         sally  gonzalez  was  born  to  two  loving ,   intelligent  parents .   her  father  was  a  chemistry  professor  and  her  mother  was  an  english  professor ,    &  they  met  while  they  were  both  teaching  at  nyu .    growing  up ,    sally  was  what  others  have  affectionately  termed  a  ‘ whiz  kid ’ .     academically ,    things  just  came  easily  to  her .     maybe  her  parents  did  something  right  or  maybe  she  just  got  the  best  of  both  of  their  intelligence  genes ,    but  by  the  time  she  was  eight  years  old ,    her  parents  put  her  into  a  private  school .   she  actually  enjoyed  it ,   both  academically  and  socially .    she  was  by  no  means  popular ,    but  she  had  a  good  circle  of  friends  who  were  around  her  age  that  she  bonded  with  deeply .    despite  being  awkward  and  a  bit  scatterbrained ,    sally  was  actually  sort  of  charming  and  didn’t  have  a  lot  of  issues  socially .   sometime  during  these  early  years ,   her  baby  brother  was  born .   she  helped  raise  him ,    especially  since  their  parents  were  always  so  busy  with  work ,   conferences ,   and  other  things  of  the  sort .  

          sally  had completed  her  high  school  education  by  age  twelve ,    and  her  parents  were  at  a  bit  of  a  loss .   in  2001  there  weren’t  exactly  ample  options  for  a  child  with  such  aptitude .     they  wanted  to  encourage  her  education ,   of  course ,    but  weren’t  comfortable  with  sending  their  pre-teen  to  college  on  her  own .    so  they  decided  to  bring  her  to  work  with  them ,    and  have  her  participate  in  their  classes .     she  truly  flourished  in  her  father’s  classroom ,    and  after  a  couple  of  semesters  she  was  allowed  to  fully  enroll  in  classes .   she  began  collecting  credits  and  degrees ,    and  by  the  time  she  felt  she  was  done  with  learning  she  had  earned  undergraduate  degrees  in  botany ,   entomology ,    and  criminology  as  well  as  a  doctorate  in  forensic  anthropology .    at  age  nineteen ,     she  met  gilbert  calypso  in  a  criminal  psychology  course ,   and  they  hit  it  off .    within  the  year ,    the  two  were  married  and  moved  in  to  a  condo  in  upper  manhattan .

         after  finishing  schooling  at  twenty - two ,     she  began  a  career  in  crime  scene  investigation .    gilbert  began  to  practice  as  a  psychologist .   sally  was  contracted  to  work  on  homicide  cases ,    and  was  partnered  with  an  fbi  agent  to  complete  these  investigations .    it  was  very  interesting  &  fulfilling  work ,    however  sally  hadn’t  understood  quite  how  dangerous  it  was .    two  years  into  her  new  career ,    she  and  her  partner  were  pursuing  a  serial  killer .    the  killer ,   unfortunately ,    was  several  steps  ahead  of  the  investigation .   to  send  a  message ,    gilbert  was  killed  &  left  in  their  home .    the  killer  had  just  finished  doing  the  same  to  sally’s  partner’s  wife  when  he  arrived  home .    the  killer  was  shot  &  killed  on  the  scene ,     but  the  damage  was  already  done .

           in  the  span  of  one  day ,    sally’s  entire  world  flipped  upside  down .   she  couldn’t  function  anymore .    she  quit  her  job  effective  immediately ,   but  she  still  couldn’t  go  home  without  tearing  through  crime  scene  tape  &  remembering  what  the  love  of  her  life  looked  like  laying  on  the  floor .    she  moved  back  in  with  her  parents  for  a  few  weeks ,    but  it  just  confirmed  what  she  already  knew :    she  couldn’t  stay  in  new  york .    everything  reminded  her  of  him ,    and  it  was  killing  her .    she  sent  job  applications  to  half  the  high  schools  in  new  england ,    wanting  to  put  her  energy  towards  life  &  possibility  rather  than  death .    

