09.07.2018: I just wanna thank every single person who wished or attempted to wish me a happy birthday over the past week.. hahaha!!! I’m laughing coz I realize that the attempting group must be acknowledged too. Thanks for all the calls, texts, voicemails, videos, apps, posts, all the DM sliders, all the invitations to lunch and dinner, belated birthday wishes, early birthday wishes, gifts, cakes... I really appreciate it. Special thanks to these individuals who outdid themselves: 1. Thank you Njeri for the amazing surprise! This one was just seated somewhere in Dallas, Texas, then she decided that me turning one year older is something worth witnessing. So she decided that she’s gonna fly to Kenya, and in cahoots with @chimmie_chemtai she happened to be the lady on the next seat in the movie theatre! That was just amazing!!! Thank you so much!! It was an amazing surpise!! I love you so much… all the way to Texas and back… Haha!! ❤ 2. The family, so now, these ones decided that I am now old enough to be prepared for a very UNIQUE breakfast. And after the most amazing things were said about me, they thought that I have reached an age that allows me to see them dancing while they sing for me “happy birthday”. From my father all the way to my little sister… all dancing as they sing, just coz I am one year older… I really appreciate it. You are so amazing!!! Nawapenda sana!!!! ❤ 3. Special thanks to @sarahkamande and @fredricrotich for the amazing fun filled day… themed “Unleashing Slick’s inner child”… heeeeeh!!!! What a way to spend the birthday weekend!! 13.02.2018: At that turn at St. James along Mombasa road... a lorry a head of me was stopped by the cops, wakaanza "story", so I decided, let me overtake it and leave them wakipiga "story"... kidogo I'm stopped too... for overlapping 😒😒😒.... anyway, long story cut short I am taken to Industrial Area police station... I was on leave so hakuna pressure ya kufika job... so as we wait to go to court, I call her, just to check up on her, how she's doing, how the night was... the minute she find out I'm arrested, she dropped what she was doing, in less than 30mins she came all the way from Kite... (mind you there is jam so definitely a nduthi was used)... she organized for safety of my car at the station (Industrial Area)... next thing I know she somehow talked to the police and was allowed to come see me for a few minutes at the holding cells at Milimani Law court... then worked to ensure the money for the fine was brought to court... when taken to the court room she wasn't allowed in, but each time the door was open I could see her akichungulia to assure me she's still there waiting... when I was out around 5hours later, she walked me out the court way Sakaja was walking Babu out of Parklands the other day... 😂😂... and I didn't even ask her to do any of these... all I did is tell her I'm arrested... 😪😪😪 ... and this is just one of many stories... @chimmie_chemtai you amaze me at how you always have my back!!! I often question whether years into my marriage, I’ll still love my wife as much as I did when I got married as my dad does. If I’ll be excited to see her every morning as my dad does. If I’ll be calling her every day whenever I’m away and we have long phone calls as make her laugh as my dad does. If when I am not around to do it, I’ll be making all the necessary arrangements to have my wife transported safely from one place to another despite the fact that I know she can do it herself. If on my random trip to places for work or any other reason, I’ll wanna make it a road trip with my wife. If my wife will be running to meet me when I arrive home as my mom does every time my dad returns. If my wife will be saving that part of chicken that she knows I love so much as my mom does for my dad. If my wife shall be blacking out on the couch waiting for me to arrive so that we can have supper together as my mom waits for my dad. If my wife will be calling me when I’m away concerned whether I have eaten and making sure that I get enough sleep. If my kids will be waking up to sounds of us praying together in our room… If my kids will fail to sleep immediately coz I’m making my wife laugh too hard and too loud… 😂 If there’s one thing I have learnt from my parents it’s that marriage works. They hit 28 years today!! Can’t wait to see this love story unfold!!! 16.09.2017: We were driving back home from eating… celebrating 11months… I threw several glances at her seated there full waiting to get home and hit the sack… So I asked, “On this day next month, we will have hit one year. What would you say you have personally done to make this work?? Or if you were to advice someone, what would you tell them to do to get here??” ⊙ *until she reads this, she had no idea I was recording her. And I have typed her response exactly as she said it* ⊙ @chimmie_chemtai: “Definitely praying for our relationship!!! 16.07.2017: Every year a few weeks before or after my birthday it always surprises me how my buddies always attempt to surprise me with a party on to celebrate my birthday.... This year aki they outdid themselves... This year was the best birthday I've ever had my entire life.... I am really grateful. Here's to thank every one that did anything to appreciate me this month. The calls, the texts... the posts... the voicemails... the gifts... the cakes... the one who invited me over to his place for supper despite him being sick... all they that took me out... that one who traveled all the way from Voi just to make it for the party... the one who stopped his concert just to big me up.... the ones who contributed their money to make the surprise party a success... the one who couldn't make it so they sent videos... they that sang for me.... @chimmie_chemtai for working so hard to make all this happens.... thank y'all for cooperating with her... and most important, everyone that has showed up for me in one way or another this month. 01.07.2016... I remember the date coz it was last year, on a day like this... I posted the first #FoodWisdomAndGreatCompany... and I've been posting the first day of each month... I was gonna stop... I felt like one year was enough... but on Thursday, someone who had no idea I was gonna stop challenged me to get back to blogging... Anyway, a few weeks ago I was on my way from work... I was drained, so I decided to go get some soda atleast to get some energy before I reach home... I run into a buddy we hadn't met in almost two years... We were headed the same direction, so we had time to catch up... I have never appreciated the jam in Nairobi like that day... coz heeeeeeeh, that conversation escalated... he told me how he hacked being with the same lady for 10years... My pastor once said, "Judge a person's maturity when a problem comes. How you solve your problems determines the your level of maturity." After expounding a bit, he said, "Problems ain't always negative things, they are here to make you better as long as you look for ways to solve them." 20th March 2016. It was a Sunday. I remember because it was her birthday. Me and a buddy (whom we shall refer to as person X henceforth) were broke, all we could afford was fuel money to go see her and come back home.. that was the plot… Poverty aint good I tell you… So sisi hao… Mombasa Road… We finally caught up with her in South C. She was so excited to see us… She checks up on person X. Then she gets to me… So she asks, “How are you Caleb? (This one never calls me Slick.)” I say I’m fine. She asks how “the relationship” is… A question that was followed by awkward silence, which was broken by person X who came in and said, “Nooooooo!!! What happened????” I gave some ambiguous answer. @kenyan_malkia looks at me and asks me, “Did she break your heart?” (She had a look that suggested if the answer was “yes” she was gonna call her personal goons we go do a drive-by shooting) So I hesitated a bit to answer that question. Then she asks, “did you break her heart?” More hesitation… So the person X says, “Don’t worry Slick, until you are ready to tell us just know we are on your side.” But then @kenyan_malkia looks at me and says, “Caleb me I don’t care whether she broke your heart or you are the one who broke her heart. You just now that I got your back and I ain’t leaving your side”…. Then she asked us where we are taking her telling us coz all she wants is chicken 😂😂😂😂 I have never forgotten that statement though... Got me asking myself many questions, “How many times do I give people the support they need first then inquire where they went wrong later?” “Is my commitment to people dependent on whether they mess up or not?” “Am I quick to pick sides when there is a falling out between two of my pals?” “Do I really have to pick sides?” “What about the person whose side ain’t picked?
