We all deal with our periods in our own way. So please feel free to weigh in: how comfortable are you about discussing it casually? I find there are a lot women who feel the need to hide it completely, they pretend it doesn't exist at all, who will hide a tampon in their shoe or double bag a box of tampons so they don't have to be seen buying them. Then there are women who are in the extreme opposite--think, artists who photograph their menses, or dress in giant vagina costumes, etc... And then there are those of us who fall somewhere in the middle. For example, I can talk about it like any other normal bodily function on a public forum or in day to day conversation, but I'm not holding a monthly lunar ceremony or anything either. Where do you fall on that line? And most importantly what do you think drives you to behave one way or another in relation to this lovely facet of womanhood? Men need not interject. ✋️😐

Heyyyy, long time no see!

A LOT has happened since I last checked in, so just to break it down real quick:

1) We’re engaged now. (!!!) 2) My mom turned 70, and retired (finally) 3) My sister married that super religious guy, but they seem happy 4) It looks like we may be moving back to California this summer 5) It also looks like we may have an investor for BK 6) I’m ready to nest and maybe pop out a baby. 7) The current political climate makes me want to stab myself in the eye

My dad’s birthday is today.

It feels weird wishing him a happy birthday and saying I love you and such when for majority of my years our relationship has been extremely turbulent. The peace feels... unsettling. I guess I should enjoy it while I can.

The lessons he taught me were rough but also necessary. Through his stubbornness and foolishness, he taught me a lot about myself and what I want from life. Dealing with him has strengthened my patience, and softened my communication. Through my interactions with him I learned how to stand up for myself, but also to listen and empathize no matter how crazy someone’s side of the story sounds, because sometimes all you need to do to calm someone down is to validate their feelings or let them know that you actually heard them.

I hate to say it but he was right about a lot of things, even though he was wrong about a lot as well. I used to hate how cynical his outlook was, but the world IS a twisted place with people who are out to get us. He taught me to defend myself from that, and to be cautious with my optimism.

And even though the man pretty much embodies everything I don’t like about people, and the world, there is no getting away from the fact that he was a brilliant engineer and is resilient AF, surviving all the crazy health problems that have been thrown at him. I’m still amazed that he’s up and about after an aortic dissection and a stroke.

So... happy birthday ol’ man. I forgave you for being human awhile ago, but I’m finally feeling like I’ve digested what that means.

It's the little things...

Last night, I was waiting for BF to come home from working at the studio when the doorbell rang. I wasn't expecting anyone so I was hesitant to answer, but the door kept ringing over and over and over. When I looked through the peephole I saw BF standing there grinning with both of his hands clasped shut. Confused, I opened the door. He motioned for me to step outside so I did and let the door close behind me. When he opened his hands, two lazy little lightning bugs fluttered out from them. He knows how much I love those little things and even though seeing them brought me joy, I'm even more amused imagining my boyfriend chasing them down, catching them, and then walking all the way home with his hands clasped shut just to bring a smile to my face. Man, I love him.

So many break-ups lately...

Someone I know is going through a break up right now, and it’s a delicate situation, as are most break-ups. She is young, she is bright, and overall she’s a go-getter/competitive/overachiever. This all serves her well except for when one is trying to heal from the loss and rejection of being dumped. She put on a facade of “I’m over being sad so I’m okay now.” and despite saying she didn’t want to talk about her break up, it still dominated our conversation. I played along with it but I know this shit is cyclical...so I’m kind of just waiting for a vulnerable moment to assure her it’s fine to be fucking bummed the fuck out about it all, still, and for awhile longer. I shared some anecdotes from my own experiences w/heartbreak and that seemed to help her but I did notice she was picking and choosing parts of my stories to continue to deny the part she played in the ending of the relationship. Aye. Some people truly are stubborn. Who knows if she’ll ever come to terms with her own faults. I guess only time can tell, but I wish her well, regardless.

Apparently his daughter told him (very authoritatively) that he is not allowed to look at cute girls anymore. Just me. HAHAHAHAHAHA.

But, most critically, the lawsuit reveals in methodical and stark detail—andpeople can read the suit here—the relentless efforts executed by the powers-that-be at the University of Tennessee to make sure that Manning and their lucrative Rocky Top football program was shielded. Instead of airing out the issues that may have existed, they went full “politics of personal destruction” on Dr. Naughright’s character and credibility.

This is why this story matters, for reasons even beyond the ways in which it peels back Manning’s carefully curated image. It matters because the twisted culture that led to Manning’s being protected and Dr. Naughright’s being destroyed has endured. On Tuesday, six women filed a civil suit against Tennessee. Four say that they were raped by athletes on campus, three by football players. In their suit they contend that Knoxville has “A long-standing, severely hostile sexual environment of rape by male athletes (particularly football players) that was condoned and completely unaddressed.” Read Jessica Luther’s breakdown about the case at Vice Sports that dissects why the plaintiffs allege there is “an official policy of deliberate indifference to known sexual assault.”

I don’t ordinarily talk about or care about organized sports but this whole Peyton Manning thing is important for a number of reasons and there’s one especially that no one is talking about: race. This goes beyond the racist trash surrounding the Super Bowl and how Cam Newton was dragged through the mud for having the gall to be a Black quarterback in 2016, lily white Manning’s supposed last year in the NFL. Look at what happened regarding Manning’s sexual assault and why no one is talking about it.

Peyton Manning sexually assaulted a female trainer, Jamie Naughtright, and people around her told her to blame it on a Black athlete instead of Peyton Manning, it didn’t matter which one, just so that Tennessee’s white star athlete could maintain the facade of his perfect reputation and she refused to do so. Later, Peyton Manning and his father alleged in the ensuing suit that Naughtright’s allegations were untrue because she had a “sultry reputation,” alleging that she regularly had sex with Black students at the university, which was untrue in the end but even if it was, somehow, according to the Mannings, having sex with Black men makes a woman a target for sexual assault. The Mannings capitalized upon the way in which Black men are hypersexualized in the United States in a sad, racist attempt to clear Peyton Manning’s pathetic name.

This is America’s star athlete and hero who will continue to be worshiped and capitalize on one endorsement deal after another. Peyton Manning is a disgusting human-being who doesn’t deserve an ounce of the success he’s received. Where would Peyton Manning be today if he were a Black college athlete who sexually assaulted his athletic trainer? He wouldn’t have celebrated a Super Bowl win with dozens of sponsors.

I read about this the day after the SuperBowl!

Just to add to the details in your post, this “female trainer” was actually one of the athletic directors! She had built a career at University of Tennessee as one of the most valuable assets to their athletic program over a DECADE. The assault details were gross, immature, and disturbing, and not only did they try to pin the guilt on another student, they tried to convince one of the other students to go along with a lie that Manning had made up on the fly! SoooOooOo much shadiness happened there. In the end, she had to leave the career she built behind and start over in Florida. SMFH

If you haven’t yet, read up on this and put it on blast. It’s pretty gross, and I hope Peyton loses endorsement deals over this.
