“Well well well…what do we have here.” The tree had come uprooted during some of the salvage and lumber operations taking place at the edge of 12s new boundaries. It had been a routine job…until someone spotted the grey metal case hidden under its roots. 

Deejay knew what it was even before he cracked it open with a crowbar and unsealed the top, revealing row after row of shiny white assault rifles. F2000s. Peacekeeper guns.  “JACKPOT.” To the person beside him he asked “You know how much these’re worth right now?”

Peeta glances at the other boy unsure of what he was even talking about, there was very little he knew about technology but he knew the other boy loved everything that had to do with it.

“What is that?” he asks unsure of what to say.

“Thank you. He is the most precious thing that ever belonged to me. Exept for Finnick.” A soft smile graced her lips at the thought. How gifted she was, despite the Annie cruelty they had been through. She had even thought about asking Peeta if he wanted to take care of Noah sometime, knowing it would do him good to spend some time with the child.

Annie knew what he meant, and she felt the same. “I like to believe that this is why most of the people decided to return to their Districts. I myself don’t think I could have stand it. Not after all…“ Her mind drifted to other things for a brief moment before she focused on him again, placing a hand over his. “We are okay, and that is… good. People don’t need to understand.”

Peeta smiles fondly at his friend knowing she had a rough year, it couldn’t be easy to lose all she had already lost and then almost lose the thing that mattered most. Lucky for her she had come out on the other side with both her husband and the baby. “You deserve it annie, that and so much more”

“I dont really most people to understand me, I don’t expect them to. I was a monster there for a minute and even if I am working hard now its something most people don’t forget. I just want to be useful where I can be.”

“Can do, boss. You made the cake? Coin insisted one of her friends in thirteen had a daughter who was an excellent baker. I thanked her for it for everything but I’m not surprised she lied about even such a small thing as that. Thank you friend~ “ He squeezed Peeta’ s shoulder affectionately. “So are you going to hire staff for this place?”

Peeta laughs at the comment shaking his head. “Well I wasn’t exactly allowed to be out with the rest of you and it was Prim’s idea actually, she thought it might help. I was guarded the whole time as if I was about to murder someone with a spoon.” he chuckles darkly. “I am actually, Madge is coming to work with me on monday. So I am excited”

katniss bit her lip as she jogged down the stairs of her home, tucking her dark curls up into a cap, which she lowered as much as possible. she’d managed to find the drabbiest looking outfit in her capitol-styled closet, a pair of grey overalls with a black long-sleeved shirt underneath, in order to look the part. no way anyone would recognize her; if they didn’t pay attention, that was. she needed to know what it was like to be a part of the district, not just sit back and watch everyone else. as she kept her head ducked down and hurried through the victor’s village, she grunted as she suddenly ran into someone, hiding her face even more. “sorry,” she muttered in a voice disguised to sound unlike her own, and tried to keep walking.

Peeta had been heading out early, bakery hours were always extra hard in the winter and it was still dark out, as he was getting ready to leave he glanced over at Katniss house unsure if he should say anything at all. They hadn’t talked in two days over a fight he still didn’t understand and being away from her was draining and difficult. He pulls his coat closer walking slowly before someone bumps into him. He stumbles slightly on his prosthetic but recovers quickly enough. “It’s ok” he mumbles about to walk away before he recognizes the almost indistinguishable figure before him. “Katniss??”

katniss hesitated for a moment but kept on her cold expression as she roughly shoved the dishes in the dishwasher. “fine,” she mumbled.

“Goodnight Katniss” he mutters trying to ignore the tug at the pit of his stomach as he heads towards the door, closing it softly behind him.

“Sure thing! I’m so proud for you dude. Katniss and I were just talking in front this place like days ago and now it’s your bakery all open and ready to go. I think I’ll even give you the honors of making Noah’ s first birthday cake. And just about everyone after it.” He joked in return. Rolling up his sweater sleeves and grabbing a spare apron. “Where should I start?” He asks will wash his hands.

Peeta laughs as he puts the pie down in the cooling rack heading over to open one of the large ovens shaking his head. “Well I would hope I would be allowed to make his cake considering how much you all seemed to love your wedding cake.” he hands Finnick mitts and motions for the cookie sheets, “Pull those out and allow them to cool, then peel them off and start stocking the display.”

“i’m not mad, i’m just sick of you treating me like i’m about to keel over and die any day now,” katniss muttered as she began cleaning up the kitchen.