          the  move  to  moorbrooke  at  age  24  was  purely  chance .  as  it  turned  out ,    she’s  an  amazing  teacher .     she  had  never  considered  it  before ,   but  after  getting  hired  to  teach  AP  chemistry  at  moorbrooke  high  school  she  couldn’t  imagine  doing  anything  else  for  the  rest  of  her  life .     she  is  one  of  the  most  popular  teachers  in  the  school ,    known  for  her  wacky  classroom  environment ,    fun  &  charismatic  lessons ,    and  ridiculous  experiments .    after  her  students  begged  &  pleaded ,     she  joined  tik  tok  to  post  fun  educational  videos  and  clips  from  her  lessons .    i  imagine  the  vibe  to  be  like .....   miss  frizzle  for  older  kids .

“Question for you,” Adrian began, turning in the direction of the person beside him. He’d been lost in thought, seemingly fixated on the laptop screen lit up in front of him. The syllabus of his spring semester course had been pushed to one side, the ratemyprofessor website dominating the screen instead. “What’s that pepper thing next to my name? Is that some kind of secret gen z code or something?”

         well ,    sally  knows  her  way  around  ratemyprofessor !    way  back  in  the  day  she  even  helped  her  own  parents ,    both  professors  at  nyu ,    monitor  their  own  pages .    ‘  congrats  on  your  rating ,   first  of  all !    your  students  must  love  you .    the  pepper ,   um ,    i  think  it  was  originally  intended  to  indicate  a  dynamic  teaching  style .    but  over  time  the  meaning  evolved  into ....   well ,   there’s  probably  a  more  delicate  way  to  phrase  this ,    but  the  reality  of  the  situation  is  that  you’re  hot .   i  mean ,    your  pupils  think  you’re  hot .   awkward ,   huh ?   at  least  they’re  legal  adults .    not  that  it  makes  it  less  uncomfortable .  ’

HE  HAD  SPENT  THE  FESTIVAL  helping  giada  put  together  her  versions  of  wreaths  —  mostly  just  making  each  piece  of  her  felt  as  colourful  as  she  can  ,  although  she’s  created  what  looks  more  like  a  ball  than  a  wreath  .  it’s  been  a  good  day  so  far  ,  and  the  male  looks  up  from  the  felt  mess  his  daughter  has  created  when  sally  appears  ,  gesturing  around  when  she  explains  her  predicament  .  “  make  yourself  comfortable  .  i’d  have  no  idea  how  to  deal  with  that  either  .  ”  enzo  chuckles  .  “  maybe  you  need  to  just  trick  him  into  thinking  you’re  seeing  someone  so  he’ll  back  off  .  ”  

        under  the  chaotic  sanctuary  of  the  craft  tent ,    sally’s  shoulders  slump  as  she  sighs  dramatically  in  relief .   ‘  thank  you .   it’s  a  jungle  out  there .  ’   not  really ,   of  course ,    but  she  will  pull  up  a  chair  across  from  the  pair  all  the  same .   ‘  and  a  party  in  here ,   apparently !    check  out  all  this  glitter .  ’    sally  trails  a  fingertip  through  the  mess  of  glitter  on  the  table ,   a  small  smiley  face  clearing  its  way  through  the  sparkles .    ‘  that’s  smart  ----  but  feels  like  a  lot  of  effort .    and  you  know  i’m  a  terrible  liar !    i  never  know  when  to  stop  talking  and  i  just  give  myself  away .    and  i  also  don’t  want  the  kid  telling  other  kids  i’m  seeing  someone ,    because  then  they’ll  just  ask  me  more  and  more  questions .    not  to  mention  if  they  found  out  i  was  lying ,    they’d  eat  me  alive .    you  know  how  teenagers  can  be .   ’

          sally  has  been  coming  to  festivals  alone  since  she  first  moved  to  moorbrooke  seven  years  ago .     she  enjoys  them ,    but  they  are  bittersweet  all  the  same :     her  late  husband  would  have  absolutely  adored  the  festivities .    he  would  have  loved  moorbrooke ,   too ,    but  something  about  the  spark  of  excitement  that  permeates  the  fall  air  tonight  makes  her  miss  gilbert  a  bit  extra .    sally’s  relief  is  evident  when  she  spots  enzo ,   his  face  a  familiar  and  welcome  sight  as  it  has  been  since  childhood .    she  ducks  into  the  craft  tent ,    eyes  wide  as  she  carefully  positions  herself  out  of  sight  of  any  passersby .    ‘  one  of  my  students  is  here  and  he  has  been  relentlessly  trying  to  set  me  up  with  his  dad .    i  have  no  idea  how  to  deal  with  that ,    so  you’re  hiding  me  until  the  coast  is  clear .  ’

