ONE THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED TWENTY-TWO DAYS. but honestly, who’s keeping count ?
the psychology major had finished with his bachelor’s degree last term. now, he was back on campus to get his master’s degree. unless you want to work for the state, there was nothing you could do with a bachelor’s in psychology. he didn’t mind the school, he just went through the motions everyday. this had been typical since his senior year of high school. the day that completely destroyed him.
you would think that after four years, the pain would have dissipated. that he wouldn’t still be caught up on her. he had gotten better, but the person he was before... he was lost for good. he made a slight effort to have friends & to be active. he just didn’t take pleasure in it as much as he used to. they were all a means to the inevitable end. he could be called pathetic. it would not be something he would find unbelievable.
he still managed to get up every morning to go to class. this morning was no different. except he started seeing things. he saw her just a few yards in front of him, directly in his future path. his mind would be so cruel. he blinked hard, willing her to go away. no, no, no. the word repeated in his head. when brown hues focused on the spot where she had been, he saw that she had not gone away.
it was when someone actually spoke to her in passing that he realized she was not just an incarnation of his mind. she was real. standing there. after all these years. his shoulders went limp, the strap of the messenger bag slipping further down until the entire thing of book filled fabric went crashing to the concrete below his feet.
“ fuck. ” he whispered, not able to tear his eyes away from lola.