“What the hell Katniss..” he mumbles before shaking his head truly hurt by her words “Honestly if this is what you think then I will back off, I can leave you alone just fine.” he murmurs already turning his back. “I can.. sleep in my own room tonight,”

“look, i’m not drunk,” katniss honestly said, though her words were slurring a bit. “i just had a drink, calm down.”

“I’m plenty calm, it simply that I am the one who ends up cleaning after the mess when you decide to drink, but yeah go ahead be mad at me for a reason you refuse to explain.”

“no!” katniss whined in annoyance and stepped back. “leave me alone.”

“Oh so now I am the bad guy?” he shakes his head. “Really Katniss..”

“Are you drunk?” his voice is low but not exactly calm.

“Well think again, dough boy.”, with another sip of her coffee, Lava allowed the warm drink to soothe her taste buds. The warmth spreading in her chest as she swallowed it down. She turned down the sass a notch for a serious comment passed as casual conversation. “Besides there’s not much good, much less about mornings. You of all people should know that much.”

Peeta laughs holding the cup to his lip to hide his amusement, while the other woman was undeniably someone to be feared he had learned long ago with Katniss that there was always more to be found. “On he contrary, I like morning, its usually the nights that bring the worse of it.” he said it lightly but it was true, morning at least brought relief from the nightmares.

Back to Basics ❦ Everlark

katniss smiled as he did, just staring at him in awe, and realizing there must be some sort of higher power if people could be made this perfect. but then… “oh,” she whispered with a slight chuckle and tilted her head down for a moment before meeting his eyes again, and smiling slowly once more. he really did love her, that much was obvious. so she took it. “i believe you.”

she pecked him once more before going back to her seat and placing her napkin in her lap, excited to eat her favorite meal. “i still can’t believe that you did all this just for us,” she chuckled softly in appreciation and gently took her glass of water (no alcohol, of course), then held it up in a toast to him. “thank you for coming back into my life. again. and for giving me one worth living. i love you, peeta mellark.”

Peeta could feel the love for her swelling in his chest, of course he would do all of this for her, he would do this and so much more, it was strange to think of a life where he wouldn’t give her just about anything she wanted, it was simply the way he was. 

He picks up his own glass toasting with her, “thank you for making every day better Katniss, for making me happier and accepting me the way I am, helping me become a better man and a better person, I owe you so much and I hope to make you happy for the rest of this life. I love you”

“But at least you’re getting there, right?” Effie grinned. “He didn’t tell you either? Why am I not surprised?” She sighed in exasperation. “I came with Haymitch, we’re together and I’m now living with him.”

“Its a slow process but its a process none the less.” he smiles sadly “Oh.. OH.” Peeta chuckle slightly surprised and embarrassed. “Oh of course, I mean.. you two always” he clears his throat unsure what to say. “Makes sense.”

Lava held up a hand before the other could speak. It was very early in the morning.  “I understand how me standing in a public space like a kitchen may seem like an invitation for conversation, but really I’m just trying to enjoy my coffee and the solitude of a kitchen at this hour before it’s ruined tomorrow by Thanksgiving.”, she spat the holiday’s name like a mouth full of venom. “But look, here we are. Talking.”

Peeta holds back a laugh at the hostility of the other woman, in all honesty he was fine with silence but this one wasn’t particularly comfortable. “Well with all honesty there is no need to be so hostile. I can have coffee in silence as well but I didn’t think a simple good morning was too much.”

Annie chuckled a bit at the thought of their children playing together. It would be adorable for sure, and Noah could really need some friends around. “They could, yes. He would like if you visited again, Noah really likes you a lot. And it is nice to have you around.” She was always honest but even more so around him who has become a dear friend to her. Someone she could rely on.

“Our normal will always be different from the normal of others.” Annie had accepted that a long time ago. She would never really be as normal as others would be, but it was fine. At least she tried. “It feels good to be around people that I know and who accept me. It helps me getting better.”

“I will be sure to come by then, soon.” he smiles. “Honestly kids were always my favorite, they are a lot more honest than most people, and your son is simply adorable” he states honestly, beyond the fact that they were friends it was true, Noah was a beautiful baby boy.

Peeta knew exactly what she meant, it was hard to pretend, hard to fake it and try so hard to seem put together, it was much easier to be around her, someone who knew him in a darker sense yet knew he wasn’t about to snap. “I know what you mean. Its why I didn’t stay in the capitol.. everyone thinks we are..” he stops shaking his head. “I am glad to be back.”
