#don't really care one way or another abt the beatles but I remember when i was like 8 i was reading the doctor who extended universe novel #the stone rose (banger if you asked me almost 20 years ago) and there was a bit when the doctor was about to be sent in #as a gladiator to fight to the death (it's a good dw story) and he made four friends in the prison cell before the fight #and someone referenced the apostles (? specifically the ones who named books not all 12 idk if they have their own name i napped in church)#and he was like 'sure! sort of!' and nicknamed them john paul george and ringo

since there is such an "english speakers who don't even try to pronounce a foreign mame correctly" epidemic, native english speakers often try to overcorrect and end up thinking they have a moral imperative to pronounce every foreign name correctly at all times. so i'm gonna hold your hand and look into your eyss as i say this: you can't. you can't pronounce every sound in a language you don't speak. and that's fine. it happens to the rest of us too. we won't be mad so long as you try your best.

“I did some research to pronounce this name correctly” = 👍 great! even if the pronunciation was still off (and learning to pronounce a foreign language correctly takes a lot of practice) people generally appreciate it when someone goes the extra mile for accuracy, and honestly, languages are cool

“I’m probably not saying that correctly”/“sorry for my pronunciation” = 👍 understandable! foreign languages often have sounds that aren’t used in English and learning to correctly pronounce unfamiliar phonemes is genuinely difficult even with help

“lol I’m not even gonna TRY to pronounce that 😂” = 👎 THIS is the problem, if treats languages other than English like they are inherently ‘weird’ or ‘overly complicated’ just because you aren’t familiar with them

“One thousand apologies for my butchering of this beautiful effervescent tongue, I will now flagellate myself as punishment for my crimes” = 👎 chill

#also like in my experience at least being unable to work out written pronunciation often does not negate being able to pronounce it #like often you just need told 'ng is basically silent' or 'mh sounds like v'#and learning those rules is not hard. you just need an extra piece of information #to at least give it a respectable go

So I wrote a piece for the pride edition of a literary magazine that my former classmates now run, on how the animated movie Astro Boy (2009) is an under-appreciated queer coming of age that shows the very real danger of being kicked out by parents who are mad that you aren’t the person that they made you to be, acknowledges that it’s traumatic, and presents an ending where those parents will risk themselves so that you can be who you want to be. Very fun, and I think I did a good job.

Problem is, I had the idea to write this way after the deadline ended. So I emailed one of the editors, and she was like, “okay, just get it to me in a couple days.”

So in my haste to bang this thing out, I named the document a really bullshit title, because I like to make myself laugh when I’m under a deadline. I submitted it, and then later came up with a better title in an email.

Wanna guess which one made it into the magazine?

#this is also the way i write essays and frankly? rules #i remember very little of the content of this film but am inclined to agree #based off nothing more than my childhood best mate's dad who pirated movies for us as weans #including it in what i consider in my then-child mind to be my first collection of Boy Movies as a birthday gift #when i was like. ten.

As a Greek, in response to the current controversy about Matt Damon being cast as Odysseus, I'd just like to share that one of the moments that changed my brain chemistry as a kid was reading a novelized version of the Odyssey and coming across the following description of Odysseus when Circe sees him for the first time and thinks he's hot: "his hair curled like a clematis and his eyes were very brown".
