Morning Meetings

The term ‘Morning Meeting’ stems from part of something called Responsive Classroom. Morning meetings consist of four different components, all of which are equally important. They are:

1. Greeting: teacher and students greet each other in different ways. It could be anywhere from a ‘hello’ in another language, a funky wave or a “good morning, ____.” 2. Sharing: The teacher can choose a topic and students will share. For example, on a Monday, you can ask students something fun they did over the weekend. Or- on a Friday, you can ask what students weekend plans are. 3. Activity: The students will complete an activity or game, working collaboratively with their peers using socialization and thinking skills.  4. Message: The students are then directed to a morning message written by their teacher. The message typically entails what is in store for the day.

Morning meetings are a good incorporation into classrooms to create a warm, welcoming tone and environment. When students feel welcomed and a sense of belonging, they feel important and like they belong. Lastly, morning meetings also promote student growth because it encourages collaboration, socialization and thinking skills.

Morning Greetings: Social Distancing Style.

Morning greetings are a positive way to start the day with your students. It is an uplifting way to begin the morning and encourages students (or yourself) having a rough morning start, that there are positive vibes ahead.

Greetings often give students the sense of a new start in the classroom for the day. If students are feeling down, it’s the teachers responsibility to spread some cheer into their life. Implementing small, meaningful gestures like this help teacher-student relationships grow strong. 

Greetings are done in the very beginning of the morning and typically outside of the classroom door. Pre-COVID 19, greetings consisted of high fives, hugs, handshakes, fist bumps and many more. However, due to the current state of the world, greetings that involve contact are OFF limits! Safety first! 

Although greetings that involve physical contact are off limits, there are MANY other greetings teachers can implement to keep the morning positivity train going. Instead of high fives, teachers can do air fives or jazz hands. Instead of fist bumps, they can do air bumps, foot bumps or elbow bumps. Instead of handshakes, they can do a mini dance. Teachers can also do: tip your hat, say hello, namaste, air hug, wave and much more. 

While implementing the non-contact greetings with your students, make sure to remind them why social distancing is important and how it keeps us safe! Also remember to remind them to: wash their hands thoroughly for 20 seconds and frequently, if you have to sneeze, sneeze into your elbow and if you don’t feel well- let us know, ASAP!
