20th March 2016. It was a Sunday. I remember because it was her birthday. Me and a buddy (whom we shall refer to as person X henceforth) were broke, all we could afford was fuel money to go see her and come back home.. that was the plot… Poverty aint good I tell you… So sisi hao… Mombasa Road… We finally caught up with her in South C. She was so excited to see us… She checks up on person X. Then she gets to me… So she asks, “How are you Caleb? (This one never calls me Slick.)” I say I’m fine. She asks how “the relationship” is… A question that was followed by awkward silence, which was broken by person X who came in and said, “Nooooooo!!! What happened????” I gave some ambiguous answer. @kenyan_malkia looks at me and asks me, “Did she break your heart?” (She had a look that suggested if the answer was “yes” she was gonna call her personal goons we go do a drive-by shooting) So I hesitated a bit to answer that question. Then she asks, “did you break her heart?” More hesitation… So the person X says, “Don’t worry Slick, until you are ready to tell us just know we are on your side.” But then @kenyan_malkia looks at me and says, “Caleb me I don’t care whether she broke your heart or you are the one who broke her heart. You just now that I got your back and I ain’t leaving your side”…. Then she asked us where we are taking her telling us coz all she wants is chicken 😂😂😂😂 I have never forgotten that statement though... Got me asking myself many questions, “How many times do I give people the support they need first then inquire where they went wrong later?” “Is my commitment to people dependent on whether they mess up or not?” “Am I quick to pick sides when there is a falling out between two of my pals?” “Do I really have to pick sides?” “What about the person whose side ain’t picked?
