How I view the audience of my work and also how I review my work. In some instances, the two can go hand in hand as how I review my writing will sometimes have the audience in mind. There were a lot of moments where I put too much focus on just the revision, but not focusing on why my revisions mattered. Part of writing is understanding why you’re revising and not just what you are revising. Being able to criticize my revision process and how I review my work is going to be one of the major aspects that I carry with me.

I’d have to say I’m most proud of how I’ve challenged some of my thinking when it comes to web writing. This class wasn’t what I expected but that worked in its favor. There was much more beneath the surface of what web writing is and what it entails. I also wasn’t prepared for how in depth a lot of web writing is. I keep coming back to the content analysis assignment because it made me view youtube channels that I visit regularly in a different light and I found it to be the most valuable when I was putting into perspective what web writing fully entailed.

what are you most proud of with your writing process? #writ318mu #week15

I think I’m most proud of the fact that I’ve been able to adapt to tumblr in the short time of the class. Although I have social media of my own, I don’t post often and the social media that I do use is mostly Instagram or Bluesky. They require much more shorter posts usually just a quick thought and you’re done. I’ve never really don’t blog posting on a site like tumblr. Personally, for me discussion posts on D2L don’t count because those are designed to contribute to a weekly discussion post. Tumblr is structured differently. The prompt helped but I was surprised to see how my writing adapted to the format. They were quick posts but I still had to include enough detail to make a substantial post that contributed to weekly discussions.

what assignment questions do you have that will help you complete the assignment successfully? #writ318mu #week15 @npfannen

For the final paper, are we restructuring the questions to form a essay, or is it okay if we answer the questions with a simple Q&A format (question in bold and our answer below sort of thing).  Also for the examples that we pull from, does it have to be a different example for each question? Or if we’ve garnered multiple things from one assignment can we reflect how it applies to the prompt in question?

Share an example of your experience as a fan of a show that was cancelled. help us feel the feels

This isn't a show, it's a webtoon, but I still can't believe Black Haze just went on indefinite hiatus. I started it because I love underdog stories, and Rood Chrishi hooked me right away. This tiny, quiet kid who’s secretly one of the strongest mages alive (literally, he’s the famous "Blow," but no one at his magic school knows).

The webtoon was getting so good too: Rood was undercover at Helios Academy, helping a bullied noble kid named Lidusis, but then they uncovered this whole twisted conspiracy inside the school. We were right at the part where the truth about Lidusis being called a "monster" was about to come out, and the plot was popping off with secret experiments, political corruptions, and betrayals inside the school, and then the hiatus comes... No ending. No answers. It’s been four years... I just wanna know what happens next...

Oh this is a good example cause i hadn't even considered webtoons as something that also contributes to this topic. When it comes to things created by the audience for others it's interesting how my perspective will sometimes shift. i'm much more understanding of individuals who go on hiatus than i am of a major media company canceling a project though.

• Share an example of your favorite television show or movie - how does that show/movie help you work through this project and understand angry fandom?

My “Favorite Show” is an animated series based on an actual play ttrpg campaign. It has a lot in common with Critical Role’s Vox Machina given that aspect but the show I’m using as a large source of inspiration is actually Game of Thrones.

The more serious vibes, the attention to detail, the fantasy being more grounded with a dark edge, it coming from a solid and rich source material with a lot of potential. Only for it be mishandled and end on a sour note.

Game of Thrones could have been THE show, it was so well done and well received to the point where everyone was taking about it, even people who aren’t necessarily big into the fantasy genre. People, myself included, were really enamored by the show. For myself it felt like the first time a show felt a piece of art in a similar vein to watching a quality film.

It’s ashamed it had such a sorry end.

I think both are great references to pull from especially GoT with how it's ending was so heavily criticized by fans. But before that, i don't think i've heard much bad about the show as a series outside of how it ended. I think it's great when shows build a community of both fans and newcomers. Though i do understand too when so many years are spent investing in a story, you can't help but feel like you've gotten the short end of the stick when certain plot threads or character development are shoved aside for almost no reason at all.

Share an example of your favorite television show or movie - how does that show/movie help you work through this project and understand angry fandom? 

One of my favorite shows that is experiencing some controversy right now is The Last Of Us. A lot of fans have been upset over the casting of certain characters such as one of the main protagonist Ellie and another main character Abby. This show has been adapted from a video game, so people have been complaining that the characters from the show don't look like their video game counterparts. This show helps me while working on this project by seeing how the show and actors deal with this hate.

I loved the game and I also love the show, but the one thing that i've always found a bit disturbing is how possessive some fans feel over creative IP's. I think this is a great example to pull from because it's a reminder that whenever there's an adaptation, there are real people behind these characters and they deserve respect despite personal feelings of how the adaptation is handled.

