A girl child is not safe in my community -this much I have come to learn. It is a sad thing to say out loud but it is the truth I cannot hide. This initiative I have take - to air out gender oppression happening in the community we live in - has taken me places: I met with many women and young girls who face the worst kinds of humiliation daily and their stories are dark but they end up being just stories. Most of them have no confidence to report the cruel acts; most of them don't speak about the violence because telling others is "taboo"; most of them find the humiliation as part of life and that whether they report it or not there's nothing that will change; most of them don't want their stories shared because it is their struggle alone. This initiative I have take - to air out the importance of Sexual Reproductive Health in the community we live in - has make me understand the necessity of SRH to young girls and young boys in the community. I have learn that to most Tanzanian families SRH is an elephant in the room. Parents don't teach or speak to their children about it because "it is not right", " we just don't speak about it in our family", "its not our tradition". Women don't want to hear about SRH or family planning because "my husband doesn't want to hear about contraceptives ", "it doesn't help me in any way". Young boys and girls don't even go to ask about SRH at hospitals or health centers. How can we prevent school girls from early pregnancies which mark and end to their academic lives? How can we prevent young boys and girls from STDs and STIs? How can we preach family planning to adults who never heard of SRH as they were growing up? Its the 21st century but we still have a long way to go to. Gender oppression, early marriage, early pregnancies, domestic abuse, sexual abuse, financial abuse (etc) are " inherited" generation to generation in my community.

I never stayed in the same place for long. And my mother grew so angry with me. It ruined our relationship. I had been helping her raise my siblings, so she thought I was abandoning my responsibilities. Even today she doesn’t know why I ran away. I haven’t even told my husband about this. But what does it matter anymore? I’m older now. And my stepfather’s dead.” (Manila, Philippines)

PART 2: -"... I got a job as a housemaid to an Indian family here in Dar. I used the salary I got to take my child to nursery school. In 2016 my friend and I were approached by an agent who connected us to go work as housemaids at Pakistan with a promise of a good salary. At Pakistan we were taken to a family of a married couple living with their children and relatives. On the first day, the bosses took our passports saying they are going to take copies for documentation purposes but they didn't give them back to us. We worked there for 1 and a half years under very hard conditions: the bosses were alcoholic so they were very abusive; the only food we were allowed to eat were leftovers from days back; we were not allowed to step foot outside the house compound; when we asked for our salaries they said since we didn't go outside we had no expenses so they were holding the money for us. We later on acknowledged the fact that all that work was for nothing so we got on a hunger strike demanding to be returned back to Tanzania. When they saw that we were serious they took us to the airport, gave us our passports, air tickets and we came back. They didn't pay us a single rupee while we were to be paid approximately Tshs. 2 millions each; and since we have no written contract to support our claim, our right is lost. I now work as a dancer in a local dance group. The little I get is for food and taking my child to school. She is in primary school now. My life is very hard. I am trying hard to make sure my child doesn't stop at primary level like I did. I am a great cook so if I can get capital I will be able to start a business selling food. I blame my mother for how my life turned out, but one thing is for sure I am happy as a single mother." (-Mama Aisha, Dar es Salaam)

PART 1: -"I finished school at the age of 14. I loved studying and I used to get good grades. One day when I was in grade 7 one of our neighbours, a woman, came to our home and told my mother that she wants her 33 years old son to marry me. That day when I got back home my mother told me what the woman said and that I should accept her offer. I refused because I wanted to study and not get married at such a young age. My mother told me "just accept this offer, it will not come again, plus I cannot spend my money to educate a girl who will not pass to go to secondary school". I was hurt and ran to my father; he shouted at my mother and encouraged me to keep studying. When grade 7 NECTA results were issued, I passed to go to secondary school but since we were a poor family, my father's efforts alone were not enough to get me school fees and other necessities; so it was the end of school for me. I ended up marrying the 33 years old man when I was 15 years old. Ten months later I got a baby girl. The man was very abusive; he would leave Tshs. 200 for food knowing that it was not enough. I grew some vegetables for food and to sell in order to buy soap and maize flour for porridge. I grew tires of that life and asked for divorce. When he gave it to me, I went back to my parents' house. Because I am a Muslim woman, my mother said that the first divorce is not really a divorce so she tore the divorce papers and dragged me back to " my husband's" house. There I asked for another divorce and he gave gave me 2 more. This time I took my baby and went to live with my sister. ...." (-Mama Aisha, Dar es Salaam)

