If your CEO is so inconsequential to the success of your company that he can be gunned down in the street like a dog and it has absolutely no impact on your company whatsoever, maybe he doesn't actually need to be paid several hundred times as much as your median employee.

Maybe you could get away with, like, ten to fifteen times and spend the extra tens of millions of dollars you save on something else.

It’s nearly always the executives who are the least important, most replaceable members of a company. Old Joe, who knows how to fix the widget-making machine when it starts making weird clunking sounds, Tina in accounting who keeps track of which suppliers need to be paid early, Dora the cleaner who has quietly prevented 6 outbreaks of contagious illness just by keeping the bathrooms usable — these people do things which are important and involve actual knowledge. Meeting with shareholders to talk them through a couple of spreadsheets you didn’t even create yourself, you can hire any MBA to do that and fire them the next day.
