Merlin was silent a long time, but then nodded. “I think so too.”

Arthur tightened his grip around Merlin’s waist. “We’ll do it differently next time.”

“Yes, sire, we will,” Merlin said, the words sounding like an oath burned into the heart of the world itself.

Arthur stared at Merlin’s profile in wonder, almost able to feel the power of the words reaching deep into the earth, before stretching out into the unknown future ahead.
