Lightyear tires!
Lightning McQueen wears 325/50R15’s it’s canon
Wait nevermind the tire size in the photo doesn’t exist. But the size I mention there^ is the closest real life equivalent.
BRINGING THIS POST BACK FOR A VERY IMPORTANT UPDATE:
tumblr is compressing these but i swear they’re better quality
I loooooove Lightning’s tires! And tiresss!! These are such great screenshots. <3
27.5x12.0-15 is a real-life tire size! It’s a Goodyear Eagle racing slick.
Unlike your usual passenger vehicle tire, which is expressed in a convoluted godforsaken way (like 225/50R15 — 225 is in mm, 50 is a ratio, and the 15 is in inches…) a lot of racing tires use the old-school SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) way. This is the way you’ll often see vintage tire, off-road tire, and racing tire sizes expressed. I’m most familiar with it with regard to off-road tires.
Why is it this way for these specific things? I dunno. Because ‘MURICA!
This expression is way easier than the metric, though, so frankly I wish we all used it. XD The way you read 27.5x12-15 is that the tire is 27.5” top to bottom, 12” wide, and the wheel it’s on is 15” in diameter–which is a size that does make sense for racing. A 15″ wheel is pretty small (17″+ is considered ~stylish if you’re a performance street car). But 15″ means more sidewall, which means a bit more cush and maybe a little better heat dispersal. 12″ is super wide (wider than a NASCAR tire!), which means more tire is in contact with the road at any given time. Adding the width to the fact that a racing tire has a smooth tread, that means a lot of very important traction!
(NB: The one issue is that Lightning’s 27.5 has a colon instead of a decimal point. I’m not sure what a 27:5 ratio would be in reference to, though. Maybe the tire has a beauty mark??)
Thanks for the caps, OP!
I spent like two hours digging around on google back when I first made this post trying to find the tire size and turns out I was reading it wrong because road cars and race cars have different TYPES of RATIOS on their tires…😂 of course.
Thx for the updated info!!!