-"I am a Tanzanian with an Indian origin. I am currently undertaking my bachelor degree course at a University in Dar es Salaam. I have a large circle of friends both black Tanzanians and ones with Indian origin. Few weeks back I uploaded a picture of my male classmate as my WhatsApp profile picture, as a way to wish him a happy birthday. When one of my 'Indian' friends saw the picture, she went around asking NY family, siblings, other Indian' friends "-Why I had a picture of "a Black guy" on my dp?, was my phone hacked or stolen?" This came as a shock to me because her questions were out right racist to me. She wants me to only associate myself with people who are "white" or fellow "Indians" and not otherwise. Be it a fact that Tanzania is an African country, one cannot expect me to be surrounded by only people of my origin under any circumstance. I am not one to tolerate racism, not from my family or friends. Because of that I lost a girlfriend and I don't regret it. I am Tanzanian." (-Ruu, Dar es Salaam) #internationalantiracismday

It is essential for African women and young people to be educated on Sexual Reproductive Health. We need to break the norm that such "things" are not to be spoken out in public or taught to young children, especially girls. Lack of SRH is among the factors which contribute to early pregnancies and end of academic life to a lot of girls in Tanzania.' ->>no SRH ->> early pregnancies ->> end of academic life ->> illiterate generation' Young people need to be reminded about the 'ABC's: Abstain - Be faithful - use Condom. HIV/Aids is still a dangerous disease that is largely transmitted sexually. Also, there are many STDs and STIs which face the young generation and grown women. To be frank and open, most girls in Tanzania finish grade 7 around the age of adolescence which is the age where most boys and girls like experimenting their sexual desires and this is the age where most girls end up with early pregnancies which result to the end of their academic lives. Break the silence, educate African women, young boys and girls on #sexualreproductivehealth

-"I have a problem with my legs, they get so weak and painful. Most days I cannot walk because they get numb; it's like I'm paralyzed from thighs down. On the few days when I am able to walk, it's very painful. My husband and children deserted me because of my sickness. Few weeks ago I went to the hospital for treatment but I was not allowed to even see the doctor because I have no money to pay for hospital services. I was told to seek contribution from people then go back with money to see the doctor and maybe then i will get treatment. So I went to my local government office for help. They gave me an identification letter stating my name and where I live so that people will not think I am a fraudster when I go from house to house begging for hospital money. Also the letter helps people to know where i live in order to take me back home when I cannot walk due to the severe legs pain or numbness. On those few days where I can manage to drag myself from one house to another the money I get is not enough for treatment but also I deduct some amount to buy food." (-Aunty Mwana)

At some point she had to comfort me, as I was sobbing after listening to the details of the merciless attack. Her faith in God kept her going. She said, “I would like to pray for both of us. You see, I am hunted down by witchdoctors for my organs! You are hunted down by witchdoctors for exposing their involvement in the macabre killings of persons with albinism! We must be twins!” I could hear a very soft laughter at the end of the line! After that she prayed for both of us and for persons with albinism. What an amazing woman! She became my special and unique “twin”! Via the initiatives of the US ABC News 24, Mariamu got her first functioning prosthetic arms in Washington DC. ABC News and the Amarican people did not leave Mariamu behind! “The first thing I would do is to with my new arms, is to embrace and hold by son, Niomongele Elisha,” she told her new American friends and sponsors. Back in Tanzania, she was enrolled into Under The Same Sun Education Programme. UTSS does not leave any woman behind! She went to a Vocational Training Institution and graduated with an Advanced Certificate in Knitting and Sewing. Mariamu knits sweaters / jumpers, scarves, dresses and many other items to order. Today Mariamu Staford, a mother of a twelve-year old by is telling the world that her disability is not inability and that she can do anything, including conquering the Kilimanjaro if she puts her mind to it!
