When are you guys opening the form for us to vote?
We forgot that we had opened the forms due to exams but due to lack of nominations, I do not think we will be having awards. We are trying to keep it open longer to see if we get more nominations but we have only had a few nominations.
Do these even count as spring awards? School ends in like four weeks
After our first, extremely fun, Winter Awards. We decided to give this a go again. We just wanted to post some rules before before posting the voting link.
1. NO SPAM NOMINATING
2. All fics must be on 5sosfanfiction.com
3. All nominations must be at least five chapters. One-shots in the categories are allowed but otherwise, no exceptions.
4. Fics must be put in the correct category to be nominated.
5. A fic, including the author, may not be up for over four awards. If an author is nominated in over four awards, the top four nominated categories will be taken. It is not fair for an author to be nominated in over four categories out of ten. Especially if they are a popular author.
6. Please list the author name while nominating. If no author name is given, it does not count as a nomination.
7. Please, we are saying this again but no spam nominating. We almost got in trouble last time and had to disqualify authors from winning judge’s choice and categories due to spam nominations.
Nominations close on May 23, 2015 at 8 pm central time.
DISCLAIMER: WE ARE NO WAY AFFILIATED WITH 5SOSFANFICTION.COM. OUR ADMINS DO NOT PARTICIPATE IN NOMINATIONS OR VOTING.
We cannot stress this enough. Spamming is against the rules and it gets really annoying. We get emails every time someone votes. Please. We almost got a 0 on an exam because of it and do not want to bomb our English speech that is 1/3 of our grade.
I actually meant that spamming seems useless, or are only stories under the nominees that had several nominations for the category?
All nominations listed were all that were nominated that followed the rules. There were a few that didn't have author name, OFC name, chapter or scene for best kiss. Those nominations were not put on the list x
Just wondering, why do people spam the nominations, I thought it didn't matter how often a story was named?
It only counts as spam if it is nominated multiple times within a certain time frame. So if a nomination was spaced out, which a lot of them were, it wouldn't of count as spam. They were in a certain time frame.
Here is the nomination badge done by the incredibly talented Lennon on the 5sosfanfictionproboars :)
Voting link will be open by late tomorrow afternoon or early evening. We both had work tonight and have to be somewhere in the morning so we are trying to get the voting up as quick as possible.
Thank you all for nominating :) We did disqualify a few submissions because no author name was given or spam. Some stories were spam nominated (By the author, we assume). We could not disqualify them because they were previously nominated by other people. That author will not be picked for Judge's Choice in any nominated category. A story was also eliminated from Best Kiss because there was no detail about finding the scene, just the chapter.
Voting will be up either tonight or sometime tomorrow. We're both busy tonight and tomorrow morning but we will try our best to have them up as planned tonight.
We apologize if we have any typos in this list of nominees (author name or story), send us an ask and we will fix it.

Historical Romance - How to add layers to your scenes
by Anthony Ehlers for Writers Write
In terms of historical fiction, we look back. We look back because that is where the answers lie. It is all about context. The research must be fun. It must also fit your story, and lift the narrative.
Show us the ‘personality’ of that era, so that the historical setting becomes almost another character: show the sexual, gender and social politics, the mood of the times etc.
Five ways to add context
History itself. Who was in power at the time? Why? What was the main trade? What were the marriage laws? Historical detail is a great way to inform or give impetus to the plot, such as the London Season for Debutantes, etc.
How circumstances affect characters. We must never just lay on historical information, but rather weave into the story and it should ideally be seen through the lens of the character. How does she feel about how society treats women, etc.?
Sense it. Make use of the senses—the smell of the docks, the latest French perfume, the sight of a new ship or a building, the type of music in vogue, etc. – and tie those to the historical ambience of the world
Dress it. Make sure you know what your heroine is wearing, what undergarments support it, what was considered appropriate or risqué, and what kind of dress would suit your character best
Detail it. Go for small details that signal the reader that you’re building an authentic world – the dress, the dinner plate, the food, a cherished pet, an artwork or an objet d’art etc. Other details that may lift the narrative: modes of transport, whether it is a carriage or a horse (what kind?), the architecture, furniture, the literature of the day, details of places of worship and churches, the type of medicine, etc.
We need to go under the surface of the story, to know what life was like in that era and how your character is experiencing it. Remember that your reader may not know anything about the period or time—they need the writer to build the world, paint the picture, give colour, texture and emotion.
The characters don’t live in a vacuum-we need to build the characters’ world through details, sensory description; the world must be believable and entertaining.
Five exercises to help you
Print images from Internet or collect photocopies from books and create a collage of these for your writing desk
Describe the interior of the heroine’s bedroom as if you were writing for a nostalgia magazine or for a new experiential museum
Describe the morning ritual of the hero: how he shaves, dresses, what ritual he may follow
Create a dinner menu for a typical social meal of the time, and source ingredients for it – imagine the trip to the market
Imagine a time traveller from the present happens upon your setting —have her write a dispatch back home to describe this extraordinary experience!
