HFC Fridays & Calendar Year Age Group Scrimmages
We pleased to announce the beginning of our new program: HFC Fridays! Starting this Friday, November 13th, we’re beginning a series of Friday night events designed to deepen and augment the HFC training experience. On HFC Fridays, the kids get to play as they do on the streets of Sao Paulo, Barcelona, Mexico City, and everywhere else on the planet. Unstructured, creative, and fun - on Fridays the kids own the game! The activities will change periodically—including futsal, soccer volley, and soccer tennis—but the goal is to create and open environment that develops individual creativity and risk taking outside the confines of team training. Let the players play! BIRTH YEAR GET-TOGETHERS BEGIN NOV. 13th! Our first group of HFC Fridays is specifically organized to help our players begin the transition to the new calendar year rostering, which takes effect early next year. These opportunities for free play and unstructured competition will begin to build the social bonds that make kids comfortable with change. It’s IMPORTANT that every HFC player attend the Friday sessions for his or her birth year. Our coaches will observe these sessions to better get to know the players. This will help them make better roster recommendations for your son or daughter. Open Tryouts, Too! These special Fridays sessions are FREE, and also open to new players interested in checking out the Club, trying out for one of our teams, or simply joining us for some fun. Invite your friends! HFC GU11 Girls Show Grit, Win Simi Valley Invitational Playing with Just 9 Players
Everything seemed to be stacked against Coach Kellet Lascaris and his Girls Under 11 team this weekend at the Simi Valley Invitational. First there was the heat - hovering near 100 all weekend long - it was the kind of weather a coach combats by using all of their subs to keep the players fresh. But this weekend, due to injuries and the holiday weekend, the girls would not only play without subs, they would be limited to just 10 players. After losing the first game, the girls would grit it out to get a tie in the second game, then blew out there third opponent to clinch second place and a birth in the finals. The championship game would be a rematch of the first game which they lost 4-1. But this time instead of only having 10 players, they would be limited to only 9. 9 vs 11! But no matter, as the HFC girls defied the odds and won 1-0 in the finals to claim the championship. Amazing! Congratulations to Coach Kellet and the entire GU11 squad. Director of Coaching Santo Rivas Reflects on the New US Soccer Player Development Initiatives
by Santo Rivas, USSF National Staff Instructor, DOC Hollywood FC There are some big changes coming next year to how youth soccer will be taught and played in this country. I want to give you a quick overview now, with more detailed information to follow later in the Fall. Beginning in Spring, 2016, US Soccer, our national governing body, will phase in nationwide changes to how youth train and compete in the US. Rosters will change based on a new set of birth dates. The competitive rules for players age u6-u12 will change, as will the size of the fields on which they play. There will be other changes as well. These changes will not effect the upcoming Fall competitive season. This will mark a major paradigm shift in how we teach, coach, and play the youth game in this country, bringing us more in line with best practices of soccer training worldwide. The new standards are designed to improve the playing environments for all youth players, and help shift the focus from “winning" to individual player development. They will work hand-in-hand with the major improvements we have made in coaching education and professional standards for coaches across the country, of which I have been a part as a national and state instructor. A great deal of analysis, debate, and planning at many levels has gone in to these new standards,. They will take some time to fully implement, especially in southern California, where the membership is enormous and diverse. Details about their phase-in are still being discussed by CalSouth and our competitive leagues, but the unofficial word is that the age range changes will go into effect for the fall 2016 season. The HFC Board of Directors and I are working closely to plan and prepare for our Club to embrace these new standards, and put them to work for your child. I’m also working with the coaching staff so they will be fully prepared to implement them when the time is right. We expect a smooth transition and positive benefits for all our players. In the near future, we will host a Club Informational Event to explain the changes to come and our plans to implement them. In the meantime, we’ve posted a short informational video produced by US Soccer, which is viewable at the bottom of this page. In the short term, however, I’m very excited about the fall season upon us, and look forward to seeing all your children in action soon. New Director of Coaching at Hollywood FC
After a long, thorough and detailed search involving interviews and discussions with some of the leading soccer professionals in Southern California, the Board of HFC is extraordinarily proud and pleased to announce the hiring of our new Director of Coaching, Santo Rivas. Santo holds an “A” level license and has more than 20 years coaching experience at every level of the game, including the Club, High School, and NCAA Division II College levels. He is a USSF National Staff Instructor and has trained hundreds of coaches nationwide in pursuit of high level national professional coaching licenses. He also conducts coach licensing courses locally for CalSouth. Santo is deeply immersed in the latest best practices of the USSF national coaching curriculum, and has personally worked with hundreds of coaches to raise their level of soccer training knowledge. He will help our coaches continue to improve everything we do on the field. Santo has also served as Director of Coaching for the prestigious New Orleans Soccer Academy. He has coached club teams to the highest levels of national recognition and achievement, including finalist and semi-finalist placement at Surf Cup and Dallas Cup. In 2008, he was named USYSA Coach of the Year, the same year one of his teams won the Louisiana State Cup Championship. Though born in the Bronx, NY, Santo grew up right here in Southern California. He’s a product of CalSouth clubs and local universities. He played NCAA D1 and professionally in the USISL/A-League. He brings with him a deep knowledge of our community and the world of LA Soccer. He combines this with deep ties throughout the National soccer community, up through the highest levels of the United States Soccer Federation. Most importantly, Santo is widely considered one of the finest young coaching leaders in America. He brings unique vision, a passion for developing players and mentoring coaches, and a strong natural embrace of the 4 Core Principles that make HFC a unique organization. He believes what we believe, in serving children first and foremost, in developing elite athletes and elite young human beings, in extending the opportunities of Club soccer to every deserving child no matter what his or her standing in life. In short, Santo shares our One Common Goal. Santo is also fluent in English, Spanish, Italian & French, which will be incredibly helpful with our diverse club culture. We are very fortunate to welcome Santo Rivas to the leadership of Hollywood FC. Santo takes up the position August 1st, and over the following weeks he will be holding parents meetings on our fields to introduce himself to the community. Two Hollywood FC Teams Promoted to Silver in Coast Soccer League
Coast Soccer released the brackets yesterday for the Fall 2013 season, and Hollywood FC has had two teams promoted from Bronze to Silver. Congratulations to both teams and good luck next fall. The BU14 team, coached by Kellet Lascaris, will be playing in the Silver West bracket which features teams from Santa Monica United, Valley United & Chivas. This is an exciting step for a team that has made great strides the past few seasons. The Boys Under 12 team, currently coached by Gabriel Penaloza but led the past few years by Alec Hunter, will be playing in the Silver North Bracket featuring teams from Santa Monica United, Pacific Coast Soccer Club & Sherman Oaks Extreme.
