This is my favorite part. The decision has been made and for better or for worse the piece is finished. All the anxiety and second guessing dissipates, the fear that you got lucky with the last one the overwhelming feeling of imposter and fraud are quieted. The excitement now takes over as the work finally reveals itself. Tape lines so sharp you can cut yourself if your careless. Prepping two more canvases. I start with pre-primed canvas sheets and lay down a border. I began painting this way should I ever decide to stretch them later I would have the option but it also slows me to paint right up to the edge with reckless abandon. I used to be to aware of the edges when painting on a stretched canvas and it was apparent in my gestures and composition. In this way each piece feels like a section of a larger greater work, hopefully leaving the viewer wanting to know what was beyond the border. I add another layer of gesso to eliminate the defined borders and to prevent any blowout when I use my inks and water.