One of my favorite shows recently was Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. It’s an anime with only one season that is based on the popular video game, Cyberpunk 2077. I’ve played the game so I was really excited for the series and it was amazing. Though after I noticed the talk online were fans wishing for a season two, even though it was stated that there would only be one season, or how people wished a certain character had a different life outcome (won’t spoil what happens). I drew some inspiration from the interactions I saw here and even how I’ll likely edit my draft. A lot of fans praised the show but were understandable upset that there wouldn’t be more. However it never took away from how amazing the story and characters were and a lot of fans chose to hold onto what the show means rather than if we’ll receive more content.

 I remember there was a show back when the channel Freeform was known as ABC Family. It was called The Nine Lives of Chloe King. It was based off of a book, but was picked up for adaptation. It had one season and ten episodes. I remember being so invested in that show. I watched it every night that it aired and season 1 ended on a MASSIVE cliff hanger. It was almost like they knew or marketed it so that it would get a continuation. I waited for weeks for any word about the show but then it all just suddenly went quiet. ABC Family never really said it was canceled or no announcement was made unless you went looking for it. I was so upset but like every other teen drama I watched in that era, I eventually forgot about it but it sometimes comes back into the back of my mind.

we are nearing the end of the semester, what questions do you have about naming and transferring the writing skills you developed in this class to real world, real life, work situations? #writ318mu #week14 @npfannen

One of the things this class has made me more conscious about is how writing in different mediums like social media, influences how you address your audience. Though writing the content analysis applied these in an academic way as well. What advice would you have for further developing these skills so that they can be applied in more academic settings? I found the content analysis to be challenging but the most rewarding for understanding how Web Writing extends beyond the social medias we use.

A lot of times creators and producers will have social media teams or community managers that helps interact with fans and keep things in a somewhat civil manner. They can connect by these creators reposting fan theories, fan art, or just highlighting community engagement. I think creators are careful though and keep the barrier between the show and community.

I’ve noticed how some audiences will connect with each other through fan art, or share theories of what will happen in the rest of the season or episodes. Hashtags play an important part too because it helps broadcast trending topics to the audience. Usually if a show is canceled, renewed, or if there’s a major character death, people will use hashtags and create trending topics. Trending topics are a great way for fans to air out plot details or frustrations.

Canceled after Season 1. I’m taking inspiration from my own experiences but also the fact that I’m basing my ‘favorite show’ on how some popular medias like books/mangas/video games or even movies get adapted or rebooted for TV only to be canceled before they can reach their full potential. Streamers like Netflix are the ones that do it the most. It could be that it’s canceled due to numerous reasons like little to no marketing, low ratings, or simply budget. It’s frustrating though for fans of a show to start to get invested in a show after one season only to be told that it won’t continue. It also shows just how different streaming is to traditional broadcasting networks and how its formula has bled a little into traditional TV formats.

I see the note on the assignment that we need to have all of the posts drafted for this week and we can revise later. Does this mean we can write the posts in bullet points or do we have to have them screenshotted and pre-prepared to fulfill that requirement? Also when coming up with Favorite Show, can we pull from our own viewing experiences when crafting the show? I know this might already be assumed, but I just want a bit more clarification on how we should go about coming up with the favorite show without explicity basing it on XYZ.

Honestly, having a good revision process is such a game-changer. Before this class, I kinda rushed through stuff and hoped for the best. Now I actually take time to read things like I’m the person on the other side of the screen. It’s not just fixing typos it’s making sure what I’m saying makes sense, sounds like me, and actually connects with people. I know this is gonna help me way past this class, whether it’s for content creation, job stuff, or just writing online. Good revision = better content, better messages, and way less “ugh, why’d I post that?”

I agree 100% and actually mentioned that this was the biggest takeaway for me with the HTWG. My normal revision process didn't really help me much because I was so focused how I revised the content analysis which was a totally different assignment. Understanding that I had to change my approach was the biggest thing that helped me.

Tips & Tricks 1: Invite the Audience to be Theorists too

I think this is something that we can all use when it comes to our writing. Whether we write creatively or only for our academics, there is value in each subject that we choose to highlight. Most of the time we’re doing research papers but I think its important to always frame your content that invites your intended reader/audience to participate in either thinking critically, or understanding certain ideas. Just reading, and understanding the content is one thing, but it makes a difference when the content you create helps generate new ideas within you audience.

how did content creation go for you? What did you learn that will help you write about your tips & tricks? #writ318mu #week12

I made sure to write out a ‘script’ for what I wanted to say. I took the approach that Dr. P uses in our weekly videos for class since I have no access to video editing software or how to even begin in making a YouTube video, I figured that would be the best avenue to create my sample YouTube video. Overall, I think it went well for me. I made sure that my sample content was presenting a theory for the creator and how it works with each tip and trick. Obviously, I’m not going to create a twenty-minute video but I did attempt to make a youtube thumbnail to help with the lack of an actual theory video.