There were a million things that Dillon loved about the Autumn season and one of those were the fresh apple cider. of course you could get apple cider all year round but it seemed like it was so much better at this time of year. He was carrying around a cup of it as he walked through the festival. He happened to be paying more attention to the color of the trees than what was going on in front of him. He didn’t realize that he had bumped into someone and the cider managed to land all over his shirt, luckily not the other person though. “Oh crap! I’m so sorry! Are you okay?” He asked, not really caring about his condition.

“I don’t know. I was thinking about a vampire for halloween but is that too cliche?” It wasn’t that he really cared what people thought. He still needed to talk to Aksel to be sure if they were going to match or what exactly their plans were, but as a shock to no one, Halloween was his favorite holiday. It gave him a chance to be someone else. “I don’t think I’ve got the personality to pull off Batman, but that’d be cool I guess.” As much as he let on that he didn’t care, Reece was a giant nerd in a small body. He wanted to go all out, he wanted to have fun, he wanted to look good.

               it’s  late  and  the  lab  is  closing  down  for  the  day .    working  on  a  saturday  isn’t  exactly  her  ideal  way  to  pass  the  time ,     but  any  chance  to  flex  her  anthropology  knowledge  is  worth  the  wear .   sally  is  peeling  her  gloves  off  and  tossing  them  in  the  bin  when  reece  speaks .    oh ,    shoot !    he’s  right ,    halloween  is  coming  up !    and  it  falls  on  a  weekday ,    which  means  she  has  to  figure  out  a  costume  that  is  both  work - appropriate  and  won’t  get  her  absolutely  flamed  by  her  students .    ‘  a  vampire  could  be  fun !    ole  reliable ,   right ?   but  you  can’t  half - ass  it ,    it’ll  be  lame .    if  you  do  vampire ,    then  i  think  you  should  go  full  dracula  with  a  black  cape  and  white  face  paint  and  fangs  and  everything .    you’ve  got  to  commit  to  the  bit !   although ,    batman  is  good ,    too ,    since  he’s  really  trendy  at  the  moment .    besides ,    who  says  you  have  to  have  a  certain  personality  to  wear  a  costume ?   isn’t  all  the  fun  of  halloween  that  you  get  to  be  someone  you’re  not ?  ----  oh !   oh ,    have  you  ever watched  parks  &  rec ?    you  could  wear  the  batman  suit  but  say  you’re  ben  wyatt  on  treat  yourself  day .   top  tier  comedy .....  ’     she  turns  to  face  him ,    her  expression  suddenly  somber  despite  the  mirth  still  sparkling  in  her  eyes .   ‘  halloween  is  such  a  high  stakes  holiday ,    isn’t  it ?    ----  i’ve  been  miss  frizzle  for  the  past  two  years  and  i  loved  it .    i  even  brought  crunchwrap  supreme  to  school  dressed  as  liz  the  lizard .     the  problem  is ,    now  i  have  to  one - up  myself  otherwise  my  students  will  bully  me .    with  love ,     of  course ,     but  they  will  absolutely  bully  me .   ’

