Explosion animation - part 2
text
This is the finished (for now) version of the shot. If I have enough time ill boomerang back round and add some frames to the characters, but I think the shot works perfectly fine like this.
I'm quite happy with how the impact frames have come out. While a little rough, they're both only on screen for a twelfth of a second. I'm particularly happy with the second, the outline of the little monsters makes it feel like the explosion is really something that there nearby to, not just super imposed next to.
Explosion animation - Part 1
text
I began production of the shot with the most simple part: the characters. I think this little still of them looking at the explosion with their faces obscured really sells the horrified reaction in the next shot, and I'm happy with how clean a line quality I was able to achieve (I can afford higher quality drawings on a shot like this which requires less frames). If I get more time I would like to have them be blown back by the explosion a bit, but we'll have to wait and see what kind of explosion I ultimately go for.
This was my first real attempt at actually animating an explosion, and the end result is... rough. While this is a good start, and I like the cluster effect on the smaller explosions, there's a lack of fluidity to it, and relies heavy on just the same shape expanding and retracting. As well as that, I want to utilise more impact frames, which requires more research into how they are used than just throwing them in like I have done here. I'm very happy with the numbers pinging out like damage counters in an RPG, really helps sell the video game aspect to the world.
I decided to try and mock-up a test still to try and figure out how the explosion should look rendered, and I'm mixed on this result as well. The circles could be an interesting shape to go with, but here it looks way too flat. As well as that, I don't care for these colours. I want to try and wrap up this shot soon because its taking up more of my time than I would have liked.
Explosion research
The major comedic beat of my short film relies on a big flashy explosion, which is something that I have little to no experience animating. Because of this, I have decided to do a little research before hand. My first stop was to the book 'Elemental Magic: The Art of Special Effects Animation,' a book which we have in the FMM. The book features an entire section dedicated to explosions, which i used as a rough guide for my own animation test.

Rigging - part 2
My rig is at a state where I believe I can call it finished, at least for now. It has full pose-ability and a limited amount of deformers in the hair and skirt. At some point I wish to come back to it and give it the ability to turn around, but for now I need to get started on other projects.
Here's a full look at the node view. Its quite messy, and when I have the time I would like to re-organise with clearer groupings.
Its quite messy, and when I have the time I would like to re-organise with clearer groupings. Specifically, I would like to unravel the bottom composite node, as it made wiring in auto patches very difficult.
I got the functioning using a dedicated shoulder piece with an autopatch wired through. With this I was able to keep the solid colour across the arms and body without having to mess with complicated sub-layers.
Here's a full video of the rig in motion!!
