FMP - Experimental Time Lapse

U35 Experimental & U4 Prod. Management Task 1
What is experimental video?
I feel that an experimental video is about breaking/removing the constraints and conventions of media and exploring a kind of video that explores a video that has no narrative and can evoke or provoke a reaction in an art form that is different from a normal form of mainstream media. For example you could create an experimental to get one reaction or feeling or something that projects multiple feelings or emotions.
I feel with an experimental piece it doesn't really have to have a narrative as it can only just show images that can trigger a reaction or multiple reactions.
What is the point of it?
I feel the point of experimental is to produce an art piece of media that will relate or provoke reactions and emotions, it could be something static and simple and still have the effect to make someone feel something and relate to that emotion or even the piece of experimental itself.
Task 1, Unit 22, SCD - Formats, Narrative Structures and Technical
Formats
This means the way something is set out so for example it could mean the way a set is laid out for a film or SCD.
Narrative Structures
A linear narrative is where the story line runs right from the start to end in chronological order and this means there is no flashback scenes or flash forward scenes, also it is not broken up in any sort of way, one of the most popular TV shows with this kind of structure is Hollyoaks.
Non-linear does on the other hand have/include flashbacks and can be made in any kind of way that is possible. This type of structure can be made useful when making a film as within a film you can reveal the ending before you start to tell the audience the rest of the story. ‘Tarantino’ films are made using this structure. For example, the popular TV show ‘Arrow’ uses this structure as in each episode there is a flashback.
Technical Aspects
Framing - this can include:
extreme long shots - taken from a very long distance and sometimes even a quarter mile away and this shot is used to set the scene that doesn’t have a lot of detail.
long shots - this is where you can see the whole of the actor instead of only seeing part of them.
medium shots - this is a shot of the actor from the waist up and is typically seen being used when there is an over the shoulder shot.
close up - this can contain little background and this type of framing focuses more on the the characters face or a specific detail within a scene. A film maker will use this when they want to make the audience feel more or less comfortable with a character.
extreme close-up - this is when the framing will only show the mouth or the eyes and will have no background on show as this will make it more effective and create a more dramatic feel to the scene.
master shot - this is where single drama is filmed and it is one view throughout it and will keep all the actors in view and this works as a long shot or establishing shot.
Camera Angles:
Bird’s-Eye View - this is where the camera is looking down on a scene and it gives the audience a good view and it makes them feel more superior.
High Angle - this looks down on the audience and its not extreme like a birds eye view and it makes it feel more personal.
Eye Level - this is an angle that is level with the actors eyes and makes the audience feel equal with the actor/character that the angle is focusing on.
Low Angle - this angle is scary and can make the audience feel below the character and makes the audience feel a bit more insignificant. It is an intimidating angle to use.
Oblique/canted angle - this is when the camera is tilted on a an angle to show the audience something that is unusual or off balanced and can cause sort of a discomfort.
Movements:
Pans - this will scan a scene horizontally. The camera is on a tripod and this will help with the stability of the shot and following a moving object is easier when a camera is on a tripod and keep it within the middle of the frame.
Tilts - this is similar to a pan movement but instead it will move vertically instead.
Dolly Shots - this is when a camera will be placed on a trolley or vehicle and this will follow the actors and will track them and often used as a smooth transition from a long distance to a close up.
Hand-Held shots - this type of shot is used in a low budget production and it also gives a more homemade feel to it and can make he audience feel more involved within a scene.
Crane Shots - this is a dolly shot but in the air and only really used when trying to capture a bird’s-eye view.
Zoom Lenses - this can distort and image in an action scene and make the actors and images look closer than they actually are.
The Aerial Shot - this a more exciting version of a crane shot and instead will use a helicopter or a plane to allow the camera to move faster and higher if thats what needed to create a shot.
Lighting:
High Key Lighting - this is a style of lighting for a film, TV, or photography and it aims to reduce the lighting that is in the scene.
Low Key Lighting - this is used to hide features and this uses a single light that is put in a place and only display what is needed to be shown within a shot.
Natural Lighting - to create a more natural feeling to the shot and this is when you only reply on the sun or moon reflections within a scene and this is when no other kind of lights are used.
Ambient Lighting - this is when there is a combination of light reflections and this will help to create an uniform illumination.
Script - Stalked
Task 4 - Proposal (unit 24)
Task 3 - Script Purposes
The first script I looked at is the script for the film ‘The Breakfast Club’ there is a lot of dialogue that the characters have to say and there is not many location changes as it all takes place in the library and only a few other scenes are shot outside the main location. The second script I looked at is for an episode of The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air and looking at this script there is a lot of dialogue and many shots need to be filmed in the scenes as it goes from character to character and it is also detailed.
Both of those scripts are different from one another as one is for a TV show and one is for a film. The film script might be a bit more detailed and definitely longer than a TV show script. The TV script will be shorter and might be as detailed as the film because of the scenes and shots that will need to be filmed.
Task 2 - Background Material (research)
A) It’s important to do a speculation when you are writing a script, this is when the write has to get the truth and before writing any sort of script for their short film or tv show they have to research into what the character will be like and what will happen to them and what kind of character they are going to portray within the role. for example, if your character has a mental health issue you will have to look into the effects of mental health and how people act when on tablets for it or if they haven't told anyone about it they would have to act lonely and try to hide the issue.
B) I am looking at short horror/thriller stories that are either true or not. Looking at how to write a script and what would need to be written to make the script good and scary.
C) While conduction my research, I found out that horror scripts have a good and strong storyline to them and they either tell a tale of something that happened (true story) or something that someone has made up to scare people. Horror has many stories. For example they might have a killer and they will not hint at any of the characters and usually leave it a surprise for the end. For example, the film Scream has multiple killers and you don't know who it is till the end and there either will be hints or not but usually you don't notice.
Task 3:
List of everything needed to make this short horror film (Stalked):
1) Caitlin’s nan’s house
2) Three key actors (Dan,Joe,Cara)
3) Fake knife prop
4) Sound (Boom mic)
5) Camera
6) Tripod
7) Boom operator
8) Camera man
9) Pre production
10) Director