              reading  in  the  park  is  one  of  sally’s  current  favorite  pastimes .    it’s  nice  to  be  outside ,    going  on  what  her  students  call  hot  girl  walks .   every  now  and  then ,    she’ll  spot  an  interesting  flower  bloom ,   which  is  always  fun ,   and  every  now  and  then  she  stumbles  across  an  animal  that  has  wandered  a  bit  too  close  to  the  human  population .   recently  she  saved  a  hatching  luna  moth  that  was  perched  perilously  low ,    and  today  she  spots  another  little  friend  who  could  use  a  hand  with  relocation .   she’s  making  a  beeline  for  him ,   only  to  quickly  realize  he’s  in  danger .    ‘  please  watch  out !!  ’  probably  a  bit  louder  than  she  needed  to  be ,    but  the  other  person’s  foot  has  landed  dangerously  close  to  her  current  rescue  mission .    kneeling  to  the  ground ,    sally  gently ,   fearlessly ,     scoops  up  the  large  praying  mantis  from  the  grass .  ‘  mantis  religiosa !   sorry ,    didn’t  mean  to  startle  you .  i  just  didn’t  want  him  to  get  squished .  i  saw  his  entire  little  mantis  life  flash  before  my  eyes !  ’

He made a face, giving a shutter before waiting for her to come back, bug free. “No thanks, I’ll stick to Kathy.” He had never been a big pet guy until his divorce. The apartment felt lonely without someone around so he went to the shelter and found himself a dog. She was the new love of his life, even sitting out in the lobby of the shop most days. He wasn’t going to just leave her at home, but of course the sanitary guidelines kept her out of his actual work space. “We’re still going to lunch, don’t worry.” 

        ‘  yeah ,   honestly  i  get  it .    i’m  pretty  happy  with  meatloaf ,   crunchwrap ,   mulder  and  scully .  ’  her  two  ferrets  and  two  budgies ,   respectively .    ‘  and ,   you  know ,  they  aren’t  for  everyone !   as  much  as  i  love  bugs ,   i  don’t  think  i’d  want  to  keep  one  as  a  pet  either .   i  prefer  my  pets  to  live  longer  than  six  months .   ----  and  most  mantises  don’t  even  live  that  long !  ’   speaking  of  kathy ,   though .....    sally  glances  around ,    hoping  to  see  the  hound  running  happily  through  the  grass .   ‘  speaking  of !   is  kathy  running  around  somewhere  out  here ?   i  wanted  to  say  hello !  ----  but  if  she  already  had  lunch  plans ,   i  understand ,  ’    sally  jokes .    her  expression  brightens  at  the  confirmation ,   already  mentally  leafing  through  menus  to  decide  what  she  wants  to  eat .   ‘  thank  god !   i’m  starving .   i  haven’t  eaten  since  breakfast .  ’   yeah ,   it’s  been  all  of  four  hours !

Zahir couldn’t help but blink faintly at her response. He couldn’t say he really thought about insects that much. He never really went out of his way to kill them, they had generally free roam even in his place unless they endangered his ferrets. He’d fed a few crickets to his uncle’s snake, when the mice shipment was short but that was about it. He’d never really considered that difference in sexes or even know that mantis’s had wings. “You’d think they’d use their wings to flee the whole decapitation but I suppose they are distracted.” He nods faintly, “I suppose that would suck although it is in exchange for a clever reputation so I’d say they win.” He shrugs faintly, “No need to apologize, its atleast facts I can tuck away whenever I may need the. As much as you know you’d think you’d be teaching your students all about insects. What do you teach instead?”

          ‘  well ,    only  about  a  quarter  of  their  sexual  encounters  actually  end  up  with  the  male  being  eaten .   but  the  ladies  who  do  eat  their  mates  produce  about  twice  as  many  eggs  because  she  uses  his  body  tissue  to  produce  more  eggs .    nature’s  crazy ,   huh ?  ’    she  could  dump  information  forever ,    honestly ,    if  she  has  a  willing  audience !   ‘  oh ,   i’ve  got  tons  of  facts  for  you  to  tuck  away .  facts  for  days !   not  just  about  mantises ,  either ,   although  they  are  objectively  one  of  the  coolest  insects  in  north  america .   i’m  a  high  school  science  teacher !   i  mostly  teach  AP  chemistry ,    but  i  also  have  an  anatomy  and  physiology  course  that  i  teach  to  seniors .  i’ve  also  taught  a  few  other  science  subjects  when  we  were  understaffed .   basic  stuff ,   physics ,   biology ,    you  know .  ’    she  has  a  rather  unique  background  compared  to  most  of  the  staff  at  the  high  school :    sally  is  massively ,    massively  overqualified  for  her  position .    but  it’s  become  home  to  her !    she  wouldn’t  trade  it  for  anything  ----  except  her  husband  back .    ‘  what  about  you ?  what  do  you  do  for  work ?  ’   and  it’s  at  this  point  she  realizes  she  hasn’t  actually  introduced  herself  through  all  her  babbling .   ‘  oh ,   i’m  dr  araceli  calypso ,   by  the  way !   but  just  call  me  sally .    what  was  your  name ?  ’

