This chocolate cake with Nutella buttercream was for Thomas' first birthday. (He's the little brother of Marte, who got the Transformers cake a couple of years ago.)
This cake was made for our friends Brian and Jim's 20th anniversary party. They met line dancing, so I went with a cowboy theme. Some of the cow spots are shaped to represent important things in their lives -- their cats, a cruise ship for their many cruise vacations, a house for all the home renovations they have done, etc. There are some dance steps on two sides, leading each pair of cowboys boots to the top where they meet.
The top and bottom tiers were chocolate with vanilla buttercream, and the middle tier was coconut with vanilla buttercream.
Boo! These little ghost cupcakes were for a Halloween party. The biggest lesson learned here was that you shouldn't use candy as a base when you need to transport cupcakes! As you can see in the bottom photo, they were a bit of a mess by the time we arrived at the party.
This very large cake was to celebrate our friend John's 50th birthday. John loves nothing more than spending a day at the beach, with or without swim trunks. The cake was chocolate with vanilla buttercream. The decorations were made of gum paste, except the rope, which was fondant. The first photo shows the ingredients, including 6 cups of buttermilk, 6 cups of coffee, 6 cups of cocoa, 20 eggs, 9 cups of sugar, and 3 cups of butter (there were another 7 cups of butter in the icing!), and the giant pot I needed to mix it in.
This Angry Birds cake (chocolate with vanilla buttercream) was for our friends' son Anthony's 5th birthday.
On the opposite end of the spectrum from yesterday's Transformers cake, we have a very girlie cake for Anna's first birthday.
This Optimus Prime cake was made for Marte Jr.'s 4th birthday party, which had a Transformers theme. The photo at bottom right gives some perspective on how big this thing was! (Chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream.)
For a class I was in, we had to create a cake of our own design. There's no real cake in here (it's styrofoam), because it was completed over several weeks of class, but the fondant and gum paste flowers are real.
A baby shower cake for beautiful Anna. Welcome, wee one! (Coconut cake with coconut buttercream.)
Lemon meringue cupcakes for hubby's birthday! (Lemon buttermilk cupcakes, lemon curd, and toasted meringue.)
Happy 1st Anniversary, www.rain43.com! (Chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream. The logo is gum paste.)
A cake fit for a royal wedding watching party. The tiara was made from gum paste. The cake was lemon with lemon curd and vanilla buttercream. Photo courtesy of http://kevingonsalvesphotography.com.
Happy Easter! This cake topper was about 3 inches tall and was made of gum paste.
I made this baby shower cake for a friend of a friend. She didn't know if she was having a boy or a girl, so I used both pink and blue.
Our friend Drew had gone to Mexico to celebrate his 40th birthday. On his return, we helped him consume his tequila. That's what friends are for.
My first attempt at macarons. These are chocolate with salted caramel filling. They weren't perfect to look at, but they tasted great.
My friend's son Zander turned 1!
