the production process
planning:
roles: all: me Deadline: 15/06/17 team meetings: i.ll have regular conversations with myself, internally and act upon outcomes logistics: hire out a camera set from the kit room. use of public, and property under ‘my’ ownership. contingencies: source ideas that don't solely rely on (for example) the weather
the idea was decided within a day. a lot of brainstorming, and then deciding on the final idea. the scene needed was shot the following day, to be edited the next. the entire thing done, visually took three days. the sound itself was recorded externally, an used from an old project of mine, so it already exists.
there was no need for any refinements, as it was one short scene, and an added title card
developing ideas.
okay so, coming up with an experimental project. the idea is to make people feel. what, then is the most direct way of doing that? using emotions.
there are then options. do you choose a primal emotion? a base emotion? a higher emotion?
there are certainly a lot of emotions. a lot that can be worked with, but for now, I'm looking for something thats simple but powerful. something that is needed right now, amidst the chaos humanity is laying down.
how about some peace? now peace isn't an emotion but serenity is. and a little serenity in the world can't be a bad thing.
so from that, theres a simple act of deciding what situations cause this.
a simple, but effective one, seems to be sitting out in nature, with the sounds associated, like rustling leaves, birdsong. An oasis from the normal sounds of life, like cars.
taking this all into consideration, then an individual instillation wouldn't make sense. a general internet release would be helpful. proliferation through social media then, makes sense. to bring a little bit of serenity too peoples days.
and from a quick survey, it seems like it could be a well received idea.
for a lot of the ideas I've come up with, it won't take very long to film, and edit. its a question of picking the most ‘serene’ idea, and setting the situation up.
Experimental videos
Experimental videos. big mood for. experimental videos are just that, experiments. They’re art. They’re thoughtful. They’re through provoking.
Experimental videos break from codes and conventions, to bring something that doesn't stick to the normal patter of things. It has been the bearer of some brilliant things, some not so amazing, and others that just defy understanding
par example: this video of someone making a shirt design. (T-SHIRT by Jamie Swarbrick) another example: Colour Bandits by PJ Liguori, which consists of a man standing in a void of colour, devoid of colour, become vibrant.
in the world of video media, there are a lot of experimenters. the earliest being those such as the Lumieres Brothers, and George Melies. Those who pioneered the craft of video/film making. they were the ones that experimented to give rise to the the codes and conventions for all manor of genres, and types. nowadays, the practitioners are all about breaking rules. a major ‘rule break’ is one of the narrative/non narrative. experimental videos can have a story. they can have a start middle and end, and the experiment is how you get from point a to point b a non narrative video experiment on the other hand, does t have the point a to point b to include, so theres a lot more freedom to do with as you please. example?
a difference between the pioneers of the past and present is technology, whereas previously, a lot of experimenting was done by more affluent people, and people already in the world of film, the fact technology has come along, means many more people have access to the art form. theres are arguments to be made, in regards to experimental video now and in history, as: historically, ‘what can we show’ whereas now? ‘what can we do?’
experimental videos are being used more and more often as part of art instillations and exhibits, (I've heard. I've never been to see one, myself, and i can't find any digital replication online to support the fact)
evaluations...
first. the script. the way the script was written went well. it was easy enough to find suitable information to play ideas together. there is enough in the script to hint at information, and the ideas i wanted to get across, and give watchers a hint of things for them to look into, gibing rise to an active viewership thew dialogue helps in this, by never having full explanations to anything.
the film this was a lot more difficult. due to outside forces beyond control, the filming wasn’t able to be finished. A change made to redoing this project would be be starting things a lot sooner, to give more time to contingencies to come into play. also, looking for understudies for actors, because there were a lot of problems with actors, having previous engagements, and ‘forgetting’ to turn upto scheduled filming sessions. difficulties also lay in the group i was with, due to illness i had to take a majority of the editing, and with me not having any input into the music, i had very little idea of where to put the tracks into the edit, and so they havent been included, either. doing that different next time around, then there would be a lot more communications between team members.
when it comes to Single Camera Dramas, there are many ways to create them, and there are a very many ways in which they vary and differ from each other, while still falling under the single camera drama umbrella.
for example, single camera dramas can be split into various different formats. Series are those in which longer running shows with recurring characters have different story lines. A great example of a series would be Doctor Who. Doctor Who follows the adventures of a time lord, getting into various and amazing hijinks, and mysteries that span the cosmos, or affects a small group of people out the way of anyone else. a serial on the other hand deals with something a little more different. This is a lot more like Black Mirror, or maybe even something like Goosebumps. a serial is a connected group of stories in name, and feel, rathger than a character or story. Black Mirror is a show full of ‘what if’s?’ with an aspect of our advanced technological society pushed to a zenith, and looking at what would happen. Goosebumps were/are a set of scary tales for kids, all following a life is normal/odd thing occurs/odd things turns terrifying/???/life returns to normal(or does it?) A single Drama again, is something different. The Miniseries by Syfy, Alice is a good example. its a single one off story. it does what it came to do, and does it well. and then its over. they’re a lot more film-like, doing the entire story start to finish.
a drama can lie in many different genres. To class a show as a drama, it has to have a real world person playing a character. we can then further subclassify a show. a period/costume drama is one set in various eras of the past, like regency stories, or victorian/edwardian/elizabethen/etc etc. Sci fi dramas are set in space, or futuristic societies. crime dramas, or trucrime dramas focus on crime, and the solving of it, think the bill, or NCIS. Soap operas can be included, and they generally have a real world setting, but very overly bad luck for any characters within.
(heres a link to narrative structures, that I have talked about previously. )