Tony tugged on the strands of hair that brushed against his chin. He was due for a haircut and an updated dye job. The pink he’d added in the beginning of the summer had since faded out, the time spent in the ocean leeching the color until there wasn’t even a pale hint of it’s former vibrant glory. If his father saw him now, he knew Edgar would roll his eyes. The man seemed to appreciate his son’s self expression, but made it clear that he believed Tony lacked any sense of professionalism. “So,” he began, turning to the person beside him, “I obviously need to do something about this.” He tugged on the strands again for emphasis. “But I don’t know what. Got any suggestions?”

           who  is  he  talking  to ?    her ?    she  glances  around  real  quick  to  confirm .   sally  is  not  exactly  the  most  fashion -    or  trend -  forward  person  in  any  room ,   so  she  may  not  be  an  ideal  poll  candidate  for  this .    but  she  does  love  to  talk ,    so  she’ll  do  just  that !   ‘  apparently  mullets  are  making  a  comeback .   isn’t  that  wild ?    the  world  spent  so  much  time  hating  on  them  and  then  gen  z  just  decides  they’re  cool  again .    most  of  my  male  students  have  one ,   or  they  have ,   um ....   fades .   fades ?   i  think  that’s  what  they’re  called .   where  it’s  short  near  the  nape  of  the  neck  but  but  gradually  gets  longer  up  top ?   that .  if  you  can  do  fun  colors ,    you  should  totally  do  purple !   although  --  i’m  biased .   it’s  my  favorite  color .   but  it  would  look  so  nice  on  you !  '

             ‘  something’s  been  bothering  me  all  day .  ’    sally  leans  forward  in  her  chair ,    urging  the  other  to  give  her  their  full  attention .   ‘  i  need  to  ask  you  something .   and  you  have  to  tell  me  the  truth ,   okay ?    i  need  absolute  honesty .  ’   a  moment  passes  as  she  waits  for  reassurance .    ‘  today ,   one  of  my  students  said  that  i  look  like  i  play  candy  crush .   and  that’s  not  even  the  bad  part .   the  bad  part  is  that  all  of  them  laughed  and  agreed !   what  does  that  even  mean ?    they  didn’t  seem  mean  spirited ,    but  i  just  don’t  get  it .  ’

                it’s  always  nice  to  see  old  friends .    at  least ,    that’s  what  sally’s  been  repeating  to  herself  all  day .     as  she  sits  at  one  of  the  tables  outside  of  blackberry  bakery ,    she  tries  to  ignore  the  old  memories  dredging  up .     if  she  can  let  just  herself  relax  for  a  minute ,     talking  to  shane  may  allow  her  feel  like  a  bit  like  her  old  self  again :     the  araceli  she  was  back  in  new  york .    a  happy  newlywed ,    confident  and  ambitious  as  her  forensics  career  began  to  flourish .    unhaunted .    she  pushes  the  thoughts  away  when  she  spots  shane  approaching ,    instead  offering  a  bright  smile  and  a  wave .   ‘  shane ,    it’s  great  to  see  you !  ’   she  gives  him  a  quick  hug  in  greeting  before  she  rambles  on ,   ‘  i  was  so  surprised  to  hear  you’ve  come  to  moorbrooke !    i’m  sorry  i  didn’t  make  plans  with  you  sooner ,    things  at  work  are  just  wild  during  august  and  september !     back  to  school  and  all .    no  matter  that !    how  are  you  doing ,    are  you  loving  it  here ?  ’
