WILL obsessively analyze what the shit that means)

3. mildred can tell he’s “pining” and tells him to “follow his heart”

in this episode dean has confronted 1) “cas” out of his jacket and also touching him 2) the definition of attraction 3) the fact that he has been targeted on account of some kind of vulnerability 4) the fact that he is Very Obviously romantically pining for somebody (who we KNOW is not amara, based on writer input). dean is THINKING. man is RUMINATING. keep that in mind here comes the pinpoint

oh sickening. whatever he is realizing (insert eggplant emoji) led directly to this face. which i cannot name but it’s the same face i make whenever i think about MY life too hard. maybe i will call it Dawning Reality. SICKENING he is sickened and i am also sickened

and then for the final shot of the episode we get...slow zoom on his face...his staunch american man face....cut up and bruised and all alone in the darkness. he is VULNERABLE he is HAVING A MOMENT he is considering the fact that angels don’t have the equipment to care and that whenever they try they break apart.

please let me stress how absolutely long and devoid of any other focus this scene is. we are watching his epiphany and his reaction to WHAT? to what he has been percolating on all day. someone pointing out how heartsick he is (NOT for amara) the way he feels around amara (NOT attraction) so what is his epiphany? what is he so conflicted over? he’s figured it out. connections attraction pining following his heart. the way he feels around cas. the way he feels about cas. he can’t follow his FUCKING heart

bullet ONE dean will 1) hide his worry from sam. big brother instinct. 2) WORRY so hard. he is so worried all the time please you see this guy (COSMIC ENTITY) after a while (FEW DAYS) and you greet him with grumpiness because what else are you supposed to say? you miss him?

BULLET TWO another piece of the puzzle falls into place. how come dean knows cas better than sam? theyve known each other the same amount of time. open concern about him....but not too open. not TOO vulnerable. mr thompson....

same scene TKO. dean brushing aside the idea of weakness per fuckin usual....yeah ok why is he sitting up late at night and pulling his hair then. “overthinking it” says the ceo of overthinking things

they really did the cas/colette parallels huh. like they looked us in the eye and said "cas is to dean what colette is to cain (his wife.) this means nothing."

The reason SPN is both quintessentially queer and quintessentially homophobic is because it’s a straight man’s fanfiction of a queer text. That’s really it. It’s a straight man seeing the isolation and liminality and impermanence of queer life in the mid-20th century as told in On The Road and romanticizing it, and wanting to claim it for himself.

Which of course doesn’t work, because in positioning his main characters as protectors of the middle American heterosexual nuclear family, he has already fundamentally misunderstood them. Their very existence is something middle America views as a threat, and middle America is to these characters a trap, a prison, a slow death rather than a quick one for which they nevertheless yearn because we are all taught to do so. (Perhaps what they truly yearn for is to want that life, but I digress.)

The American road story, the drifter’s story, is a queer story. It is not compatible with the white picket fence, in fact the white picket fence’s primary purpose is to shut it out. The white picket fence is a symbol of stability, comfort, prosperity (conformity, stagnation). The road, on the other hand, is a symbol of upset, disquiet, transience (freedom, transformation). Adventure and uncertainty are the cornerstones of the road story. It simply makes no goddamn sense to take characters from the road story and position them as protectors of the middle American nuclear family when their very existence is positioned as a threat within the cultural context of middle America.
